So in a GLBT message board, someone was talking about the "Womyn" movement, "If the measure of social development is based on how many 'y's you can use to spell woman, then something is surely wrong."  Similarly, a ren faire renactor said "It's chainmail.  Certainly you can go overly ye-olde and spelle it with two L's and an E, but, well, congratulations to you."

This is interesting stuff.  How much of the mail will be destroyed?  Would it be possible to replace the damaged rings and still have a decent piece of armor?  I have always wanted to do something similar with my body armor but can't replace any damaged section cheaply.  Here are my thoughts for testing armor though:
1)  Stand shouldn't be too solid or fixed.  Some give or swing would be good.
2)  Before & after shots of the armor.  Vid of the swing would be great too!
3)  Before & after close-up shots of the weapon head & edge.

For the stand, maybe a rotting log on the ground or something very heavy that is suspended?  This is kind of what i was thinking:

The closest thing i have to a DF weapon is this:

Would you be testing different weaves & materials?  Or something specific?

I can get pictures of the weapon tomorrow.  I might be able to suspend a cinder block from my treehouse to use as a hanging weight, probably wouldn't be too hard.  And yes, damaged rings can be replaced with some ease.  Especially armor-sized rings (compared to jewelry-sized smaller rings) it can be fairly easy to pluck out and replace rings.  AR of 5-ish and it's possible, 3-ish for my jewelry rings and it's a pain.  But yes, in that regard chainmail repairs extremely well.

I could test as many weaves as I could afford, really, which seems to be none since no one is volunteering funding while everyone is volunteering interest.

I'll volunteer my swordarm. And my swords. If you send me a sample, I have some katanas that I could test your stuff on.

Sounds great!

For support, do the forum rules allow you to toss up a paypal donate link?  Or perhaps you could crowdsource some of the materials?  Pliers, wire, rings, camera, iron claymore w/ menacing spikes of lamb bone, or whatever.  Lowering the bar for support could get more involvement.  Your tests could also become a selling point for your wares.  More exposure is good!

OT: if i had the money, i would buy a few miles of nearby forested hills and pay for airfare for any bay12'ers to Strike the Earth.  Haven't posted in months and excited for the upcoming release.

Appears to be nothing against paypal links in the rules, and it's not like I've hidden my money-mongering ways before.

Unfortunately posting a button is too complicated for me right now, so you can paypal to girlinhat42@yahoo.com and include a message.  Aim is $40 for materials and shipping, 16g 1/4" stainless machine-cut from the ring lord

Hmmmm. Maybe we should create a separate topic for Bay 12: The Fort.

Google "Dwarfcon" shows me this and this, but I think she was probably talking about this.

I would do it.
