DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / what stories do your dwarves tell?

One of mine told a story about the god of war and fortresses aiding a sheep demon named Tharumi Slaveinsects the Wickedness of Monkeys to its rise to power, in order to test the strength of great fortresses.

I can't tell if I'm more entertained by the idea of a sheep demon or the demon's name.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bugs, or me being a fool?

Okay, to start, non of the usual pitfalls are present, meaning dwarves can path to the bins, the items are just sitting in stockpiles, they have nothing blocking them, they aren't in use by another dwarf, no nobles are making mandates, no burrows, nothing is forbidden, etc.

When I trade, my usual trade goods especially crafts and gems aren't all showing up. I don't know why. Also, I have tons and tons of seeds usable for planting outside, under that elf-cursed sky. The game tells me I have no seeds for that location.

I don't get it. Did traders suddenly get pickier about crafts and uncut gems? what's with the seeds? is it just a bug? I'm still using 44.05 if that matters

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I display case?

Hey guys, maybe you can help me out.

I had dorf traders bring me a display case, which was very cool, except that I stupidly passed it up thinking, "Oh, I'll just make one, no big deal."  When i go to make one, though, it demands a window. I built a glass furnace, thinking there would be an option there to make one. No go. Building a window with gems using b--> Y doesn't solve it, either.

Either it's a bug (hoping not) or I'm missing something. Any ideas?

His entire group drowned when he tried to have the dorfs dig in an area across the river.  Long story short, he quickly abandoned.

Bae: Maybe I should have built a bridge first.

Bae: Well, seems I lost my cherry in a spectacular manner :D

He's a good sport about it, though, and is going to try again.   Hooray! *throws confetti*

DF Modding / Good tutorials etc for tilesets

I have a friend wanting to make a tileset for me for my Dremora Citadel mod.  Are there any good tutorials on instructions out there?  What programs would work best?  I saw the wiki has the 'this symbol equals this thingy" listing but I can't find a thing on how to create non-ASCII graphics for civs, critters, etc.  Thanks in advance.

Still working on my Dremora Citadel mod.  I'd initially thought to have Perthans in a role similar to goblins and be always hostile,  but a friend suggested that I allow them to trade with the Dremora, and not unlike elves or humans, have it possible to piss them off into war.

So that is how I would like to do it.  In looking in the raws, I'm not quite sure what tags tell the game "Hey, this civ can trade with you and be friendly if you don't piss them off!" and my Google-Fu is fail today.  If someone can point me in the right direction, I think I can take it from there.  Thanks.

DF Modding / Good tutorials for creating custom races/civs?

By good, I mean one that assumes that I am a total idiot when it comes to DF modding and doesn't leave out necessary bits because the tutorial is assuming knowledge of some other aspect of modding.  I want to create custom, playable races based on various Daedra from the TES games: Dremora, Golden Saints, etc.  I'm sure you can tell I'm not concerned overly with lore here, so if we can stick to suggestions and good tutorials and stuff, I'd appreciate that.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I tried doing a custom race and making it playable with the controllable civ tag, but the game just derped and gave me dwarves like always, even though I took off their controllable civ tag.

Bekat Sternspittles the Perfect Bile of Juices has been a busy girl.  She has an enemy of 42 different civilizations, has 63 notable kills, and 64 other kills.  AND SHE IS STILL OUT THERE.

I'm sure there's been more impressive totals, so go ahead: beat her record!

I have some cookies here and it says on the container "Cotton Candy Flavored".  I thought, "So this is what that stuff tastes like!"  Also, I told a friend via email about my day as if I were a dwarf in game:  "She ate well recently.  She gets paid soon.  She was disgusted by a miasma on the bus recently.  She started a new job recently.  She talked to stupid people on the phone recently."  Funnier still (to me) someone on the news said something about the President issuing a mandate and I thought "Only a matter of time before he starts demanding slade in the dining room",

Heh.  This game has invaded my life :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / But but but...I only just now retired!

I was getting a little bored with my current fort (that and the Forgotten Beast EffPeeEss arrived, beware its deadly lag!) but I really like the world gen.  So I thought I would retire briefly and check out some other locations.

I had literally (yes) just retired and instead of the message about letting my dorfs do their own thing blah blah, I got "Your strength has been broken".  I've never seen it happen that fast.  Has anyone else ever had that happen?

In retrospect, calling it Crushedfortresses was asking for trouble.

ETA: they were instantly defeated by Fulusumbas.   KOBOLD civilization.  History doesn't say what happened exactly, but somehow this caused every last dwarf to instantly starve to death, despite the fort having well over 1000 units of food alone when I retired.  I am so embarrassed.

Just as it says on the tin.  I have maybe six pieces of flux right now, gained from a caravan.  Will be requesting moe, but since I have yet to find any, is it better to focus on iron weapons/steel armor, or steel weapons/iron armor?

I was looking at fortress stocks in 40.10 and saw a listing for ....

Books.

I know Necromancers write books, but can fortresses have books now?

I have noticed, going back to 40d, that when I play on ASCII, it's slower than molasses in January, and I don't mean the framerate.  Everything just moves slower, including time.  I could die and fossilize in the time it took today to build a trade depot.  Recalling my previous experiences, I started using graphics.  Time is way sped up, and my dorfs zoom all over the place like meth heads hopped up on Red Bull.

(today seems to be a bad simile day)

Anyway, has anyone else ever noticed this? It's the main reason I don't do ASCII.
