Capital persistance?
« on: January 31, 2012, 03:14:25 am »

Ok, so this is my first post up here in suggestions. Feelin' like I been dwarfin' about long enough now to make one. Did a search to see if this has been suggested before, and found this

which isn't quite what I have in mind.

Heres my idea. High level / particularly incredible forts could have a bit of persistance. I've got my first real fort here. At least, the first one to survive a decent amount of time. 47 years in fact. This place has traps, military, no want, piles of candy things, capital of the civ, ultraskyscraper serving as a megatomb blah blah everything a dwarf could want. But then I come to a problem.

I'm bored.

Understandable. The joy in this game (for me) is building the fort from the ground up. I mean, the fort practically maintains itself at this point. But why would the dwarves just up and leave this paradise? All I can do is abandon the capital of dwarven civilization if I want to start a new fort. My suggestion is to have a fort persist as a CPU controlled outpost after you abandon it. Not EVERY fort would do this, maybe after you fullfilled yet more requirements. Say, if it hits the 50 year mark? 100 years? Maybe a few billion in crafted objects? I dunno but whatever the requirements, they should be something that is a very difficult feat to accomplish, but it would add some.... lasting reward to building a fort that stands the test of time. Seems like sort of a letdown for me to just up and leave the place. Maybe after you reach said requirements, you could choose to abandon or to have it persist?

I'd love to gen a world, play it for a thousand years in game from year one, and look back and see that first dwarf city I built made into a bastion of the dorf way of life a millenium later.

Is this a good idea?

While the link you provided indeed isn't exactly what you are talking about there are lots of other threads where this has been suggested. Mostly the suggestions are related to game keep recording the history of world even during/after the fortress has been built.

Now, if my memory serves correctly, this is already planned at least by some extent. At least Toady has mentioned somewhere that his plan is to make it possible to visit your fortress after you "abandoned" it and meet all the dwarves still living there. I see no reason why he wouldn't expand it to fortress mode as well, especially since the world economic is going to be affected by your fortress(es) and the production possibilities of other sites.

But still, I like this idea. It would make totally sense to make a grand capital, abandon it, start a new fortress with same civilization and the caravans/liaison/monarch comes from the new capitol. And of course the trade goods the caravan bring should be affected by the resources of the new capital.

Exactly! It would add a whole new extensive and very welcome layer of strategy, realism, and depth to fortress mode.

I couldn't imagine this not having been suggested before. There would have to be a way for the other civilizations to simulate this sort of thing happening for them, too, or there would be some balance issues.

On that note, imagine having a goblin civilization suddenly generating a "Grand Capital", and gaining massive war potential.

This usually goes by the name "retire fortress" and is one of the most frequently posted suggestions of all time:

I absolutely love it when footkerchief comes in with his big list of when it's been suggested before.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

Is this all footkerchief does is keep lists of urls to duplicate ideas? I find the search tool for the site to be lacking. But I *do* make the attempts to find answets b4 posting.

That being said...

I'd love to see a retirement option, i believe if we stay interested in DF long enough, we will in fact witness this option.
