Blood barrels.

Would Vampires be able to drink the blood barrels that you can buy for the dwarfs? Or does it have to be fresh blood?

I tried this. It didn't work. I think it has to be from someone or something living. In fortress mode I don't think they will drink from animals either, especially since they don't sleep. Next time I find a vampire in my fort I'll wall it in with a live animal though for !!SCIENCE!!

They only drink from live targets.  Tests have shown them to feed off sleeping livestock, in the case of evil mists.

That's great! That just might make vampires manageable as burrowed workers. I wonder if they'd leave the burrow to get dwarf blood if an animal was pastured with them.

so the question is how to mod your cats to sleep for 18 hours every day just like real cats.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Science was performed in both respects.

Blood from barrels does not interest vampires. Clever ways to expose vampires to the contents have no effect.

Vampires will eat sleeping animals. Animals can be made to sleep by rendering them unconcious with a cavein dust guster. (Drop a single floor tile into a 3x3 tile wall made of fortifications, with the center tile left open)

Urist Mcdragon has been found dead: Completely drained of blood!

Has this ever happened to anyone?

Is being knocked unconscious truly the same as sleep?  As I recall, the tests were done with actual sleep, complete with flashing Z, from an evil mist.

do note that vampires already make fine contained workers.  They don't need to feed to survive, they just get unhappy thoughts from being thirsty.  A vampire in a box with a very nice table and chair, maybe a favorite caged animal, will manage work orders or pull levers forever without issue.

They slow down severely without blood.

I've heard they'll feed on non-sleeping people if they are thirsty enough. Can this be replicated with animals?

oh god, mod dragons to be a non-existent sub-caste of dwarves, make them playable in adv mode, make an adv of one, become a vamp, retire.
