Changing squads = equipment disappears?

I just moved a couple of fully armored and equipped dwarfs to a different squad, and they now have nothing equipped.  I figured they would strip off their old equipment and put it on again (same uniform), but this doesn't seem to have happened. Any idea what's up?

They might have stored it in their chest like an owned item. They may also have taken it to the stockpile after removing it.

Does the other squad have a uniform assigned?

Yeah. the other squad has exactly the same uniform. Is there some way the armor could be marked as "owned" or somesuch?

Armor generally doesn't get owned. Try reassigning the armor to the squad.
