Ghost of who?
« on: January 31, 2012, 02:21:47 pm »

I just had a ghost of Litast Idalen, beekeeper appear to haunt my fortress...

Who is he? To my knowledge, he hasn't died in my fort. He's not in my unit list (deceased or otherwise). His body or remains doesn't appear to be anywhere on the map (and no creatures have died in a way their bodies are destroyed or unretrievable). And the coffin that he has been auto-assigned to is empty.

Ok, I'll engrave a slab, but what gives? Where'd he come from?

Did you reclaim a fort?  I think this sort of thing can happen if you do.  Otherwise, I haven't a clue.

It's possible that he could have been a merchant or diplomat. IIRC though the merchants and diplomats have skills, they aren't counted as members of their respective professions until after they have died.

Once the previous liason is dead, they appoint a new one. If you have the current liason trapped /abandon then reclaim, they'll send random Dwarves with their professions showing. (Soap maker diplomats are the subtlest diplomats)

First player fort in the world. No reclaim.

To my knowledge no dwarven merchants or guards have died, but that's not impossible. The caravan did once tussle with a cyclops, but I didn't notice any casualties. (They saved one of my dwarves even that was too slow to get inside.)

A human caravan did get massacred by a goblin siege, but this isn't a human ghost (at least the description says it's fond of drink and industry). Would human merchants leave ghosts anyway?

No. Right now the only creatures that leave ghosts are dwarves.

No, the only ghosts you'll get will be from creatures defined as part of the entity you're playing with that are a part of your civilisation ;)

In other words, ghosts are annoying because sometimes they are unexplained, like they should be... :P

Yes, they call you a rasict, and then they shot you and take your cocaine.

I suspected this was true but wasn't 100% certain. Thanks for answering the question though, nobody who was on the modding forum at the time of my first post seemed to know the answer.

I'm fairly sure I also had a diplomat or merchant die, and have his profession change to a spinner or something.

I wonder if it was a dwarf that died in that area during worldgen?

That doesn't happen as far as I know.
