Just for fun, the current (January 5, 2034) industrial/scientific/political situation:

Civilian Interests:

Nix Labs
Formerly Bartholomay Research, founded by Nix (formerly Thad Bartholomay), a biologist by training but accomplished in many other fields. Nix has been awarded the Newton Award for his work on Trans-Newtonian Technology. Nix Labs is responsible for many notable works including the NTET THRUST engine series and the Xplore variant space ship classes.
Two young power and propulsion specialists have recently joined the organization, James Mcbay and Karen Lamay.

Haan Industries
Founded by Scotty Haan. Haan Industries focuses both in theoretical research and practical design. Scotty Haan is a missiles and kinetic weapons scientist by training, but ultimately most of his accomplishments are outside that field.
Haan Industries is responsible for many space ship components in use today, including a licensed adaptation of the Nix Labs' NTET THRUST engine called the Micro Buzzer and the Enforcer class patrol vessel. Haan Industries works closely with the government on most of their projects, developing missile weapons systems (like the one in use in the Fortitude Missile Base and a new series of EM and thermal sensors. Haan Industries also controls a major stake in earth's industrial capacity.

Pelland Research
Originally founded by Maria Pelland, the company experienced many early successes with developments of a cargo handling system and the DirectPoint active sensors and targeting systems, among other work. When Maria died, Numbers Leno, an extremely talented missiles specialist joined (and took over) the company, reviving its faltering image. Leno brought his own work on railguns and beam weapon targeting systems to the company, making it one of the most competitive government contractors out there.

Transue Performace
A new entrant to the civilian contracting and research field, Transue Performance specializes in government logistics work and ground combat advancement. Founded by Santos Transue, the company is a unique firm with little competition in its field. An independent scientist, Randal Clearo, has been seen on the Transue Performance campus more and more frequently. Some speculate that the defensive systems specialist will be joining the firm int he near future.

Independent Scientists
Leif Dulak- a crappy missiles specialist.
Henry Lighthall- a decent missiles specialist. Long been speculated to join Haan Industries to up the competition against Pelland Research; but has not happened yet.
Drew Mchaney- A biology crappy expert. He finds it hard to find any work.
Ariel Kellams- A crappy Defensive Systems specialist.

Palomo Group
Its roots are in civilian shipping on earth, the company has developed the Atlas class cargo ship. Also own Palomo Shipworks, a 70,000 ton shipyard. A competitor to Haan Industries in off world mining exploitation; many analysts think Palomo will be forced to focus only on ship building at their Palomo Shipworks asset and/or civilian shipping in the future. The lack of scientific brainpower behind the company forces them to license any and all technology from other firms (for example the Atlas uses the NTET THRUST from Nix Labs and the cargo handling system from Pelland Research; so ultimately the company benefits little from building Atlas ships once licensing costs are brought into the picture).

Wessel Space Project
The result of corporate investments from dozens of major companies across earth, the Wessel Space Project is the second largest commercial shipyard (second of two...)

Government Interests:

Governor Elsie Perego
Governor of earth. Elected on an expansionist campaign.

Elissa Mcbroom
Former governor of earth. Two terms. Defeated by Perego in '33.

Dewitt Dauzat
Appointed manager of Asteroid #14.

Royce Cosby
Appointed manager of Asteroid #2.

Major General Alfonzo Lomonaco
Commander of all earth ground forces.

Rear Admiral Roseanne Tolmich
Commander of Fleet Headquarters.

Commander Logan Salters
Fleet Headquarters - Communications staff officer.

Commander Donn Knopp
Fleet Headquarters - Fighter Ops staff officer.

Commander Winford Lyall
Fleet Headquarters - Intelligence staff officer.

Commander Laquita Munerlyn
Fleet Headquarters - Logistics staff officer.

Commander Kyle Schmelz
Fleet Headquarters - Operations staff officer.

Commander Nickolas Tiernan
Fleet Headquarters - Public affairs staff officer.

Commander Susan Lastra
Fleet Headquarters - Survey staff officer.

Captain Chaoticag
Captain of the Nix Labs' Xplore One. Recipient of the Solar Star and Lost In Space Badge.

Others
Captains of Atlas vessels, Island, Strongman, New Horizons, Enforcers.
And all unassigned officers.
And all assigned ground force officers.

Having already recognized potential in Mcbay's Jump Point Theory, Nix is now starting to see some serious progress int he research. Unfortunately McBay is still young and new to large scale research projects and has trouble handling many labs at one time. Nix has decided to take over the project. His experience and skill will help to see the theory fully explored sooner and possible even better.
Nix has put in a request to Governor Perego for more government assistance int he form of grants and resources. Perego has tentatively provided a small increase in resources, but wants further information and a full report on progress before she will commit fully to the project.

February 7, 2034
In a clever move, Nix released a transcript of his report to Governor Perego to the media prior to his presentation about Jump Point Theory. The report struck at the heart of the imagination of the voting public, creating what could only be called a frenzied call for enhanced research in the field. Before even hearing the presentation, Governor Perego had already been inundated with calls from the public to OK the distribution of resources to Nix Labs and Nix' research on Jump Point Theory.
Needless to say, Perego accepted Nix's request for grants following the presentation. Nix now has his full capacity of 35 labs at his exposure.
Numbers Leno is pissed. As a result of the shifting of government resources and aid to Nix Labs, Pelland Research has just lost access to 21 research labs.
James Mcbay is also angry. Jump Point Theory was his idea. His project. Nix did not even mention his name during the presentation to Governor Perego...
Reports indicate Mcbay has been seen visiting the Pelland Research campus.

The NASA - Houston Shipyard has been retooled for the Xplore mod 1. Captain Chaoticag brought the Xplore One back to earth to participate in discussions of how to proceed with construction. Chaoticag, Nix, Governor Perego and others came to the conclusion that they would build two of the new mod 1s. Construction is estimated to take 17 months. Until then, Chaoticag will remain earthbound. Once the mod 1s roll off the slipways he will take command of one of them and continue his work. The fate of the second is not yet decided. It may be reserved on earth for emergency use; alternatively it may be issued crew and captain to operate in conjunction with Chaoticag's ship.

During a widely anticipated televised report, a Nix Labs spokesman revealed the details of Jump Point Theory. Lead researcher Nix finished the project, unveiling the potential for jump point travel. His data is strong and even the most fervent critics have trouble disputing the results. By utilizing Trans-Newtonian technology and elements it should be possible to build 'jump engines' of a sort that would allow for a space ship to pass through a 'jump point' to other parts of the universe instantly.
The report warns that inter-galactic travel is still not assured... First these so called jump points must be found, if there even are any. And that will take all new technology and research just to build a tool capable of finding them. Once a jump point is found, it cannot be exploited until a whole different system is developed that can facilitate the jump. The spokesman has indicated Nix Labs will start work on these followup technologies and systems immediately.

In other news, scientist James Mcbay has left Nix Labs. In their own announcement, Haan Industries has revealed Mcbay has joined their team as a power and propulsion specialist. Fellow power expert Karen Lamay is following her colleague Mcbay in the move.

October 17, 2034

Another scientific breakthrough from nix Labs, this time a gravitation survey sensor. The device can be used to survey for 'potential' jump points within the solar system. Governor Perego has made it a priority to see a gravitational survey sensor in space ASAP.

Two firms have presented space ship designs to the governor for approval.
Nix Labs, inventor of the gravitational survey sensor, has presented a design based around the NTET FORCE One engine. Equipped with high powered grav survey sensors it can reach a max speed of 2000km/s with an endurance of 108 billion kilometers. It checks in with a 2,500 ton hull.
Code: [Select]
NL Searcher class Gravsurvey Ship    2,500 tons     239 Crew     539.2 BP      TCS 50  TH 100  EM 0
2000 km/s     Armour 1-16     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/4/0     Damage Control Rating 2     PPV 0
Maint Life 6.24 Years     MSP 270    AFR 25%    IFR 0.3%    1YR 12    5YR 179    Max Repair 100 MSP

Bartholomay Research - NTET FORCE One - MIL SPEC (4)    Power 25    Fuel Use 100%    Signature 25    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 150,000 Litres    Range 108.0 billion km   (625 days at full power)

Gravitational Survey Sensors (4)   4 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Haan Industries has presented its own design. Built around the NTET Micro Buzzer engine, the ship is capable of speeds up to 2500km/s with an endurance of 45 billion kilometers. While it's grav survey sensors suit is significantly weaker than the Nix design, its small hullsize of 1000 tons and fast speed create a ship capable of getting on station faster than the opposing design.
Code: [Select]
HI Magicman class Gravitational Survey Vessel    1,000 tons     85 Crew     206 BP      TCS 20  TH 50  EM 0
2500 km/s     Armour 1-8     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/1/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
Maint Life 9.68 Years     MSP 129    AFR 8%    IFR 0.1%    1YR 2    5YR 37    Max Repair 100 MSP

HI - NTET Micro Buzzer (1)    Power 50    Fuel Use 1000%    Signature 50    Armour 0    Exp 15%
Fuel Capacity 250,000 Litres    Range 45.0 billion km   (208 days at full power)

Gravitational Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Current shipyard situation:

No shipyard can accept either design at the moment. Only the Unity Naval yard and NASA - Houston yards can handle the Searcher's hull. The Unity Two can accommodate the smaller Magicman.
The first shipyard to be ready for a potential refit is the Unity Two with three slipways in May of the next year. NASA - Houston will be ready in July next year with two slipways. But it should be noted that the Unity Naval Yard will be able to handle a retooling much faster than either of the other shipyards (instantly). So while it does not become available for use until August of next year, it will be able to immediately begin construction of either design on two slipways.
Governor Perego must make a decision which ship design to accept and build.
(accepting opinions)

January 10, 2035

Governor Perego has announced the completion of a series of deep space tracking stations built on earth. Designed to help keep track of vessels in space the ten stations can also be moved to other system bodies to expand coverage.
Haan Industries has also revealed that James Mcbay has completed research into Max Squadron Jump Radius 50k. Haan Industries also claims research into Jump Drive Efficiency 3 will be finishing up early February.
Nix Labs has in return announced research on Max Jump Squadron Size 3, headed by Nix himself, will be finishing around February 8.

February 11, 2035

Following Haan Industries' Karen Lamay's work on efficiency completed just a few days prior, Nix Labs' newest research enables the practical design of a jump engine.
During closed door meetings, Scotty Haan and Nix come to the agreement to 'share' the invention of jump engine technologies. As a part of the deal Haan Industries will spearhead the research and production of the actual jump engine while licensing some of the work from Nix Labs. This also allows Nix to begin research on a revolutionary new technology: terraforming modules.

March 26, 2035

A maintenance failure on one of the Enforcers has brought attention to fleet command about the aging hulls. As such, Solar Close Patrol, consisting of the first two Enforcers built has been recalled from active duty for overhaul.

April 7, 2035
A new commercial shipyard has been built. A partnership between Haan Industries and Newgate Construction, it is called Haan-Newgate Spaceworks.

April 17, 2035

Mercassium has been depleted on earth.
Records show that there are still 42,010 tons stockpiled on earth, with minimal current usage. But the end of new supply is noteworthy. it brings up the debates about exploration and space travel once again. Now, more than ever is it imperative to secure another earth-like source of TN elements. The possibility of jump point travel and exploration has created a strong opinion among the population that humanity needs to explore to survive. Scientists like Nix are working to remind people and politicians to be cautious and not jump to deeply into any single mindset. Nix warns that it is still possible that no earth-like source of TN elements will ever be found. As such continued expansion must be tempered with resourcefulness. Nix suggests that the government and Governor Perego should focus grants and resources exclusively on exploration based pursuits.
As a part of the whole discussion the previously dismissed 'A' word has been coming up more and more. If humans on earth can go into space, and potentially travel across the universe instantly using jump point theory, why can't something else? Talk of aliens is still easily dismissed by most prominent researchers, but a growing number of politicians and fringe scientists are beginning to believe it is a true concern.
No one disagrees that it is statistically likely that 'life' exists elsewhere, and due to the whole 'infinite' part of the universe it could be possible that intelligent life exists too... But prior to jump point theory or Trans-Newtonian thought, that possibility was completed negated by the sheer distances involved... Distance is now potentially a non-factor...

May 22, 2035

Asteroid # 14 is pretty much used up. It still has 2,182 tons of boronide at .92 accessibility, but with the other five minerals depleted it is not worth it to keep the 100 automated mines on it. They will be moved by Atlas cargo ships to Asteroid # 64.
Also, with the addition of the 4th slipways to Unity Two, the shipyard is now able to be retooled. Considering the growing pressure from the public, Governor Perego has decided to OK the Haan Industries Magicman design for construction. Unity Two will be retooled for the vessel immediately.

Damn, Nix is a meanie. Can I claim Scotty Haan? Add Sheb as a middle name, so you can keep track easily.

That being said, our design is superior. Survey crafts spend most of their time flying, not surveying. So it's better to fly fast and survey slowly than the opposite.

Holy thanks god. Finally filling out the scientist deficit.
Erin Fuest has joined the scientific community. She is a construction specialist. She is a history buff and indifferent. Currently unaffiliated with any firms, she will immediately go to work with some small government grants to develop a jump gate construction module. Theoretically the module should be able to stabilize jump gate wormholes, eliminating the need for a jump engine to pass through them

Try to work an exclusivity contract with Fuest where Haan Industry will support all her research in exchange for an exclusive right to use the Modules for 5 years.

Start expanding our shipyard to produce Jump Gate Builders.

June 24, 2035
After reports of scientist Erin Fuest being seen at the Haan Industries corporate offices over a period of days got out, rumors started to fly.
But ultimately a Haan Industries report by Scotty Sheb Haan himself revealed that Fuest has come under an exclusive contract with Haan Industries.
HI will throw 100% support behind Fuest's work. In return, the jump gate construction module technology (should the research actually create something of value) will be licensed exclusively to Haan Industries for a 5 year period.
Haan is now working furiously to get their partnership commercial shipyard up and running to a state that it will be able to accommodate a vessel large enough to carry the module, once developed.

August 11, 2035
Governor Perego has unveiled the Chaoticag Navy Yard, a new military shipyard named in honor of earth's premier space explorer, Captain Chaoticag.

August 16, 2035
Solar Close Patrol's two enforcers have just finished overhaul. They will return to duty while the System Close Patrol's Enforcers go through overhaul.
The Unity Naval Yard is also done expanding to two slipways. It can now build two ships up to 5000tons at a time. Governor Perego has instructed the yard to remain available for an indefinite amount of time.

August 21, 2035
Unity Two has finished retooling for the HI Magicman class gravitational survey vessel. Governor Perego orders construction of four Magicman vessels to begin immediately. Although the work is being done on a navy yard, Haan Industries will make a pretty penny. Nix Labs will likewise benefit, for the NTET Micro Buzzer is based on Nix research and has its own licensing fees associated with it. That and the grav survey sensor is a Nix Labs invention, too.

Nix has also finished work on his terraforming module research.
He presented a design to Governor Perego that utilizes the terraforming module which was accepted enthusiastically. Named the Nix Labs Eden, it is essentially a huge terraforming space station.
Code: [Select]
NL Eden class Space Station    504,900 tons     2050 Crew     5799.6 BP      TCS 10098  TH 0  EM 0
1 km/s     Armour 1-564     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
MSP 7    Max Repair 500 MSP
Habitation Capacity 50,000
Terraformer: 10 module(s) producing 0.01 atm per annum

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes
This design is classed as an Orbital Habitat for construction purposes
With 10 terraforming modules per Eden, it can drastically alter a planet's atmosphere. Nix, the imaginative scientist he is, wants to deploy Eden(s) to Mars to create a new earth-like world. Governor Perego, while enthusiastic about the Eden design, has excused any Mars project as unpractical and not worth the investment.
So Nix, still the imaginative scientist he is, has began a public opinion campaign calling for Mars colonization.

October 13, 2035
The first two Xplore mod 1s finished construction at NASA - Houston. Captain Chaoticag has switched command to one of them. He is at liberty to name the ship as he pleases. The second ship will remain on earth as an emergency reserve.

October 23, 2035
And already Chaoticag has made a significant discovery...

Comet #3 is about 1.5billion kilometers from earth right now. Governor Perego has decided to take advantage of this opportunity and deploy automated mines tot he comet. The Atlas task group will cease moving auto mines from Asteroid #14 to #64 and instead send them to the comet.

Damn, Sheb got the new kid.  I'm loving the industrial/scientific/domestic/political disputes here, adds a lot of realism, it would be so funny if aliens were to invade right about now.

Hmm...colonizing Mars, are there TN elements there?  Also, is it alright if I can get the next cool scientist to work for Nix Labs?  To even the odds between me and Sheb.

What other projects are Nix Labs working on ( or can work on in the future )?

Nice LP so far, I really hope this doesn't die.

There are dozens of military people available. A few posts back I listed a decent amount of relevant people. They are all still relevant. Or, you could take an unassigned person with the hopes of getting a desired post. Ships are being built and designed...

Story. Just as it is story that Nix would benefit from use of the terraformer modules. The only game benefit would be to have terraformers on hand for the future and/or to spread eggs across baskets- aka, should earth suddenly be nuked to dust Mars might survive.

Also, is my request for a future young good scientist approved or denied?

As for a scientist... It's complicated.
Sheb grabbed a deal with Fuest because he was quick to act after she came on the scene... So I gave credit for his activity. That and, honestly, sheb's character is not personally the most skilled. Haan is a 10% missile specialist, completely blown out of the water by Numbers Leno's 65%. So Haan Industries is trying to maintain its competitiveness through clever sponsorship of other scientists... Unless Sheb Haan wants to drop fighting for research and instead focus on manufacturing, component design, and/or ship design (which they have a background in).

The way I see it is, historically, Nix Labs has churned out tons of theoretical research. Nix is developing the new breakthrough techs and concepts that open the way for practical design (trans-Newtonian tech, jump point theory, etc.). He was a high bonus high capacity researcher so he was great at filling in in the fields no other scientist was specialized in.
But recently scientists with actual expertise in those fields have started popping up. That cuts into his potential to do research. Not to mention he is sick.
So now Nix is in a similiar boat as Sheb Haan and needs to decide what course he wants to take Nix Labs on...
He had access to the power and propulsion scientists, but after deliberately taking credit from mcbay that bridge kinda burned down. Mind you Nix did do the majority of the research, his 35% bonus over 35 labs is still superior to low bonus/capacity scientists, so while mcbay started the project (and another power expert who showed up did a bit too), nix finished it.
Nix is still a very capable geologist, I should note. Worst comes to worst he can focus on on-location geological surveys.

The current breakdown is thus:

Nix Labs
-Nix, best biologist, capable geologist, Newton Award recipient and the most well known scientist.
-Other biologists
*Responsible for a lot of groundwork research. Owns patents (to be clear, all this talk of patents, licensing, leasing, etc is story) in Nuclear Thermal Engine Technology, Terraforming modules, gravitation survey sensors, and more. Has done some ship design with the Xplore varients and Searcher class (but the Searcher was not [yet] picked up).
>Current research focus (strongpoint) is Biology/Genetics.

Haan Industries
-Scotty Sheb Haan, mediocre missile specialst
-James Mcbay, Karen Lamay, and I think one other power and propulsion specialist with the highest bonus.
-Other power/prop specialists
*Responsible for a lot of older technologies and some missiles work. Developed all of the existing missile launch systems. Designed the Strongman tug, New Horizon space station, and Magicman grav survey vessel. Some work in EM and Thermal sensor research and design.
>Current research focus (strongpoint) is Power/propulsion.

Pelland Research
-Numbers Leno, best missile specialist.
-other missile specialists
*Responsible for the DirecPoint active and firecontrol sensors; legacy work in sensors. Designed the XenoCore powerplant. Designed the Enforcer class and its Liberator railgun. Did A TON of research in railgun tech and missile techs. Considered the biggest military contractor due to the heavy weapons specialization. Legacy work on cargo handling system and duranium armor.
>Current research focus (strongpoint) is missiles/kinetic weapons.

Transue Performance
-Santos Transue, logicstis/ground combat specialist.
-Randal Clearo, defensive systems specialist.
-Other logistics and ground specialists
*Responsible for high density duranium armor (based on Pelland foundation), I think they did the troop transport bay, too...
>Current research focus (strongpoints) are Logistics/Ground Combat and Defensive Systems.

In limbo we have Fuest... Construction/Production Specialist. While she is on contract with Haan she is not a full member fo the team. Technically once her work on jump gate construction modules is complete, she will be independent again.
Also note: There are several other scientists I have not listed here, or even mentioned at all- they either suck, or are doing work for in conjunction with their specialty (for example, another scientist working on a defensive system tech is doing so for Transue; or a scientist working on missile tech is likely doing so for Pelland)
Also, if I recall correctly there are no sensors specialists... But, if one should show up they will more than likely be attracted to Pelland due to the legacy work on sensors (from namesake Maria Pelland). At the same time Haan may benefit from trying to coerce a sensors specialist to join since he has already entered the field with his Thermal and EM work.
And another also, there are some energy weapons specialists floating around. None fo the four big firms have picked them up yet.

I may be missing some info, since I actually wrote most of this from memory; I don't have game available to me right now.

Hmm.  I'll take Donn Knopp (don't bother renaming) and hope pirates arise.  Otherwise I'm going to furiously fight to get promoted to captaining our second military vessel with a jump drive (i.e. destroyer, cruiser etc) and boldly defend - Chaoticag will probably get the first because of his existing reputation for exploration and adventuarrs.  =B

You sure you dont want a rename? You will be in a good place to change to a ship command once a big one is available, due to your posting in fleet command; but they will miss you, since you are a good desk leader.
On a side note, I'm not feeling very well so I might not get much play, if any, in tonight

Naw, Don Knopp's a pretty cool name in its own right.  I know how you feel, got whiplash during a mis-choreographed stagefight.  Rest and get plenty of fluids etc.  =P
