This may be in poor taste...
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:55:35 pm »

But I noticed in one of the threads about protesting a censorship bill, someone was censoring their own curses.

As such I am putting up an anti-self censorship protest thread. Express your freedom to be foul mouthed as you damn well please while you still can bitches!

I expect this thread to get closed for being tasteless and crude. But we'll fucking deserve it.

You know, they might have been doing it as a protest statement. Just saying.

Besides, swearing has never been an offense on Bay 12. Sometimes really visceral stuff gets deleted, but that's far more the exception than the rule.

Speaking of language, my father regularly says only stupid people people swear on a regular basis.

I'm pretty foul mouthed myself, but I follow the rule that descriptive swearing is fine, and offensive swearing is never called for, and debases the person using it.

There is a difference between censorship by government bodies to control the flow of thought, and self censorship in the name of not being offensive. Choice is one major factor, another is that the same content comes through, just in a more savoury tone.

Although the big issue with self-censorship is that if it can be coerced into being it ends up being a lot harder to get rid of than legally enforced censorship. (Ex: ESRB, MPAA, ect...)

You know, movie theaters don't actually have a legal requirement to turn away minors from R-Rated movies. They just do because otherwise the MPAA will wreck their shit. (If they hear about it.)

Hence my point. Self-censorship gets stuck in people's thoughts rather than the law, and so drumming up support against it is harder because it basically asks people to stop oppressing themselves.
