Other Games / Valheim - Survivaling the norse way!
« on: February 15, 2021, 05:11:33 pm »
Steam page

Kinda surprised this hasn't popped up here yet, considering the amount of noise it's been making around the internet (specifically Steam and Twitch).

What it basically is, is a survival game (like there wasn't an overabundance of those already) set in a procedurally generated world, inspired heavily by the Norse mythos. You're a dead warrior sent by Odin to the exiled world of Valheim to take care of the baddies locked up there before they cause too much trouble. Start out naked, punch trees, get wood, craft tools, hunt animals, build a home, kill bosses, progress, etc etc
It's best described as a 3d Terraria imo, as the progression is heavily tied into exploration and overcoming challenges (for example you only got the basic wood/stone tools and weapons until you kill the first boss, which unlocks proper mining and smelting, which leads to basic metal tools and weapons, etc) while at the same time having a good bit of base building and crafting tied into the whole process. You get massive buffs from resting in a proper place with a roof over your head and a fire burning nearby, as well as buffs from eating food (bigger and longer lasting buffs from better meals). Your gear also needs to be maintained (tho this doesn't require resources, so it only limits how long you can go on without taking a break of sorts) and upgraded from time to time. There's a fairly developed building system that takes into account physics somewhat, so you have to build supports and the like to not have your dwelling collapse on your ass, fairly intuitive in how it communicates this in terms of tinting pieces depending on how sturdy their support is. You can go sailing about since the world is fairly large, dungeon diving as well since there's certain stuff you only get from there.
The combat itself is fairly decent and has some depth, but not without jankiness that most early access/indie games have at release. There's different weapons, blocking/parrying, dodging, all the bells and whistles. Progression in terms of skills is basically do thing to get better at thing, making it more efficient or damaging or what have you. Your hp/stamina is fixed however and the only way to increase it is by eating/resting, basic food gives small buffs, cooked and more complex meals give long lasting and large increases, further encouraging having a proper base of operations so you can get buffed enough to handle some of the nastier enemies.
Death is temporary, you drop all your  shit and lose a certain amount of skill levels (but then get temporary immunity to further loss), plus getting your stuff back gives you a corpse run buff which is nice from getting away from whatever kicked your ass in the first place. Another similarity to Terraria is how characters are handled, you make your guy/gal and then you can generate a seed based world for them. Any gear you have on you you can take to other worlds, and since most shit doesn't respawn, making multiple worlds to farm certain things seems to be a viable tactic.
Also there's coop, makes shit harder, but from the looks of it, having multiple people does help quite a bit.

Anyways, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head to say. Played several hours, it was fairly enjoyable, the graphics are a bit dated but what it lacks in fidelity it more than makes up for in atmosphere (weathering a rainstorm is fucking cool). It's fairly cheap right now too at some 20$ or your equivalent, especially once you realize how much stuff is in there already and that this is just their first EA version, with more shit to come down the road.

So yeah, Valheim, anyone else hooked on it?

Creative Projects / Modelling (of the scale variety) thread!
« on: November 29, 2019, 07:07:00 am »
Right, been meaning to do this for a while now since I've been kinda dipping my toes into the scale stuff with gundam kits for the past year or so and finally decided to divebomb the deep end with a tank kit I ordered today (because hey, 30% off is a pretty good deal for something you were gonna get eventually anyways). I also have a plane kit on the way but that thing is running way late and I have no idea if it'll even arrive tbh.

Anyways, that stuff out of the way, this is hopefully gonna be a thread for sharing shit you make, be it wargaming minis, scale models of whatever or scratchbuilt stuff even. Generally, anything you put together using your hands I guess. Sharing tips and advice would also be welcome since those are always good (and nobody likes fucking up an expensive kit just because they had no idea a specific thing is best done a specific way).

As far as my own collection goes, it's at three gundams atm, one no-grade 1/100 Barbatos Lupus and two 1/144 RG kits (Zephyrantes and 00 Raiser), don't have time to get some pics up atm since I'm leaving for work soon but I'll try and get something by the end of the weekend. And I gotta say, the way Bandai does these is amazing, the amount of engineering and gimmickry in the RG line is mindblowing. It does lead to some wonky parts at times and you gotta be careful when handling some of them but the detail and articulation is pretty damn great for something so small. I'm definitely looking forward to getting more of them because putting these together is such a fun and relaxing experience.

So, what about the rest of you fine folk, any particular part of this hobby that you enjoy or would like to enjoy?

Announcement trailer

So that's a thing, not much has been announced other than the fact that it's happening. If the trailer is anything to go by, there might be more of a base building focus this time, or atleast, it'll be there from the start and not modded in after the fact.

So yeah, not particularly hyped, more of a wait and see, since the first one is still fun every now and then, curious to see where they'll take it.

Killer trailer tho.

Edit:
Dev post containing additional info

tl;dr
Still Unity, coming to all storefronts, focus on making modding accessible, more advanced tech, expanded colonization, interstellar travel.

Creative Projects / Jopax does stuff (again)
« on: December 11, 2018, 07:59:39 pm »
Righto, due to some recent conversations and thinking I've been doing I figured it was time to kick this whole art thing into a higher gear. Part of that kicking would be having a more consistent output, as well as pushing my comfort zone as well as skills further out.

With that in mind, here's this thread thing (I know there's atleast one more of mine but that's rather ancient at this point and I don't feel like dredging it up from the depths), mostly to keep me beholden to some sort of loose posting schedule (wether it be studies, practice or finished pieces) as an added layer against sliding back into laziness. Of course, comments, critiques and requests are more than welcome.

To start it off, here's some recent sketches and similar, with more to come on a daily basis I guess.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The next couple of months will probably be focused on perspective excercises and some minor series of works (starting with just doing a bunch of aircraft of various sorts) and afterwards I'll see what'll come next.

Other Games / Foxhole - Running with rifles but with crafting
« on: February 10, 2017, 02:32:35 pm »
So I just came upon this thing, Phly did a kind of intro video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xpWQVtGHKI

What is it? Well it's like the title says, isometric shooter on a massive-ish scale but with a twist, every piece of equipment is made by the players from materials they collected. This means that holding territory is important to get resources as well as access to crafting points (it seems they're limited to certain spots on the map) and not only that, logistics are an actual thing because you need to transport said arms and ammo to wherever the fighting is happening at the time.

It's F2P (for now atleast, no idea what their monetisation plan is) and on Steam in pre-early access (whatever that means) here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/505460/

I haven't checked it out myself yet but it seems interesting enough with a cool idea but I'm fairly certain teaming up would be pretty fun, especially with division of duties in a somewhat organised way.

Any takers?

Other Games / Hyper Light Drifter
« on: April 01, 2016, 06:50:47 am »
So I searched for a thread on this and it appears I made one when the game was on KS three years ago.

So let's not necro that and instead start fresh.

What is it?

Well it's a pixelart top down exploration RPG in the style of Zelda. Now, while I'm slightly sick and tired of all the pixealrt games that have come out in the past few years (the style has seriously been worked to death imho) I'm giving this one a pass because it's so god damn well done and beautiful that I'm having trouble being annoyed at it.

Oh yeah, there's a release trailer too.

I haven't played it just yet, but I should within the next couple of days, so expect a writeup of sorts.

Creative Projects / Daily Draw
« on: March 10, 2016, 06:46:47 pm »
So, in an effort to get myself to do digital artwork on a more regular and structured basis I'm starting this thing. It's there to help me keep myself a bit more accountable and to also keep track of my progress (and to some extend leech off some of the potential praise and turn in into motivation if the going gets rough).
Now, not all works will be highly polished but they will be presentable to some degree atleast. No overaching theme is planned for now, but something might come up as we go. Any of you are free to join me if you so desire, and are in fact encouraged to do so. If not, well, feel free to watch then ^^
Anyways, here goes day one:

Life Advice / Dealing with compulsive/addictive behaviour
« on: February 13, 2016, 01:22:54 pm »
So I've got this problem you see, I'm not sure when it started but I also don't remember a time where I wasn't like this. That is, lacking mostly any sort of self control when it comes to almost anything. So there's rarely if ever any middle ground in almost anything I do, I'll either eat the whole damn chocolate or not have any of it (because I know I'd eat the whole damn thing if given the chance).
And this is despite attempts in recent times to get this shit under control, I'll decide upon a thing (like say, eat only a bit of chocolate) but by the time the decision to follow up on what I set out comes I just kinda roll over it without giving any regard to what I decided earliel.
Now, for the most part I always brushed this issue aside, but in the last year or so, certain things happened that kinda brought it right into my face where it's impossible to ignore it as one of the key sources of most of my problems. (and funnily enough, a certain episode of South Park kinda made me start thinking about it real hard) Now, I've tried bringing this stuff under control somehow, but my approach so far of just brute forcing myself into compliance was met with mixed results. Certain things have improved but for the most part, it's still the same.
So I'm at wits end here, and I don't think I have any other option but to finally ask someone, anyone, for help. Do you people have any expirience with this, any advice on what I could be doing to try and fix this part of myself that's brought me stupid amounts of both pain and trouble.

Other Games / Punch Club *SMACK*
« on: January 17, 2016, 02:18:52 pm »
So, no thread for this, but it's pretty good so here's a thread.

What is Punch Club?

Well it's a retro styled pixel art fighting managment game. Now that might sound weird and it is, but it kinda works.

You're following a random dude with a classic 80's hero backstory which is kinda quickly thrown in your face with the first cutscene and then as it develops(in a rather neat quest tree kind of way that makes everything easy to track) it grabs every trope from that period, as many references as it can take and runs into crazy land. Which is pretty awesome if you appreciate these kinds of movies, I kinda like them so it's pretty good in that department.
Now, the gameplay itself is divided into two main areas, the training and the fighting. Training comes down to buffing up three of your main stats, working, sleeping and running errands so you can feed yourself and train some more before your next fight comes up. Fighting is hands off for the most part, you pick your moves (which there's a ton of) and then watch the show, it's fought in rounds so you can adjust your strategy after every round. It's decently deep as far as the interactions go, your three main stats affect the damage, accuracy and costs of moves, you have stamina which is used for all moves, if you run out you're in a bad place. Each of the main stats also has a corresponding school of combat which you need to specialise for and it's generally more adviseable than trying to be good at everything. It goes from classic strenght based boxing, agility based karate and ninja stuff and stamina based, wrestling I guess, haven't looked into that too much, but basically you turn into a tank which hits rarely, but hits hard.

In any case, some gameplay if you're into lets plays and that sort of thing.

Other Games / Downwell
« on: October 19, 2015, 03:37:53 am »
So, a random Jim Sterling video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6q4eZc22sA

As it turns out, ten minutes of gameplay is enough to get me to buy this 3 euro gold nugget.

Now, for those either too lazy or unable to watch that video, downwell is a rougelite platformer in which you jump down this wierd well and try to get as far as possible using your gunboots and anything else you might find along the way. Different enemies, different powerups, shops, progression even in death (that's the rougelite bit methinks) and a neat retro style that goes all the way and is both simple and easy to read at a glance once you learn which enemy is which.

I also found it great because single runs are really short (atleast until I get better, hopefully) so you can have a couple of rounds in ten minutes and be on your way well satisfied by what you accomplished. Also it's really easy to pick up with only like three buttons to use but there's a lot to getting the timing right and comboing stuff and deciding which weapons work best for you and it's really fun and dirt cheap so you should totally go play it.

Oh yeah, steam store linky: http://store.steampowered.com/app/360740/

Other Games / Armored Warfare-Totally not WoT
« on: October 12, 2015, 04:49:02 pm »
So I thought we had a thread for this already, but it appears not. So now we do.

Obligatory link: http://aw.my.com

What's AW? Well it's basically a clone of World of Tanks but with tanks going from early 60-ies to five minutes into the future with some of the top tier tanks still being prototypes like the Armate or the PL-01
So what's the point of it other than shiny new tanks?
Well the devs took note of what WoT was doing right and copied that, they also took note of what could be improved and improved that.
Main selling points:
-Lowered the RNG, here it's 10% IIRC
-No oneshots other than ammoracks, a big one, pretty much no tank can oneshot another one unless there's like a five tier difference, and even then it takes a lot of luck
-Arty isn't gamebreakingly retarded, here, instead of playing with the RNG arty is fast firing and accurate, but deals relatively low damage per shot. This means you're more of a support role for critting and flushing out tanks out of cover, also support shells for spotting or providing smoke cover. There's also a neat little game within a game of cat and mouse with the enemy arty because every time you fire you get revealed and there's a ping one the map of your general location. Stand still too long and you get counterbatteried.
-Tank roles are neatly defined and each offers varied gameplay, the MBT's are your heavies with big guns and lots of frontal armour but low mobility and weak sides and rear, AFV's are the scouts which can mark targets for extra damage, usually have autocannons for flanking or ATGM's, Arty is arty, TD's are quick and pack a punch but can't take one and light tanks are usually fast with good guns but no armour
-PvE missions where you stomp bots of varying difficulty, quite a refreshing thing when you get tired of PvP, also a great way to make sure none of your tanks face players stock
-No crappy gold ammo, only ammo of varying effectiveness which you unlock by playing the tank. Also loads of different kinds of ammo, each working in a different way. From AP which comes in several flavours and is good for armoured targets but tends to overpenetrate thin armour and do little, to HEAT which is good if it pens, countered by composite, ERA and cage armour tho, HE and HESH/HEP which do damage wherever they hit but deal massive damage if you heat a weakspot like the engine deck, also critting modules everywhere. Also ATGM's of various HE and HEAT flavours which you guide to your target and which deal massive damage, but can be dodged or shot down by APS
-All the tanks you want, as in, no garage slots needed, if you can afford a tank you can own it, about the only thing they charge for is skill resets, xp conversion, premium time and premium tanks
-There's a base thing which you build and which gives bonuses, still in development so there's not much to do atm
Then there's stuff which is different to WoT but not neccessarily better or worse, like a completely different crew system, where each tanks crew sticks to the tank and has several skills and perks which you can pick, but you also have commanders which you unlock or buy which can be moved from tank to tank, they have different specialities and perks which help with them, from guys specialised for MBT's and tanking damage, to gals who work best in zippy scout tanks or bastards whose main desire is to get as much crits and fires started (my favourite so far tbh).
So jump in I guess, the grind isn't too terrible for the first five tiers (out of the eight so far in the game), mostly because no tank is shit out of the box and no tank is there to just make you waste money on skipping it. They're all pretty fun once you get the hang of them, even arty (tho there's a lot of those around so waiting times are long, ingame they're not that bad since they're capped to 2 per team).

I think that wall of text summed it up nicely, so join me, I'm Djoze on EU.

Play With Your Buddies / Warzone 2100 get togethers
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:21:57 am »
Could've sworn we had something like this before (or was that in the game thread itself?).

Anyways, this is the game's unofficial page: http://wz2100.net/

Kept alive by fans and updated from time to time. Awesome game, you probably played it ages ago, or like me, still do from time to time.

We had a B12 game or two in the past, and I'd like to throw another one of these this summer. We'd see how many people we have and their available times and whatnot and hopefully play some fun games of this.

Any takers?

Creative Projects / Art learning thread: The lesson strikes back
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:54:41 pm »
*thread title subject to change*

So, here it is, no coming back from this now :C

Ok, time to bring this back to life. We'll do it differently this time though. This time around, this will be my personal improvement and learning thread where I'll be posting daily exercises and stuff I work on to improve. You guys are free to tag along if you'd like and even ask for help and all that stuff and I'll do my best to answer in a helpful manner.

Furthermore, mostly because it's burned a hole in my inbox, I'll be hosting the giveaway for the Ctrl+Paint tutorial this Sunday. Since I don't think the old list of participants isn't valid anymore I'll have a signup last 'till Saturday evening (we'll go by UTC becuse why the hell not) and then we'll hold the raffle Sunday morning. The usual forum giveaway rules apply, no escaped lunatics and people registered after today. Also it'd be real nice if the winner used the tutorial and shared the progress here :D

The list of entrants (entirees?) as it is:

Link to the KS page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661802484/hyper-light-drifter

Because I'm still groggy from sleep I'll be short, it's a bigger, more adventure and exploration oriented pixel styled version of Bastion, and it looks god damn gorgeous, and the music is pretty sweet too.

They've been at it for two days and have already beaten their funding mark by almost five times, so, check it out atleast, you won't regret it :D
