Awesome, a good old-fashioned double bit axe.
For authenticity you need one edge on a fairly blunt angle and one more acute..
i mean, if what you want is to simulate a medieval lumberjack trying to hack someone in chainmail.
The sharpness or angle might make a difference, i dunno..

Carrying a woodman's axe into battle will not end well, and is not really an authentic representation.

This would be more like it. As we can see, it's actually a thin and light blade. It's got only one edge. We have acute corners on the blade to pierce.

I would make one, but I would have no one to sell it to. The caravan seems to miss my house every year.

It's rather appropriate that someone would post a bearded axe on this forum. :P

I personally have never worn chainmail. Lacquered bamboo armor (Kendo) was pretty heavy until I got used to it, though, so I couldn't imagine just how freaking heavy a chain hauberk would be.

I seem to recall a chain hauberk weighing on the order of 20 pounds, but that probably varies a lot on the weave, wire guage, and things like that.  That might be a bit heavy though, I've heard an entire suit of steel plate armor could be as little as 45 pounds.

The haubrek I made is around twelve pounds. Not too heavy, but it would depend on your STR stat.

Nah, that mostly depends on your CON.

Chainmail is heavy, but if it's done properly (hanging in the right direction) then it will naturally constrict itself as it hangs, allowing it to hug your body, and that will do a lot to actually distribute the weight.  It's not a 20 pound backpack, it's more like a thick trench coat.  Different weight distribution allows for easier wearing.

A deadweight hauberk held in your hand will be heavy, but when worn it's not so bad.

Thankfully, my STR and CON both are much higher now than when I was a 100-lb waif.

That's something I've always wondered about chain armor actually.  Plate armor too.  A few months ago when I got into the idea of trying to make some steel plate armor, I spent forever trying to learn how the pieces strap together, how weight was distributed, how it was padded... things like that.

That stuff is infuriatingly hard to find.  I worry I may have to learn it the hard way.  Of course, I got out of the hobby pretty soon, but I intend to get back into it.  I think I'm going to make some more chain mail stuff first though.  It's a little less demanding on the tools.  Largest piece I made was maybe a 9 square inch sheet of butted chain using old corroded electric fence wire.  :D

Time to get some real materials!  And to weld / solder it together this time.  Rivetting is just way too much work.

If I was to make some armor, I'd go with something like brigandine or or a coat-of-plates.

I'd make boiled leather or canvas or both, formed into a something like a jacket and have steel plates sewed into it in strategic areas. It'd be simple and inexpensive and more realistic, since thats really what most mass produced armor was like back then and what most middle ages line soldiers and men-at-arms wore, hence 'brigandine'.

But everyone wants a full suit of gleaming steel armor!  Who wants to be one of the faceless masses?

Well, actually I'm sure plenty of people would and that's probably a much better place to start with plate armor than with no experience, some sheet metal and a few random tools you scrape together.
