Adamantine crossbows?
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:36:57 am »

Just a quick question.

Are adamamtine crossbows worth using or have I made a really expensive and pointless crossbow when iron would have been better.

As I understand it, in terms of shooting, crossbows work purely on the quality of the bow. A masterwork bone crossbow will be just as powerful as a masterwork adamantine crossbow. The difference in material comes when the crossbows are used to bash enemies at close range, and as you're probably aware adamantine sucks as a material for bashing things.

pointless.  for ranged attacks, only the quality modifier of the crossbow will effect accuracy/damage of the weapon.  For bashing, the crossbow's quality and weight matter, making adamantine useless.  This may be desirable if you want a fortress guard that can kill things without killing citizens when handing out a beating.  A light-weight wood would also work though, and since its cheaper its more reasonable to lock your bowyer in with 50 featherwood logs and have him make crossbows until you get masterwork ones.

Adamantine is even less dense than styrofoam, and for blunt weapons its amazing sharpness doesn't help, so. Imagine your commander trying to bash people to death with a styrofoam crossbow; hilarious, and extra dwarfy if he can succeed. I think you've done the right thing.

Artifact silver crossbow is the best crossbow you can hope for.

Just like the shields.

Does the weight affect rate of fire though through encumberance?

No idea, but as I train my marksdwarves as hammerdwarves as well I generally give them good copper crossbows and basta.

You could always mod them with bayonets.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

no, because artifacts can be made out of any metal, so silver would be outclassed by gold, platinum, or lead.

Oddly enough, I had a Dwarf caravan bring a silver crossbow for sale. H4x!
