Hi Bay12! Do you do fighting? I do fighting. Well, kinda, I train in karate, and have been doing so for a pretty long while. I teach and stuff, though I don't have my own facility or anything crazy.

I've recently found myself kinda curious as to whether anyone else on this forum does martial arts or other various forms of fighting. Boxing, wrestling, sambo, judo, kung fu, silat, inviting-people-to-your-backyard-and-fighting-them-there-fu, anything else that isn't currently popping into my head.

This thread'll be for general discussion about basically anything related to some form of fighting - what you've been working on and might be having difficulty with, if you're seeking tips or advice on what art you might prefer if you're considering starting to train, etc. Just general discussion stuff, really.

Allow me to open with a joke, which may or may not have been the only reason I started this thread to begin with: what is Shrek's favorite judo technique?

Spoiler: Answer (click to show/hide)

So I ran across a webcomic I really, really like recently, and I can't find anywhere that seems to be talking about it, so I'm taking it upon myself to spread the word.

Problem Child is the story of Amber and Sandra Bailey, a daughter and mother living in a fictional town called LeTrompé in Vermont. Sandra is, to put it mildly, not a good parent in the slightest - she's actually crass, abrasive, manipulative, and horribly abusive, as well as being a massive alcoholic. Amber deals with this as best she can, which since she's 14, isn't very well, typically by venting about her problems to anyone who'll listen and writing haikus. The plot is fairly complex and features a whole host of characters, each of which is distinct and well-developed, so I won't give spoilers - thematically speaking it's mostly about dealing with one's problems and shitty behaviour with the help of the people around you, while also helping them with the same thing.

Do be warned, this comic features adult content - while sex/full nudity aren't explicitly shown onscreen (to my recollection), there is more than a little of it happening, as there are characters dating and such. Also a lot of fairly realistic (or at least seriously played) depictions of alcohol abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, etc, if you find that sort of thing disturbing. So, uh, be aware of that, this comic ain't for kids.

So if you like complex narratives focusing on interpersonal development and interaction, dealing with past traumas, and trying to become a better person, then Problem Child may be for you.

Oh, and did I mention it updates every two days, CONSISTENTLY? Because it does.

Oh, and also this thread's inevitably gonna have spoilers for the comic so you should probably make sure to read it before perusing this if you care about that kind of thing

Other Games / The Gamer 's Movement! (Aka advertising for a friend)
« on: March 23, 2015, 02:32:02 am »
A friend of mine (admittedly I haven't talked with him in a while since he's going to university or something somewhere or in a music thing or something equally complicated but still) recently started one of the things where he gives away games on Steam and such.  It's pretty small-time right now, but I figure some spreading of the word won't hurt.

The Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/TheGamerMovement

And he's set up a Patreon here (admittedly there aren't many reward things but it's understandable since it's as far as I know a one person budget right now): https://www.patreon.com/thegamersmovement

I don't necessarily expect anything to come out of this, just thought I'd do him a favor and spread the word a bit.

General Discussion / The Eldritch Horror Thread!
« on: March 02, 2015, 05:21:09 am »
As the most loudmouthed of Bay12's resident unfathomable eldritch beings, it seems obvious that I make this thread. So!
This is a thread about discussing eldritch abominations, for example your ideas or concepts of a dread being that you wanted some feedback on, questions about an existing character, or maybe just talking about an existing setting or something. This includes all of H.P Lovecraft's works, as he did a lot for representing us here. Thanks, Howard.
Standard forum rules apply, don't post any illegal stuff, no tentacle porn please, if an argument gets heated just take a step back from the screen and calm down, then come back and talk; etcetera, we're all relatively decent connoisseurs of madness, so dig in!

DF Gameplay Questions / A question involving DFFD
« on: November 14, 2013, 03:52:30 am »
I have a question for you, Bay12. When uploading a particular world to DFFD, are you supposed to put the world.sav file as the file to be uploaded? I'm unsure of this.

EDIT: It appears that .sav files aren't allowed. Vexing.
How does one upload adventurer saves?

EDITAGAIN: Nerp nevermind found out how.

Other Games / STRIKE LEGION
« on: November 14, 2013, 03:24:11 am »
It's the greatest pen and paper RPG ever. It rips off all the settings, all the weapons, all the things, and mushes them into a gigantic ball of awesome.
As an incentive to read an indepth explanation, a properly-statted PC (this isn't very difficult to do) can swordfight starships.

Now read this.

The rulebook's here for sale, and it's only 3 dollars.
But seriously, it's very much worth it.

So, this nifty game is basically Dwarf Fortress in space. I've only seen a few videos, but there's a working alpha up on Steam and there's some LPs of the game going around. I personally think it looks promising; thoughts?

This thread will be about the webcomic Goblins, which is basically what would happen if a bunch of goblins became the PCs of a D&D campaign. It has - in my opinion - really cool combat, story, characters - it's good, basically. Go read it. It's a bit silly at the start but quickly gets very dark, just to warn you.

Also, warning for the squeamish - BLOOD AND GORE APLENTY RESIDE HERE.
So yeah.

In recent comic news, what the fuck, Minmax. No. Bad.

Oh, and there’s also an animated series being developed by Matt King, a bunch of the Futurama cast, and most notably for me, Phil Lamarr, aka Samurai goddamn Jack! (I’m 99% sure it was him, at least.) It’s a kickstarter right now, but, uh, these guys know how to make things. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1369986283/goblins-animated

Life Advice / X Games: to wait or buy now?
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:38:57 pm »
I've been considering buying an X game (those nifty spacecraft simulators) for a while now and I've recently decided to snag myself a copy of Albion Prelude. But then I hear rumors of a new game called X: Rebirth. I hear you can walk around in your ship! Talk to crew! Visit cities!
But I also hear that you're limited to controlling one ship, can't control capital ships, and a few more things. So my question to you, Bay12, in your professional capacity as the Internet, is: should I just buy Albion Prelude or wait for Rebirth?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / A Rather Specific Warning
« on: August 10, 2013, 04:13:22 pm »
This is to everyone who's forum games, RTDs, and such I'm participating in:
I'll be offline for about three weeks to a month in a day or two due to outside business. I'll not have Internet while doing this business, and thus will not be a very good game player. So if I'm currently participating, just handwave my character as hanging out in some safe location/following the party/etc. If I'm on the waitlist, keep me there until I return.
Sorry to have to do this, but them's the bites or whatever that human saying is. Starting tomorrow, sayonara Bay12.

General Discussion / Speculation/WMG Thread
« on: April 05, 2013, 10:08:35 pm »
Have a theory about what's going to happen in a book? Wondering what the ending of that movie meant? Was that charger really a vampire? This is your thread. Speculate about stuff, wild mass guessing, all that jazz.

As the void spins through infinite possibilities, a myriad of worlds and things can be seen.
Alternate realities. Alternate yous.
It's all down to chance, really. Chance determines all things - what you do, what happens to you, where you are, if you even exist.

Chance has decided to give you a rare privelige, you of unknown origin. It allows you to choose your own road.
Choose.

What is the (initial) setting?
