Chaoticag has returned to earth. The Xplore One needs to be refueled.
He will remain on earth for one day before departing again for Pluto

October 23, 2029
Bartholomay Research has developed an advanced version of the XploreR
Code: [Select]

BR Xplore - M1 class Exploration Ship    2,500 tons     229 Crew     529.5 BP      TCS 50  TH 100  EM 0
2000 km/s     Armour 1-16     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/4     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
Maint Life 2.81 Years     MSP 132    AFR 50%    IFR 0.7%    1YR 24    5YR 365    Max Repair 100 MSP

Bartholomay Research - NTET FORCE One - MIL SPEC (4)    Power 25    Fuel Use 100%    Signature 25    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 150,000 Litres    Range 108.0 billion km   (625 days at full power)

Geological Survey Sensors (4)   4 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes
Designed for endurance and quick survey of distant bodies with a little sacrifice of speed (compared to the XploreR) the Xplore - Mod 1 is ideal for deep asteroid geological surveying.
Presentation of the design is initially met with negative response from governor Mcbroom. She is weary to invest time and resources into a new exploration ship when the existing one has proved to be of little use. Thad Bartholomay resents her word choice, but is forced to accept the ruling.

Novermber 3, 2029
Chaoticag has reported deposits on Pluto of 630,738 tons and 89,557 tons of Neutronium and Boronide respectively. Charon is without.
Bartholomay instructs Chaoticag to bring the Xplore One to the inner asteroid belt and begin surveying for elements there.

At present Corbomite*, Tritanium, and Gallicite have only been found on earth.

*52 tons are on Deimos.

Scotty Haan of Haan Industries has completed research into Cyrogentic Transport. A module can effectively move up to 50,000 people in a compact space long distances over extended periods of time with minimal upkeep.

June 25, 2030
Finally, a new scientist has been trained at Earth University!
...
...
...
A missiles specialist.
Another one...
At least he is 10%.

August 4, 2030
Commander Chaoticag has been sending asteroid geological survey reports back to earth on a constant basis. While many (most?) asteroids are without Trans-Newtonian elements, several have contained deposits, some in significant numbers. The three limited resources remain relatively limited, though. There are deposits, about one for each, but they are on separate asteroids. Many scientists and politicians on earth are eagerly hoping to find a perfect asteroid with more than one type of limited element present.

August 5, 2030
Scientist Numbers Leno has just finished developing an asteroid mining module. His research unlocks the potential to mine elements from asteroids without 'putting boots on the ground'.
Governor Mcbroom has offered government support and subsidies towards any work related to bringing Leno's research to life.

August 22, 2030

Chaoticag's skills are improving. He has been captaining the Xplore One for over two and a half years now. The Xplore One, in its current loadout, has 1.7 years on its maintenance clock. With full at 20%, Chaoticag has been instructed to bring the Xplore One back to Earth for overhaul. It will also give the commander and his crew some time home with their families.

A new commercial classed shipyard is completed in close orbit. The Wessel Space Project shipyard is funded by a consortium of corporations and government grants. With the growing interest in space exploration and operations not slowing down, companies are investing fortunes into space related endeavors. While the Palomo Group has not earned anything from their huge investment in Palomo Shipworks, economists and analysts still rate their bonds as quality AAA. It is like everyone knows the commercial shipyards will payoff huge in time, just not when.

Thad Bartholomay has once again requested permission to build the Xplore Mod 1 from Governor Mcbroom. Citing Chaoticag's success finding elements on nearby asteroids, Bartholomay hopes to explore the outer belt sooner and faster by building a new ship. Mcbroom said no.

October 7, 2030
In a stunning press release, the Palomo Group has revealed that they have designed and are ready to begin building a commercial space ship. Classed the Palomo Group Atlas, the vessel is designed to operate as a heavy duty cargo vessel. Capable of carrying an entire mine, or ideally auto-mine, in its cargo hold, the Atlas potentially opens the way to practically exploit off-earth TN element deposits.
Haan Industries, the firm behind research on asteroid mining modules, was expected to be the first to make a breakthrough with a practical design for TN element mining, but in this surprise announcement it is apparent that the Palomo Group has beaten them.
Governor Mcbroom quickly authorized and committed support for the Atlas project. The first customer: The government.
Code: [Select]
PG - Atlas class Cargo Ship    50,000 tons     601 Crew     634 BP      TCS 1000  TH 1125  EM 0
1125 km/s     Armour 1-120     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
MSP 8    Max Repair 16 MSP
Cargo 25000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 45

Bartholomay Research - NTET FORCE One - CClass (18)    Power 62.5    Fuel Use 10%    Signature 62.5    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 36.0 billion km   (370 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes
While slower than Bartholomay Research's XploreR by half, the Atlas can load its cargo in a quick 5.5 hours thanks to Maria Pelland's cargo handling technology.
When asked for comment, Thad Bartholomay said only, "At least they used BR engines."

January 7, 2031
Numbers Leno is turning out to be quite a talented man!

He is currently working on a ship to ship tractor beam project sponsored by Haan Industries.

January 22, 2031
The Xplore One has completed its overhaul. Commander Chaoticag remains captain of the ship. He will return to the depths of space to continue surveying asteroids for trans-newtonian element deposits.

June 17, 2031
Famed scientist Maria Pelland, founder of Pelland Research has fallen ill.

July 31, 2031
The first Atlas has finished construction. Shortly before its completion, Governor Mcbroom designated a fifth of earth's industrial base to begin converting mines to automated mines. Once the first automated mine is completed, the Atlas will be tasked with carrying it to the asteroid designated Asteroid #14, located in the inner belt. 14 has highly accessible deposits of Boronide, Corundium, Uridium, Vendarite, and Mercassium.

July 17, 2031
Commander Chaoticag, while on mission near Asteroid #80, is promoted to the rank of Captain.

January 21, 2032
Earth has been relatively quite the past several months. Industrial output and research progress has only increased, but no major 'breakthroughs' occurred. That is a scary thought for Governor Mcbroom, for it is now an election year. She needs excitement to bolster her support. Numbers Leno just developed the new Liberator Advanced RailGun, an impressive weapon system but not something to make the population of earth go 'oooooh!'. In fact, the attention put towards a weapon may detract from Mcbroom's image- the people might be disappointed she has not been influencing research to further develop space exploration. The problem is, with a growing presence in space (sure, two ships is not much, but that number will likely grow quickly; a second Atlas is 67.8% complete) there is a need for a military presence to ensure peace and control.
LENO Liberator - 10cm ARG
Code: [Select]
Damage Per Shot (4): 1     Rate of Fire: 5 seconds     Range Modifier: 3
Max Range 30,000 km     Railgun Size: 3 HS    Railgun HTK: 1
Power Requirement: 3    Power Recharge per 5 Secs: 3
Cost: 15    Crew: 30
Materials Required: 3x Duranium  3x Boronide  9x Neutronium

So while Mcbroom does her best to not draw too much attention to Leno's recent railgun design, she puts focus on his next project, a sorium harvester. Saturn has over two million tons of sorium just waiting to be collected. Mcbroom hopes that development of a sorium harvesting ship will reinvigorate the people's faith in her ability to lead earth into deep space.

April 21, 2032
A Palomo Group spokesman stirred a small crowd of reporters into an excited frenzy during an announcement that the second Atlas cargo ship had finished construction. Financial analysts expect Palomo Group stock to remain strong considering the income and licensing being generated from the government ship construction contracts. Finally, Palomo Shipworks is really starting to bring in money. Most analysts don't expect the project to actually turn a profit for a few years, but it is well on its way.

In other news, Governor Mcbroom revealed a brand new naval shipyard to the public. Named Unity Two, the shipyard is purpose built for a new, small patrol-type craft being developed by Haan Industries. Mcbroom says the vessel will not be ready for construction for several months, though. So in the meantime Unity Two will begin expanding by adding a second slipway.

June 26, 2032
New opponents to Governor Mcbroom are starting to make waves in early polls.
Winford Hewlin, a patient young A4 administrator is popular for his 'focus on technology' approach to expansion. He hopes to see earth stop spending resources on experimental new ships and designs while developing new advanced technologies to optimize progress. He is well qualified and skilled in many fields.

Elsie Perego is another A4 administrator with excellent skills and connections. With a major interest in shipbuilding, she hopes to see earth utilize all of its shipyards and start really taking advantage of the opportunities of space. One of her strongest points is that she would immediately OK the Bartholomay Research Xplore mod 1 for production and use.

Gregoria Lush, a previous contender for the highest elected office is in the running this time around, but her support base is much smaller than four years ago.

August 22, 2032

God Dammit. The absolute last thing I need is another biology expert. And only 10% at that. This is getting ridiculous. I NEED power and propulsion, Logistics, construction... not biology. Heck, I'd take a FIFTH missile specialist over a biology specialist... But nooo... Ugh.

August 27, 2032
As if getting a crappy scientist was bad enough...

Famed researcher Maria Pelland has died. She was an important asset for mankind and will be sorely missed. Governor Mcbroom attended her memorial personally, expressing sympathy for the Pelland family. Pelland Research, the company responsible for cargo handling improvement technology and the DirecPoint missile guidance systems among other work, will continue to operate as an independent firm under the leadership of the former Vice President of Operations.
Prominent business analysts see Maria's passing as an, excuse the pun, deathblow to Pelland Research, though. Without her genius mind behind their work, the company will likely only manage to survive off of licensing fees from previous developments. And if rumors are correct, Haan Industries is hard at work developing a new missile targeting system to fulfill Governor Mcbroom's call for a small, fast military patrol vessel. Many analysts call for short sales of Pelland Research stock in the immediate future, but also warnt hat another firm, such as Haan Industries or Bartholomay Research, may acquire Pelland which could stabilize or even boost the company's value.

...oops.
Captain Chaoticag seems to have run the Xplore One out of fuel.
He was on his way back to earth from the outer asteroid belt but did not make it. His decision to return at 30% fuel apparently was not conservative enough. Lessons learned.
The Atlas 002, captained by Lieutenant Commander Julia Kett is being dispatched to give Captain Chaoticag some gas.

October 21, 2032
After ten days stranded in space, Xplore One was met by Atlas 002 and provided with a full tank of gas. The first ever deep space fuel transfer, Lieutenant Commander Julia Kett is awarded the Deep Space Operation medal.
Captain Chaoticag finds himself awarded the Lost In Space Badge.

Governor Mcbroom has grounded all future space flights until a comprehensive study on fuel usage and range endurance can be completed.

Nice job, so far, I love the focus on domestic and political matters.  Can't wait for the space military to get set up, though.  Can I claim Thad Bartolomey?

OFF TOPIC:

Btw, read through a lot of of your CK lp, very nice, you've got a flair for making even the most inane event funny and entertaining.

You can be Thad, yes. Want to change name or keep it?
I'll give some details of what exactly you are up to later.
But off the top of my head: you are a well known, wealthy biology/genetics researcher. But you are not afraid to start into other fields as needed or desired, especially considering the utter lack of other qualified scientists. You run Bartholomay Research (which can be called something else if you wish), it is not an actual entity in game but rather the story-telling embodiment of your work. BR has vast resources and easy access to government contracts and support, at the moment. Governor Mcbroom has a chilly relationship with ou at best, but is willing to aid your work in order to help make herself look good.

Done. After going through personal experiences, none being any business to the public, Thad Bartholomay is now known as Nix. His reputation remains intact, despite the word Scientology having been thrown around.
His firm, Bartholomay Research will continue to use its legacy name for some purposes, but has otherwise officially re-branded itself as Nix Labs (or, do you prefer something else?)

Currently Nix is researching Active Grav Sensor Strength 16. Since it is not in his field of expertise only his natural 35% bonus is going into it. Internal company estimates put a completion date at August 28 of next year. Nix's skills allow for up to 35 labs under his control, but currently only has 15 allocated to him.

EDIT, also, who does Nix support for governor? it is an election year with elections coming up soon.

December 26, 2032
With elections for governor dominating most of the news, an unrelated story is a welcome change. Numbers Leno has just been put on the board of directors of Pelland Research and appointed President of the company. SEC filings are expected to show Leno holds a controlling stake in the company, but at the moment its all really just speculation. But, speculation or not, the news has wreaked havoc on the financial markets. Pelland Research is now trading higher than before founder Maria Pelland's death four months prior.
I hope you didn't enter any short sale contracts... you may now be broke.

January 1, 2033
Elections results are in.
Two term governor Elissa Mcbroom has been... ... ... ... defeated by administrator Elsie Perego.

The change in leadership is both exciting and destabilizing. Many politicians, industrial leaders, and military personnel are unsure what the new leader will do to the status quo.
Elsie Perego's intense shipbuilding pro exploration rhetoric helped to get her elected, now it is time to see how she follows through.

January 16, 2033
Governor Perego has lifted the ban on deep space travel.
Perego not only gives her blessings for Captain Chaoticag to resume surveying asteroids but personally meets with to send him on his way.
She also resumes shipments of automated mines to Asteroid #14.

February 21, 2033
Design specs for a new space vessel were leaked to the public. Immediately following the leak, in order to reign in control of the situation, Governor Perego and Numbers Leno announced the Pelland Research Enforcer. A fast attack close patrol vessel, the Enforcer is designed to protect current and future shipping lanes.
Code: [Select]

PR Enforcer class Fast Attack Craft    850 tons     93 Crew     108 BP      TCS 17  TH 50  EM 0

PELLAND - DirecPoint X2 (1)     GPS 240     Range 3.2m km    Resolution 20

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes
With a maximum endurance  of 41 days at full power (equating just over 10 and a half billion kilometers), the Enforcer is the ideal tool to protect government and civilian interests in the inner asteroid belt.
The Enforcer is equipped with some of the most advanced technological components to date. Built around the Haan Industries Nuclear Thermal Engine Technology Micro Buzzer, a high power mil spec licensed modification to the NTET FORCE One by Bartholomay Research (Nix Labs), the Enforce is capable of speeds up to 2941km/s, the fastest ship ever.
Armed with the LENO Liberator (now owned by Pelland Research due to Numbers Leno joining the company) it utilizes new Leno researched Pelland built DirecPoint sensors. The XenoCore One pebble bed reactor provides power to the ship.
Governor Perego has indicated the government will be ordering two Enforcers from Pelland Research with an option to buy two more. The Unity Two shipyard will handle construction utilizing both of its 1000t slipways.

April 17, 2033
A big day for major announcements, Haan Industries came out on top over Nix Labs' announced completion of research into higher strength active sensor technology.
Scotty Haan personally revealed not only a new spaceship built 5 days prior, classed the Haan Industries Strongman, but also a state of the art newly constructed orbital asteroid mining platform, the Haan Industries New Horizon.

Originally expected to be a forerunner in former Governor Mcbroom's quest for a practical asteroid mining design (especially considering Haan Industries invented the asteroid mining module in August 2030), Haan was surpassed by the Palomo Group with the construction of the Atlas which is capable of taking mines to the asteroids.
Late to the fight, Haan Industries has finally rolled out its answer to the asteroid mining quest. According to Haan, a single Strongman can tow any number of New Horizon space stations (each equivalent to about ten automated mines) to asteroids where they can not only operate the asteroid mining modules but also provide a a platform for 50,000 workers, tourists, scientists- anything!
The design is also very cleverly made to utilize Haan Industries factories on the earth, rather than the Palomo Group Palomo Shipworks or the Wessel Space Project shipyard.

May 5, 2033
The Strongman has arrived at its destination with the first New Horizon in tow. Asteroid #2 will be the home of the New Horizon and her crew for the next several year at least.

Asteroid #2 has ample TN element deposits- accessible too.

May 16, 2033
A new firm, Transue Performance, has opened shop. Founded by a young scientist named Santos Tansue, the firm specializes in Logistics and Ground Combat consulting and research.
Governor Perego has already put Transue Performance on retainer for full government work. In fact, Perego has pulled funding from another researcher in order to designate resources and an active project to Transue.

June 21, 2033

yay, Scientists are getting trained, finally... Now we just need some power/propulsion, construction and sensors experts!

July 8, 2033
A second New Horizon asteroid mining space station has been built on Earth. The Strongman will take it to Asteroid #2 to join the first one.
Haan Industries currently has no way to ship any mined elements from Asteroid #2 to earth. Scotty Haan is forced to lease a Palomo Group Atlas to ship a mass driver from earth to the asteroid. Once the mass driver is in place it will eliminate the need for Haan Industries to rely on other companies to execute normal operations. Now all they need is their own commercial shipyard... At present they are forced to build on the Wessel Space Project or Palomo Shipworks yards.

July 13, 2033
The first two Enforcers have rolled off the slipways of Unity Two. Governor Perego has executed her right to order two new Enforcers from Pelland Research and construction is to start immediately.
The vessels have been assigned crew and captains and are to begin training exercises immediately.

November 1, 2033
The old NASA - Houston shipyard just finished work on adding a second slipway. With the shipyard ready to take on a new project Governor Perego is finally coming through with election campaign promises to expand exploratory ship building. NASA - Houston is being retooled for the Xplore mod 1. Work should finish in May of '34. It will likely be well over a year yet before a ship is actually built, though.
But considering the extreme waste of fuel the Xplore One burns through just to refuel every couple of months the mod 1 should be a great improvement.

But even considering the massive interest and anticipation expected for the governor's announcement, the news was overshadowed by another press release...
A young scientist named James Mcbay, just out of Earth University, is make some very big waves in the academic community. Mcbay has presented a theory regarding inter-galactic travel, of sorts. He calls it Jump Point Theory. Many prominent scientists refuse to acknowledge any validity in his early work, claiming him to be a crackpot, but Scotty Haan of Haan industries did grant him some time to try and prove his case. But when Haan was unconvinced and declined to offer facilities or funding, Mcbay could not even get a meeting with Numbers Leno at Pelland Research. Leno was worried that Mcbay was actually a spy sent from Haan Industries to try and get insider knowledge of Pelland's newest research. When all seemed hopeless for the young Mcbay his luck finally turned. The imaginative Nix decided to bring him in and grant him a small stipend to work with.

In other completely less interesting news, Haan Industries has finished work on thermal sensor technology, hoping to compete with Pelland Research's firm market grip on sensors. Haan Industries is currently working on a project to bring EM sensor technology into a practical design with plans to do the same with a thermal sensor using their newest thermal research as a base.

December 6, 2033
Busy Week!

The mineral find is pretty insignificant. At this point Chaoticag has been making hits pretty frequently now, int he outer asteroid belt- with many better than this Asteroid #186.
Unity Two's third slipway is more newsworthy, especially considering it just rolled two new Enforcers off its existing slipways. Unity Two is now capable of building three simultaneous Enforcers, or three other ships up to 1000t if retooled.
The two new enforcers will take on captains and crew before heading into deep space for training.
Haan Industries has finished practical design of a new Thermal sensor, the Haan Industries HOTBOX X1. It joins their already developed EM sensor, the Haan Industries EMS X1, as an alternative to the Pelland Research DirecPoint series of active sensors.
But recent field testing by independent groups have indicated that EM and thermal sensors are not effective with existing targeting technology, and likely never will be. That means that Pelland's DirecPoint X1 and X2 are the only sensors capable to work in conjunction with their DirectPoint BFC or DirecPoint MFC fire controls.

December 28, 2033
Transue Performance has just completed work on a troop transport bay design. Earth now has the capability to move ground units to other planetary bodies. Governor Perego has renewed Transue Performance's contract to now develop new and improve ground units.

So I'm guessing civilians basically do legwork that you don't want to do, such as dealing with gathering materials from far off asteroids for you?

Well.... yes and no.
Technically civilians are companies started completely out of your control.
We do have one in game, Palomo Group, but it has done nothing yet. THat is likely because I have no decent off world colonies. It is possible for the company to build a commercial classed ship on its own with no input form me. It will then operate that ship on its own with no input form me. I can issue pickup/drop off requests, which they will complete, though.
Now the 'civilians' in my game so far are ultimately 100% under my control. They are technically still government assets. I designate to build the ships, I designate where, when, why they go places (something I cannot do with true civilian shipping lines or civilian mining colonies). I am just treating government built commercial assets as 'civilian'.
So to go deeper, I am designating exactly how many labs each scientist gets. I designate what they research, I allocate shipyards to projects and I assign construction projects. They are technically 100% under government control, but for fun I am playing as though they are independent firms acting with self-serving interests.

Thanks, Goron, Nix Labs is great.  I'm glad I got to hire James Mcbay.  I see much potential, within him...
Yeah. As do I.
We REALLY need power/propulsion experts.
You'll see though, Nix's choice to bring Mcbay on the Nix Labs team will bring currently unfathomable fame to you. Especially because Nix will ultimately finish the Jump Point Theory research.  Mcbay can only handle 5 research labs. Nix can handle 35. So even though Mcbay gets an effective 60% bonus to his research in Jump Point Theory (15% base * 4 for being in same field), Nix's 35% base bonus across 35 labs is much more effective (35% base * 1 for being outside of specialty).
So while it is Mcbay (actually, to be honest it is another power/propulsion researcher with a 10% base bonus across 10 labs right now, but I'm pretending  she is an extension of Mcbay, since she came into existence like 5 days after Mcbay did and I made that big write up on him) doing the research right now, you will take over the project soon once you see the true potential of his work. Assuming that is OK with you... heck, if you said: "throw him out onto the street!" then that is what will happen... but... I advise against that

So...you're saying that if I keep Mcbay on the team, then Nix will take all the credit?
