Why the hell
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:43:00 am »

So I heard I can designate long, long staircases in this new version - through z-levels. Finally! So I try. The results are... terrifying.

You know what, screw this. I'm waiting for bugfixen.

Wait, what?  This is what sets you off?  This relatively insignificant bug?  It reveals nothing.  I mean, nothing that actually matters.  Now you know where the eerie pits are, big deal!  Unless you also know where the candy plugs are, and also have a way to utilize or avoid the pits, then it really means nothing.

I mean, what could you possibly do with that knowledge?  And wouldn't it be nice if... say... you could go 10 levels back up instead?  You could just, not designate to the very very bottom.

Also, you can remove designations across Z-levels. Say "Oops" to yourself and do it...

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Could someone elaborate what happened there?
Did he just dug the undugable?

If you attempt to designate at the lowest levels, it reveals the eerie pit outlines.  I discovered this when I ordered a stairwell from the ground to the bottom.  Since then, I've begun designating my stairwell from the ground to the bottom +20, because let's be honest, you don't expect them to dig ALL the way down.
