I tried walking across a frozen sea, but somehow got contained in a huge prism (40x40x1 ?) of ice, so I tried taking a nap to wait for the ocean to thaw out a bit.

After the travel screen display that appears in naps, instead of waking up in a place that makes sense, I got a message that I discovered an expansive cavern deep underground. All my inventory is gone. I have lost my musicality. I am a troll. Is this a dream? Is this hell? My character used to be a dwarf if that matters.

There are goblin-caps and nether-caps. Would that make this layer 2 or 3? It's a vanilla world / game.

I haven't made any moves yet because I don't know if I should preserve anything for a bug report, or if this is a known problem or it doesn't matter. If I can stay a troll adventurer that would be pretty cool though.

e: The ocean god who cursed me offered me an easy suicide with the discovery of a magma pool. When I refused, he mocked me by revealing raw adamantine, down here under a vast ocean, twice. Makes me wonder,do any of the dwarfs who settle fortresses on glaciers deal with these problems?

no for it's an Adventure mode related trick more so than a Fort mode one.
This trick is caused by the game's big list of characters/creatures loaded every time you move somewhere or travel/sleep.
This list is random except for the 0 spot which is where the adventurer is. Glaciers/oceans and with Runesmith cage traps you could cause the game to unload your adventurer and replace it with a near by creature.
Fort mode does not have this issue for the game doesn't worry over whos in slot 0.

Try only sleeping an hour, and maybe try having Swimmer greater than or equal to Adequate. Try to take the nap during night when it's less likely the water will warm up and thaw out. You won't get bogeyman'd in the ocean because they don't show up there for some reason. It may be important to be in a field between ice walls when you try it. I don't know what you've tried so far.
