I wonder what, exactly, makes people so attached to vulgar words? It is so unbecoming when someone uses them self-assertively, to provide an ego-boost, or to describe mundane or trivial things where there are no justifications for them. I am not saying that these words in themselves are that terrible, but it is a pet peeve of mine when every third word or so muttered by a person have to be 'fuck', 'shit', etc.
From what I've seen it makes them feel more important, I guess it's because they get more attention?

I think it's the rebellious nature of kids, you know, there was that one kid in your generation that started swearing before all of you, he broke the rules, he was probably cool and badass even though none of the kids wanted to admit it (or did) because he was breaking the rules and giving a middle finger to the "man".
Then you start doing it and you feel cool too because you're a rebel and therefore cool, then it turns into a habit really and you don't notice it much until  someone points it out.

Dammit people celebrate with more swearing and less intelligent debate.

It was awesome when swedish news used finnish swear instead of swedish one. Finnish is such a great langue for swearing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hehe... Unfortunately, "perkele" is pretty much adopted into the Swedish language... As a joke curse word ;)

Yeah, I think that too. I feel that we as a society should be more lax on swearing, that will make kids swear less. Honestly though, I think swear words can be good if used properly to emphasize a point greatly, rather than dropping it every 3 words or freaking out over it.

While I agree with this, I'd just like to say that I really admire someone who can work great depth of meaning into a sentence almost entirely composed of the 7 6 words you can't say on (daytime) television.

Well, yeah. Swear words can be good if it has a profound meaning. Unfortunately people tend to abuse it every 3 words without adding a single bit of depth to the sentence and just generally annoying the hell out of everyone.

A Precision F-Strike does have more impact if you don't swear every sentence anyway. But I consider it fine to swear if you, for example, stubb your tow (since that damn well hurts!)...also I don't consider "damn" or "bloody" to be swear words since they are so bloody-damn tame xD

Appropriate reason to swear: just cut own thumb open with a knife, bleeding all over counter, floor, vegetables.

Inappropriate reason to swear: just forgot to check facebook over your lunch break.

And other things generally in line with that.
What say you, B12?

What say you, B12?
I say transition into languages uncommonly spoken in your area if you're going to swear related to the latter bit. It's what I (poorly, because I don't actually know how to pronounce it) do :P

Random gibberish works pretty well too, actually. It's more about intonation than meaning in that case, though.

Slipping into turns of phrase that's not that bad in your local dialect but considerably more vulgar in others works nicely, too. Some of the softer British stuff (Bloody, bugger, etc) works very well if you're in th'USA, heh.

"perkele" is serious business! Its not something to joke about! Damn swedes! *Shakes fist in the general direction of Sweden*  >:(   ;)

Well it certainly gives bad impression if someone swears because of triviliaties. I value ability of keeping one's cool.

I have a policy of gradient swears. At the bottom of my swear vocabulary you have "crud" which has been phased out in favour of "crap", because honestly, why have an imitation when you can have the real thing?
Crap, and crud, get used when something mildly bad has just happened.
Shit, and fuck, get used something very bad has happened.
When I'm rolling on the floor in pain... well there's actually very little swearing because I'm focusing on managing the pain, but I might have the presence of mind to give a shit or a fuck.

"Shove It" is my toned down form of "Fuck You". I don't actually say the big FY, because if I'm really angry at someone I don't say anything at all. But sometimes I want to be playfully angry at someone, so I say "Shove It", because "Fuck You" is a little too vicious for my tastes.
Although mind you, "Shove It" seems to have gone out of style with me in favour of "You Bastard".

Of course, all this depends on whatever the fuck I feel like.

I just spent a while trying to remember if Dutch has any good swears.

If I remember correctly, adding the word "kanker" or something like "tuber" to a Dutch swear word makes it x3 as offensive.

The word 'Kankerslet' (slut, with cancer) is the only one I remember though.

...I don't swear at all. The reason I censor any curses I type (and I never actually fully type them) is because I've made a vow to myself not to curse.

I actually swear more often in real life than I do on the internet, and I have no problems with that

Though I have been throwing fictional profanity in there for fun
