Looking for a good wilderness survival game
« on: January 31, 2012, 09:06:03 pm »

Hello there!

I really love wilderness survival, i enjoy watching man vs wild and such, and i loved playing Unreal world.
I'm searching for a wilderness survival game wich isnt Unreal World.
UW is good, but.. i dunno, after some time, when you have a cottage, traps everywhere and even some guys living with you in their own cottage, it gets boring.
So yea, i'm basically searching for a game where;
-You most survive wilderness
-Eat, Drink, Sleep and such
-Build basic shelters against the weather and such
-Make rudimentary tools to make more advanced shelters (or something like that)
-Make rudimentary hunting devices to be able to hunt bigger game
-And all what is about surviving a entirely wild world

Zombie survival games dont count :) Cataclysm and Zomboid included!

Like i say, i played Unreal World, wich i still find kinda cool, but i'm looking for something else.
And please, by armok's sake PLEASE don't mention minecraft...

Games i played;
-Minecraft (wich isnt really based on survival)
-Unreal World
-Wurm Online
-Stranded 2
-Fallout: New Vegas hardcore mode (i cant play modded, as i have it on 360)

Games proposed;
-Deus/Robinson Requiem
-Lost in Blue etc.
-Notrium (didnt really took time to check it out yet)
-Warcraft 3 mods (didnt check it out yet)
-Cataclysm Roguelike (Already played, im serching for a Wilderness survival game, not for a zombie survival game (be it realistic or not))

Games Proposed that i enjoyed;
-Last Winter (but it lack development, and the dev isnt working on it much (he's in the army and is still on service. Canadian didnt return from irak and such yet...))

Fallout New Vegas in hardcore mode has some of the things you want, but it's post apocalyptic and the wasteland settler mod is no longer being worked on, as far as I know.

last winter is a wilderness survival game set in the 1600s in quebec. It can be pretty hard core, although it's a)not finished b) fairly buggy and c)on a developmental hiatus as it has reached the limits of what the flash engine can do.

The demo version gives you two in game days with a character, which is often enough time to die horribly. The full game costs something like $10.

Last Winter showed up very interresting.

And by a "developmental hiatus" you mean they stopped working on it temporaly?
Will definitively be keeping an attentive eye on this game.
I like the setup; the things with coureurs des bois and all this (its ironic, cauz' i dreamed i was a coureur des bois just last night xD), and the game will be intteresting when it'll get more developed.

Checking it.

any other good wild survival games you guys can throw at me?

Lost in Blue is a decent game, if you're of the portable mindset (for the DS). It feels too story driven, and can get you too focused on attempting to get the next big thing for the sake of staving off boredom.

Survivor Kids for the Gameboy is similar, yet older and a bit archaic at times.

There are also plenty of survivor mods for Warcraft 3, but only Jungle Troll Tribes and Wilderness Survival (go figure) are any good.

I'm sad that there aren't as many of these games as I would like.

Indie developers really need to start po*ping wild survival games all over the place.
Its hard to search one too, cauz if you type "survival video-game" on google, you'll just come up with 300+ zombie survival games...
And its not even survival!

PS: Doctor Who for the win

I dimly remember Robinson's Requiem, if you want to go really old-school (and uber hard-core)...

urb, the guy who makes is a) seems to have some form of programming ADD, he's currently got three projects in active development and b)in the Canadian military and unable to work of the games for months at a time. The last devblog on last winter was from november, 2010.

Why has no one mentioned the Stranded series yet? Or to a degree Cataclysm Roguelike. Or Unreal World. All worth looking at and besides Unreal World they are all free.
