Dwarves with Major Injuries
« on: January 30, 2012, 10:25:55 am »

So your legendary axedwarf came home victorious from battle... leaving his arms on the battlefield. Or your stupid miner dropped someone two z-levels and broke his back. Result: permanently disabled dwarf.

The usual option, of course, is to immolate them in magma; but I'm looking for alternatives. I thought of this first when I assigned a paraplegic dwarf to be the broker, stuck him in a burrow with the depot, and it worked very well.

So these disabled dorfs have got to have some use. Just throwing them in the magma seems wasteful, somehow. And I know that it's possible to weaponize things like blindness.

Anybody done the research on what a disabled dwarf can do, and what he can't do? Of course, it depends on the injury.

For clarification here, I'm talking about permanent injuries here--you know, missing arms and legs, broken spines, nerve damage.

I have some experience with this.  Meet Eral Larurdim, the unluckiest dwarf in existence.

But yeah, paraplegic dwarves make great nobles.

If he's a decent fighter, I'll make him a militia captain of a training squad.

Which raises the logical question of how a soldier with no arms can show someone how to use an axe...

I assign them to tasks where speed is not critical, but that they can still do. For example, my ex-mechanic who got his spine broken so long ago I can't remember how, and spent forever holed up in a hospital bed until crutches were fixed, now whiles away his days crawling around his own personal kitchen, making *dwarf syrup biscuits* and telling stories to the young'uns.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Blindness in Dwarves =

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Except with more alcohol, battle axes and of course rage. Do I need to go into specifics? :p
