You may have a good point there.  Due to training my archers on wildlife, I do better leaving them with light armor, but a big ambush or siege of elite bow goblins could make me regret that decision.  Typically I do have my melee dwarves between their archers and mine, but that's not total protection.

Is a screw pump gym more worthwhile than letting them just train/spar?
It's and/and, not or/or. Sparring increases combat skills, a pump gym increases civilian skills.
...
Well, it is or, they can't do both at once.  Any time spent in the pump gym is not spent training military skill.  And I recommended mining due to quick skill improvement, just to prevent peasant status, as well as minor strength gains.  But that's before I even draft them.  Once drafted, they are 24/7 military

Yup.  Endurance.  Ya never know who is going to be first on the scene.  Ya want that soldier to have enough zip to last the entire fight.  Had one guy show up, in this fortress, with his adamantine helm, and steal breastplate, copper and iron elsewhere on him.  Against 5-6 nasty trolls.  He went toe to toe, by himself with them all.  Lost both legs, both eyes, ability to grip lost almost everything.  But he didn't bleed out.

Now after a lengthy hospital visit, he's 3000+ Strength, Agility and Toughness.  All because he could withstand the wounds.  Yup, that's why I luv Endurance.

Why I luv stitching and patching with metal thread and cloth, is its a nice surprise, when a soldier dies.  To find it lying there.  Dunno if it improves his defenses, having metal stitches.  Kinda makes me think I have a squad of X-men Wolverines.  I do that simply because its fun, to do it.  Once I get 10-20 helms and 10-20 good weapons, at that point, I just don't use much adamantine.  Playstyle choice, ignore this if ya use more uber metals.

The human trader, from Trade guild, can be turned on in DFhack, he will allow you to specify what armor he brings.. Masks, cover the face.  Only part I believe the dwarf cannot cover with his own crafted armor.  If Wiki is right.  We can also trade for silver whips, if ya want dwarflashers, instead of speardwarfs.  This will easily improve the military damage output without using adamantine.  Sincerely, Knutor
