It'd take month to whip up a correct scout design. Months more to produce it.

I'll let the decision up to chaoticag. Do you want another design?

The Haan-Newgate Spaceworks shipyard has increased its hull capacity to 20,000 tons. Despite recent rumors of the 'A' word, and a massive government shift from civil to defense spending, Haan Industries will put two Mayflower hulls down.
Haan Industries is also beginning work on a new high yield nuclear weapon system
HI - HYNWS MkII
Code: [Select]

Maximum Missile Size: 4     Rate of Fire: 40 seconds
Launcher Size: 4 HS    Launcher HTK: 2
Cost Per Launcher: 24    Crew Per Launcher: 40
Materials Required: 6x Duranium  18x Tritanium

Development Cost for Project: 240RP
It is a ship based, improved, smaller version of their initial design present in the Fortitude bases on earth.

I'm afraid HYNWS won't do. We need to think of the PR side of things as well. Call it the Belthronding, from the strong yew bow of Beleg, in Tolkien.

Also, should chaoticag require it, we're ready to put all the ressources he might require to design a scout ship.

August 7, 2037
Haan Industries has announced completion of the Belthronding missile launcher design.
Nix Labs' final Eden has also finished construction on earth. It will be towed to Mars.
Governor Perego has instructed earth industry to begin work on a new naval shipyard.
In addition, Haan Industries will begin manufacturing ordnance factories. While Scotty Sheb Haan himself has indicated he'd like to see a new scout ship design in space, the cards are against him. Fleet Command is refusing to send any personnel in potential harms way without proper sensor systems; and as it stands now, no sensor is sufficient. Rumor has it that Pelland Research is working on a new DirecPoint active sensor, though.

Fleet Command had lifted the knee-jerk lock down on Earthworm exploration after some level of discussion took place. Both Commander Shades and Captain Chaoticag were sent to probe the last two unexplored jump points in the Sol system.
Shades was the first to reach his designated jump point. He has discovered the Alpha Centauri system.

Looks like we have plenty of colony options now, or at least some low colony cost places.
We should probably send some low profile ships in to see if those wrecks are recent or old, for all we know it could be a long dead civilisation.
Do we have any low profile ships?

You won't have 'low profile' until you've reached midgame cloaking and thermal output reduction, so for now the only option would be to send a ship in at very low speed and hope for the best. Of course, without decent passive sensors, you'll need to get so close that you'll be detected anyway. At this point, it may be a better option to use a fast, disposable FAC that consists of little more than an engine, fuel, and the largest R-16 active sensor you can cram into a 1k ton hull.

Mm.  Send in a fast attack craft with just enough fuel to get in, do the scans and get out again.  We'll get seen, but we hopefully won't get hit.

And have it piloted by someone disposable such as, say, Lt Commander Don Knopp.  ;P  IC rationale for volunteering for potential suicide mission: Captain Chaoticag is too well known and too popular for it to be a politically sound decision to send him.  If he doesn't come back, there will be a public backlash against sending one of the world's best loved explorers to his death.  But if you send someone fully qualified yet ultimately disposable who is willing to take the risk... if the worst comes to the worst you can hold a public funeral and it will be forgotten in a month's time.

That actually makes A LOT of sense...

And, I think a FAC is the way to go. I need to see how much sensor I can fit in one while maintaining a happy speed. An earthworm can jump it AND refuel it on location, then it can just fly the last couple hundred million kilometers on its own. Right now our npe engines just don't give enough power in the 'regular' size... But the FAC engine can get us in and out in a clip. Also, we have a designated FAC yard with four slips.

Yes... And no.
You, Nix, were running full capacity research into terraforming rate improvement... But you just lost all but one lab during the government shift of research/build priority. Your terraforming tech will sit on back burner until a couple of other things get done, probably as much as a year's time.
You may even drop all work on the tech, and put some effort into sensor or energy weapon technology...

So, essentially, you really need good sensors and lazors that you're willing to go all Socialist on me and use the labs?

Because that would be hilarious if you could implement that storywise.

If you don't seize the labs for the government, what could Nix Labs work on?

Forgive me if I misinterpreted everything.

I'm saying YOU could do sensors and or laser research:-)
Your high capacity and 35%raw bonus could go to use in those fields since we have no sensor or energy weapons specialists.
