Other Games / Re: Star Control 2 sequel: Children of Infinity

Yes indeed. I first played the game without voices, when it came out.

It's the final day of the kickstarter. Ironically it comes down to the question if the voice- over stretchgoal can be reached :o. The first game was fine with just text, but a lot of people want voices.

Edit: they made the voice-over goal in like, the last hour 🙂

Only a few days left in the kickstarter. Looks like they won't make the voice-over stretch goal, but all the other important ones have been reached.

I got into Ur-Quan Masters pretty late, and never finished it. Now I have to get back to it.

For those that want to play the old game (originally released as Star Control 2), it's good to know that there are a lot of different versions of the Ur-quan masters released by different parties. All of these are the same game with some important differences, explained below.

Star control 1 and 2: Sold by Stardock on steam, currently for 3.99.
Free stars: The Ur-Quan masters, freely downloadable from steam by pistol shrimp games, who are now making children of infinity.
The Ur-Quan masters HD megamod; Despite what the name implies, this is the full game, with optional fan made improvements. Also free.

For the best gameplay experience you are probably best off downloading the megamod as it supports optional HD graphics, and quality of life improvements, but downloading the Free stars version is also nice to give the original authors some recognition.  Despite being sold for actual money, the Stardock version is the worst, as it lacks voice-overs, and is the most basic version of all three.

Also note that the game does not keep a quest log or notes! You have to write down hints yourself on actual paper, this game is from the nineties when this was normal. There is time to fool around while exploring, but be aware that if you don't get your act together in the game at some point, really bad things will start to happen after a certain amount of time has passed. That said it is probably one of the best games ever, so don't let the above scare you.

Sorry guys, I was on vacation the last two weeks, and did not check the forums. The next one can pick up the save. I'll update the turn list

Yes that annoyed me too, probably has something to do with them only charging you when the kickstarter reaches its goal, or is final. That might be hard to set up with different payment methods.

I don't know how many of you remember Star Control 2, the Ur-Quan masters from the nineties?
It was a space-rpg with arcade like combat and a high dose of humor. For me it probably even ranks above DF in the list of best games ever.
It looks like it is finally getting a sequel by it's original creators. The new game will be called Free Stars: Children of Infinity.

It looks like it will stay very close to the original, with a retro feel, and the same arcade combat and humor.

They currently have a kickstarter going, which is already fully funded, but there are always stretch goals that would be very nice to have, so they can certainly use more support. The kickstarter page can be found here :
Kickstarter Children of Infinity
The kickstarter is currently probably the best source of information on the game, but they also have a website here:

I hear some of you think "but have there not been other sequels"
Yes, that is true, there have been, but they were not made by the original people and have received very mixed reviews

Star control 3 was made by Accolade after Toys for Bob lost the rights to the series. It is generally considered to be a dissapointment by fans, and the new game will likely act as if this whole thing never happened.

More recently Star Control Origins was made by Stardock. This is a very decent and fun game in my opinion, but takes place in a different universe with none of the original aliens and storylines.

Stardock does have the IP rights for the Star Control name, but not to the original content that Toys for Bob created. For the new game this is the other way around, the creators of the original game can and will use the old content and storylines, but can't use the Star Control name.

Black holes can't explode. Nothing can escape from them.

Not counting cheating by Hawking radiation.

The community sections of steam seem to be down, not just the B12 one either. It might be related.
Edit: Oops you mean the bay12 site. I'm not sure what was there

Good to know you'll still be around. I kind of had the same issue with the game over the last few months. Mostly because the current DF version has no adventure mode and I am an adventure mode player.
But now that the adventure mode release is days away, excitement is slowly building back up.

Anyhow, just want to let you know that all the work you've done on the wiki is greatly appreciated.

As for museum IV, Once the new version is out, I'll start experimenting with generating new worlds, we probably should wait a few bugfix releases before jumping in.

I've tried to update the maps, and other stuff. There have been quite some developments, and I did not really keep up with events over the last weeks.
We are now in the fourth age of heroes, and the fifth century of active play in this world, which is crazy.

Here is the new map, there are actually multiple Traps of Dying, I guess one of them must be a trap, and not the real thing  :):

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's turned into a cartographers nighmare by now, and I hope anyone is actually able to find something in this maze :-)
The photoshop file that I use to track things has turned into a nightmarish file with 238 layers, all with confusing names.
I should really organise this better for the next museum game. Speaking of which, it won't be long to the adventure mode release. Can't wait.

Happy to be back!

I've send Maloy a PM that the forums are online.

All this talk about engame shenanigans remind me of museum I, where somehow through the game mechanics all the past adventurers ended up squating the same house, and they started fighting as soon as anyone got near. At some point it did turn into a massive fight were all of them ended up tearing eachother to bits. It was not really an end-fight, more something that happened half-way the museum game, but epic nonetheless. It could be fun to see all the current characters have a go at eachother, controlled by AI.

As for this suggestion, and the previous ones. I'm not qualified enough with DFhack to get any of those organised, but I have my popcorn ready in case someone does.

I agree with that. Also you could use the time to do some fort building?

It is indeed, Congrats!

That was from the original museum when Kesperan got twice husked. Did anyone at all get husked in the current game? It seems it is a rare syndrome in our current world, but it happened all the time in the first museum game.
I think the area around Homesafe the shrine of guarding is cursed like that, but I know of no other regions? We do of course have all the contagious undead syndromes to compensate for the lack of husking clouds.

I haven't really read the adventures yet, but I see there is great confusion about Zar Evenchirped, one of the companions of my gremlin adventurer.
I suspect we are dealing with an army of clones controlled by a certain character with a honey-addiction and a preference for outlandish architecture.

Zar Evenchirped was left behing in Honeyhammer when my gremlin died, and that left him at the mercy of whatever darkness dwells in that place.
I strongly suspect this is no coincidence, as it was hinted at at the time that bad things might happen to him.

All is well, I got a bit distracted with other hobbies over the last month :)

Anyhow, The turn list has been updated, but I have not read all the latest stories yet. I'll try to catch up.
