Other Games / Game Bundles Megathread
« on: May 21, 2013, 10:02:13 pm »
Bundles!

I love them! Yes, those crazy sales you all know and love, where you're given the opportunity to pick up a metric shit-ton of games for a ridiculously discounted price. Having one thread per bundle was all well an good when the Humble Bundles were the only ones worth keeping track of. But those were simpler times! In light of the bundles of bundles now available for your game-hoarding pleasure, I propose THE BUNDLE THREAD. Why not bundle these bundles of bundles all in one delicious thread? Pay what you want!

The Big List of Bundles:
The Humble Bundle - Bundle w/Android 6
The Humble Weekly Bundle - Rochard
Indie Royale - Chosen 2 Bundle
The Indie Gala - June Bundle - Creatures and Pirates
Bundle Stars - Atomic Indie Jam!
The Bitcoin Bundle!
Bundle In A Box - No Bundle
The Free Bundle!

Did I miss any noteworthy bundles? Let me know and I'll at them to the list! I'll also try to keep this list up to date with currently active bundles.

...It just seems that, rather than just posting a new thread every time there's a new humble bundle and largely ignoring the rest, it would be useful to have a thread dedicated to currently active bundles - for when new ones drop, when you want to know what's worth getting, or when you have extra keys to give away. Or if you want to discuss the social and ethical ramifications of bundle culture or something, that too. This is Bay12 after all, who knows what the fuck will come up. Just this week I was alerted to the existence of Bundle Stars and the Be Mine bundles, and the ones currently happening have some pretty damn tempting looking games.

To get the ball rolling: Is it worth shelling out the extra money to get Drakensang and Blades of Time in the Be Mine bundle? I already own bloodbowl and the other 2 $5-limit games don't really interest me.

Life Advice / HELP: Global functions in Adobe Edge
« on: March 24, 2013, 05:19:25 pm »
First of all, my adobe account is having issues accessing the official forums. Also you guys are smart. Hence me posting this here.

Basically, for my final project in a Digital Media class I'm using Adobe Edge to create a simple point and click adventure game. Unfortunately, Edge is a very new program and documentation for more advanced applications in really lacking. I'm got the basic framework of the game mapped out and everything seems to be doable, however I've hit a (rather large) roadblock. I can't seem to create global functions that are recognized properly in my timeline and element events.

My understanding is, if you open the full code you can add your javascript functions to the top you should be able to call them from within your event code. Very simple example, the player is always centered in the screen, movement is achieved by simply hiding all but the appropriate sprite and moving his surroundings around him:

Code: [Select]
function playerWalkR() // hides all player sprites except walk-right animation
{
sym.$("manStandR").hide();
sym.$("manWalkR").show();
sym.$("manStandL").hide();
sym.$("manWalkL").hide();
}

Clearly, this function is so simple that it should obviously do what it's supposed to do. If I add the function directly into the event code it works swimmingly, within that particular event. But the function has to be re-added to every event that uses it. However if I add it to the beginning of the full code I can't call it anywhere, nor can I call functions from one event into another.

Does anybody have ANY experience scripting in Adobe Edge, or enough general Javascript knowledge to pinpoint my error? I'm not all that experienced in Javascript nor am I a natural coder, I know there's got to be some parent-child structure or something Edge uses I'm not addressing, but I can't for the life of me get it to work. One tutorial suggested adding the prefix "Stage_" to any elements your global functions call (as they are all children of the stage element), but that didn't help. It looks like the functions aren't even getting called properly. What do.

Other Games / Need help with games for windows live frustration
« on: December 28, 2012, 09:49:32 pm »
The title says it all. Let me explain my situation as best I understand it.

I recently purchased Batman : Arkham City on Steam. I download and launch it, Steam gives me a validation code and the launcher prompts me to enter it, I do. Game runs fine, a play for 2 hours and quit. The next day I open it again, no savefile. I google around and discover the game only saves if you're connected to Games for Windows Live. OK, fine. I (re?)download games for windows live, open it, sign in, launch Arkham City. It's still not saving. I go to the GFWL website, and it says I have no games, but there is an link to redeem codes. When I try to access this page, it says it is sending a code to an inactive E-mail address to verify because redeeming a game apparently entails "sensitive information". When I got Windows 8 I changed this contact information from the inactive E-mail that I used to register my hotmail account years ago to sending a text to my phone. My Windows Live account info says this information will be updated January 25th.

So my question is, is there any way to play the game I purchased before January 25th? Thanks. Microsoft gives me a headache.

Life Advice / Inexpensive/Free PC video editor with slow/fast motion?
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:05:30 am »
Basically, what the title says. I can't find one. I need to load an AVI, split it into clips, and slow down or speed up certain clips.

Everything else I need I can do with Virtualdub, but I can't speed up or slow down certain parts of a video without desynching the audio - and even then it's a needlessly difficult endeavor. The only free software I've been able to find with this function is, surprise surprise, iMovie. I don't have a Mac. It seems like a pretty damn fundamental thing, and there's a ton of free video editors available. You'd think one of them could do it. I'm even willing to pay CASH MONEY for this functionality, if it's reasonably priced. I don't need Final Cut Pro or anything, I really just need a program that can do this one thing.

Anybody know? I'd appreciate it.

Other Games / Let's just discuss awesome JRPGs now
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:20:20 pm »
So, I decided to create one of those recommend me a game threads the kids are doing these days. I would appreciate your help!

I've been nostalgic for the good old days of JRPGs, but I've had trouble finding anything recently to scratch the itch, and replaying games I've beaten (in some cases, more than once) holds very little appeal to me. Any recent JRPGs I've tried have been unplayably bland (FFXIII, looking at you). I'd hate to pull the "Back in my day" card but BACK IN MY DAY RPGs didn't need fancy graphics and extended cutscenes and full voice-acting and orchestral soundtracks and 3-minute summon-attacks, all we got was some customization and strategy and a decent storyline with likeable characters and that was all we needed, damnit.

Some of my favourites off the top of my head:
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 5/6
Front Mission 1/3
The World Ends with You
Tales of Symphonia
Seiken Densetsu 3
Super Mario RPG

Etc. So yeah, I guess looking for more games like that. I've played most of the classics, so I'm not going to list them all. As you can see from my list of favourites, both Action and Tactics RPGs are still on the table.

HARD MODE: Games on the PC, either free or affordable with digital distribution (Steam or other Online Purchase).

B12, go go go!

General Discussion / WTF Japan : Travel Edition
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:35:55 pm »
So, I'm traveling to Japan at the end of may. I'll be there a couple weeks, and most of the trip has already been planned. It's going to be awesome and I don't care that I'm going to be broke by the time I return. HOWEVER, I'm going to be in Tokyo for 3 days and dear god, I'm stumped.  Overwhelmed. There's way more than 3 days worth of crazy stuff to do and see in Tokyo. Crazy Japanese shopping, museums, shrines, parks, clubs, clothes, robots...

So, Bay 12, I need your help. What are the things I absolutely can't miss while I'm in Tokyo?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Telephone Comics : Round 14 soonish
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:15:08 pm »
The idea is simple. One person draws a comic. Someone else writes dialogue for the comic. Another person, without access to the original comic, draws a comic to match the dialogue. The cycle repeats. This game is essentially a reboot of the Telephone Comics thread of ages past, which was essentially a variation on the EPYC forum games of ages even more past. Because they were goddamn hilarious, I'm reviving the idea.

Look at the older telephone comics thread for an idea of how it all works if there's any confusion. Both good and bad art are encouraged, it works best with a healthy mix of both. The comics don't need to be funny on their own, the funny tends to arise organically. The only real additional rule is do not post any spoilers about the current round in the thread, as the whole point is that each participant is going in mostly blind. Ideally, people doing words should make their submissions dialogue only, optionally naming characters, including sound effects, and very minor stage direction. If you want to sign up, specify Art Preferred, Dialogue Preferred, or No Preference so I can do my best to accommodate, and

Please only sign up if you are going to be available to participate.

General Discussion / Strange Ads
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:14:04 pm »
So, I'm somewhat interested in advertising. It's an absolutely enormous industry - despite the fact that most people attempt to consciously ignore, or even claim to be immune to, advertisements. Usually, I like to think I do a good job of blocking out the white noise of constant advertisement in our culture. Sometimes, however, an ad manages to get through to me and and I find myself paying attention. It's not the particularly clever or catchy ones, not the ones that rely on repetition or shock value. It's the ones that are just mindbogglingly strange.

Giant Squirrel + Ground Beef

This message brought to you by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. THANKS FOR THE NIGHTMARES GUYS.

Please share any advertisements that you find particularly nonsensical and/or disturbing. Asian ads do not count, they are all weird.

Giant Squirrel creeps me out man.

As always, I trust you will all be bros and only enter if you actually want the game, rather than just for hey free stuff. Winning a game will render you ineligible for the other draws. Other Games / [CLOSED] Greed Corp giveaway - micelus wins a game!
« on: August 03, 2011, 04:31:49 pm »
Who likes free games? I'd bet quite a few of you do!

Greed Corp is a turn-based strategy game in which you rape the earth for fun and profit, and use cute mechs to crush your opponents. Each match clocks in at around 15 or 20 minutes, and it plays more like a board game than your traditional Civilization-esque strategy games. Incredibly fun little game. I was planning on doing a SteamGifts giveaway, but I've become disenchanted with it lately (HUMBLE BUNDLES EVERYWHAR), so I'm just doing it the old fashioned way.

RULES AND CONDITIONS:
1) Entries will be open for exactly 24 hours after this topic is created.
2) To enter, just post in this topic clearly indicating that you want in.
3) Anybody whose first post on the forum was made after this giveaway was posted is not eligible to enter and will be called hurtful names if they try.
4) I will be using the Random.org List Randomizer to select the winner once the 24 hours is up.
5) Be a bro, if you've won other giveaways on this forum, let someone else have a shot at it.

One article. And another.

So, as many of you are probably completely unaware, the Vancouver Canucks lost a hockey game last night. In a completely unsurprising turn of events, the city went completely apeshit. Brawling, looting, burning police cruisers, the whole shebang. This is not the first time, but was apparently worse. My sister watched the game on one of the big-screens set up downtown, had to walk around burning cop cars and bear-effigies to get home.

Just thought I'd start a topic, since this is pretty close to home for me, and some of the pictures are absolutely priceless. Example:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think that is a mannequin leg covered in blood.

Personally, I find it embarrassing not only that this is all it takes to instigate a riot, but that it's completely unsurprising when it happens. I'm a Canucks fan, sure, I watched the game and it was terrible, but what the hell is the point of rioting? Is it sending a message? Or, more accurately, is it sending one you want to send? Seems like, for most people, it was just an excuse to stir some shit up. Thoughts on sports riots?

I make made a Webcomic. It is was about Pokemon. It is was called Pink Version.

There was a time that I was trying to record all the comics in the OP, but it has proven much easier to just open a SmackJeeves account for it ACCOUNT CLOSED. Comics still appear to work in the thread though.

Initially, I essentially just chose a topic and started drawing, in an attempt to break my cycle of project-procrastination. This lack of forethought is often...quite pronounced, but it is what it is. It's had proven a useful avenue for practice and experimentation, and apparently some people are were enjoying it, so I've kept it up I did it for a while and then stopped.

EDIT: PAST TENSE-IFIED

Forum Games and Roleplaying / You Meet in a Tavern

You meet in a tavern.

This WRETCHED HIVE of SCUM AND VILLAINY is where your MERRY BAND OF AVENTURERS plans their BIG ADVENTURES. Like the time you cleared those GIANT RATS out of old man Sauls cellar, or when you solved the NEFARIOUS THEFT of Grandma Macie's THIMBLEBERRY PIES.

The tavern is mostly empty, the night is young, so the barmaid is quick in bringing your MILK. This meeting has been called to come up with a COOL NAME for your adventuring crew, and share any ADVENTURE HOOKS that may have turned up on THE STREETS.

But before all that, you have to take ROLL CALL.

Creative Projects / Starting a webcomic
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:24:05 pm »
So, my friend and I have recently started working on a web graphic novel. He's doing most of the writing and I'm doing the art. It's sort of an adventure/political intrigue story in a modern-tech fantasy setting. I was looking for some constructive feedback...I'm really pleased with what we've got so far, and we've got some big plans for later on in the story, but I think we've sort of written ourselves into a corner and we're not too sure what to do next. Here's what we have so far:

Any advice?
