A thrall from an unremarkable peasant dwarf is a good match for the average clown.
An axelord who is heavily armoured and very muscular gets a further buff to all stats, putting him into the realms of near impossibility.

Not to mention, there is that theory that the more kills a creature gets, the stronger it becomes (not from skill use, but from +1 notables).

Finally, it was trapavoid because it knew your fort as a dwarf, so it ignores traps, as normal dwarves do.
be carefull, it may actually still be part of the civ, and actually killing it with dwarves may cause a loyalty cascade.

i am not sure how it works with dwarves, but a tame cat husk was aggro (even killed the first militia commander i assigned) yet attacking it marked a dwarf as an enemy of the civ.

i currently have 4 "enemy" dwarves slowly starving on the surface.

They certainly do. Someone pitted thralls against clowns; they're roughly evenly matched.

I've done extensive thrall science. To kill them, you must separate their upper and lower body. I've seen them decapitated and then bisected and die, but never just decapitated. Edged weapon traps will decimate thralls. Cage traps will capture them, so long as they are not thralled units that have already had line of sight to your traps. They will fight clowns and they will win.

Can anyone verify if killing an enthralled civ-member causes a loyalty cascade? If it did, that would be utterly game-breaking (well, even more so anyway)

I can confirm killing a husk doesn't initiate loyalty cascades.

Husks and thralls gain [OPPOSED_TO_LIFE] which works as berzerk status.  You can kill a berzerk dwarf without a loyalty cascade.  You may kill a thrall as well.

It sounds like you actually got quite lucky. At least it isn't an INFECTIOUS immortal killing machine. If it was, you'd have had ten immortal axe lord thralls, 60 nigh-immortal crossbow thralls and 173 insanely hard to kill normal dwarf thralls to kill.

In my current game the goblins managed to kill off some of the weaker thralls, but the dwarf ones have slaughtered the besiegers

tell that to the fifteen dead from this loyalty cascade caused by a cat.

cat got husked, started attacking dwarves...  killed the dwarf i threw into the militia to fight it.  second one managed to kill it, but was marked enemy of the civ.  he interrupted all sorts of jobs but was not aggressive unless activated in the military.

eventually hunters saw him and started shooting.  my fortress must be like a big game preserve or something, because about half my immigrants come as hunters.  each hunter that hit the former militia captain were marked as enemies of the civ.

it took half a year, but all rogue elements of the fortress are dead.  and yes, the death toll was 15 or so.

in addition, my evil murk (the huskafying agent in this case) does not seem to be contagious.

I have seen them killed by decapitation. Every time an animal man gets husked, I send out an axedwarf or two - decapitation or bisection is instant death.
