General Discussion / Microsoft Sucks
« on: May 22, 2009, 09:55:11 am »
Had to include a third option, or it just wouldn't be a proper forum poll.

Anyway, I'm definitely voting yes (obviously, due to the thread title). IE is nowhere near as good as Firefox, their OSs always seem annoyingly buggy, I don't see why people would pay for MS Office when OpenOffice.org is just as good if not better, as well as being free and the little advert at the bottom-left of messenger keeps popping up EVEN WHEN MESSENGER ISN'T FRIGGIN' ACTIVE (plus it has random bugs, of course).

/rant

Edit: also, winamp > media player. Just thought I should add that.

DF General Discussion / Goblin golf
« on: October 11, 2008, 06:20:34 am »
In my latest siege, my legendary axedwarf armed with a +steel battle-axe+ managed to propel a goblin bowman 45 squares diagonally (i.e. 45 squares down, 45 squares left).

This got me thinking - what's the furthest you have seen a creature (doesn't have to be a goblin) be propelled in either fortress or adventurer mode?

3
Last spring, my crazy queen stuck a steel battle axe in the elf diplomat's arm, so he left unhappy - fair enough. But the elf diplomat just arrived again, still with the axe in his arm (though his arm wasn't wounded in any way any more), and unhappily left straight away.

DF Bug Reports / [40d] 'Friendly' king and queen?
« on: September 18, 2008, 11:07:51 am »
Twolancers finally became a duchy, so the incoming king appeared on my nobles screen. My architecture, road value and offerings were already well over the needed values, so the queen shortly appeared. Though, strangely, she didn't appear on the nobles screen, and her 'pref' page was blank. She just stood at the edge of the map until her migrant status wore off, then  moved a few squares, letting the king consort appear. He wasn't on the nobles screen either, and also had a blank pref page. I looked at them on the units screen, and they were just marked as friendly. The king isn't a migrant anymore, but he still hasn't moved, so no-one else has entered the map yet.

I've never actually had a King/Queen before, but I assume this is a bug?

Update: The king consort moved, letting in a few peasants and royal guards. These were all working properly, but then the advisor arrived who is pretty much the same as the king and queen.

DF Bug Reports / [40d] 1x1 food stockpile problem
« on: September 15, 2008, 04:32:23 pm »
I found a few topics on this in the gameplay questions board, but not in the bug reports, so:

My prison is finally seeing some use (Didn't mean to export those leggings...), so I added a 1x1 food stockpile and a 1x1 booze stockpile next to each chain. Then I remembered that this only makes dwarves haul an empty barrel to each stockpile, rather than bring food and drink. I think someone said that this was so there was a barrel in each food stockpile which could be used to store any food which needs a barrel, but it was rather pointless for booze. So...yeah. Empty barrels instead of food and booze.

DF Bug Reports / [40d] ...was unhappy with the lack of work last week.
« on: September 09, 2008, 05:01:19 pm »
Soon after the dwarven caravan left, a migrant wave came to say hi. I drafted them all into the military, apart from one engineer who I thought would make a good siege operator. It wasn't long until winter came around, and then I noticed on my units screen that she was attending a meeting. A quick look at her thoughts revealed that she was unhappy with the lack of work last season, even though she hadn't even been in the fort a month, so there was no time to do any real work.

(Strangely, she was also irritated at having to give somebody water, even though it says she is compassionate...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Guards actually guarding?
« on: September 07, 2008, 09:03:01 am »
While browsing my unit list I noticed something different than usual. One of my royal guards had the action "Guard Tax Collector" and was following my tax collector around - how long has this been going on? I thought the royal guards just sparred and rested their broken spines all the time.

DF Bug Reports / [40c] Welcome, engineer, to the miners guild!
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:32:02 am »
My mayor just held a meeting about job scarcity with my engineer, who was unhappy with the lack of work. Then an announcement appeared telling me that my mayor had taken a request from the miners guild. My engineer has no mining skill, does not have mining enabled and (to my knowledge) has never touched a pick in his life. Also, there are no new mandates (which AFAIK there should be for guild requests).

My mayor is a miner, if that is at all relevant.

DF Bug Reports / [40c] Thief stealing from goblins?
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:57:08 pm »
There was a goblin siege, so I raised my drawbridge and began organising my defenses. But while I was waiting for my siege operator to get ready, I saw "A thief has stolen (Iron bolts [32])!"

I wondered how they had managed to steal them since, even if they had came before I raised the drawbridge, they would have to have gotten past several cage traps and 3 war dogs (And anyone entering the fort must be adjacent to a war dog at at least one point).

Then I had a thought. There was one goblin crossbowman in the siege, so I looked in his quiver, and it was empty. That thief made this siege a lot easier for me :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Tame zombie dragon?
« on: September 01, 2008, 11:33:52 am »
After 2 babies and 1 child had been kidnapped, I saw the announcement "The dragon Roar McFireybreath has come!" (Okay, that wasn't its name)

I took a look, and it turned out to be a zombie dragon. I caught it in a cage trap, but can it be tamed? It hasn't killed, or even injured anything or anyone.

Edit: I've only just realised how stupid that question sounds, and that I should just go to the kenels and try - but I'm asking because I don't have the dungeon master yet and I'm extremely impatient...but if no-one knows, I can just wait and see.

DF Bug Reports / [40c] Where'd my baby go?
« on: September 01, 2008, 10:04:28 am »
There were a couple of goblin ambushes, so I sent out 6 legendary wrestlers and 5 marksdwarves which killed/scared away all of the goblins. I left them on duty outside my fort, just in case there were more. Later on, I saw the message "A kidnapper has made of with Urist McBaby!" (I can't remember the name...). I checked, and, the baby belonged to one of my wrestlers outside.

It just seems rather strange that a goblin can sneak up to 6 champions and 5 marksdwarves, rip a baby out from a dwarf's hands, and escape unnoticed...

DF Bug Reports / [40c] Engraver beaten by guard, then stuck engraving
« on: August 30, 2008, 07:59:55 am »
My mayor mandated the construction of billon items, but I have no billon, so I just ignored him. Later on, when I ran out of time, the mayor (for some reason) blamed my legendary engraver, and sentenced him to about 45 days in prison. I don't have a prison yet, so a fortress guard just beat my engraver. Then, my engraver just stood still, apparently engraving the floor. When I undesignated the floor, he could go off and do something else, but I couldn't re-designate it for engraving - this may be because there was a spattering of blood on the tile.

EDIT: Here's a save, from before I undesignated the tile for engraving.

DF Bug Reports / [known bug, ignore this...] Sparring/slaughter thought
« on: August 29, 2008, 08:08:57 am »
A speardwarf and a swordsdwarf were sparring, when the speardwarf suffocated. Very sad.

The strange thing is the swordsdwarf's thought - "She took joy in slaughter lately."

The speardwarf was her only ever kill, and they weren't enemies.

DF Bug Reports / [39f] Purring maggot meat
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:19:40 pm »
I could request purring maggot meat from my dwarven civ, and they brought it the next year.

Mmm, chewy.

DF Bug Reports / [39f]Uneven ocean in adventure mode
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:53:37 am »
I started a 1x16 fortress (using nanofortress) which was all over the ocean apart from one tile, sso I could try and build a huge bridge over the ocean. The fortress ran perfectly, with no lag whatsoever. The ocean was something like this:
Code: [Select]
                                             XXXXXX   X = land
777777777777777777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
77777777777XXX7777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777XXXXX777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777XXXXXXXXX77777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Nothing wrong with that at all, so I just played for a while...lalala...playing...dwarves are all dying of thirst...miasma from all the corpses...people are jumping into the ocean...I'm out of barrels...my brewers are dead...abandoned the fortress.

But then something bad happened.

I went back there as an adventurer, and there was nauseating lag. I managed to get further up the bridge, but then noticed that the sea was a lot lower than usual. Then I realised that the sea was now like this:
Code: [Select]
                                                   XXXXXX
                 121                      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    1112345667677XXX7777777777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777777777XXXXX777777777777777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
7777777777777XXXXXXXXX77777XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

When I was searching around the bug report board, I found this - I'm not sure if it's the same problem.
