A screenshot is worth a thousand words, right?
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:18:05 pm »

It's commonly said that a picture is worth a thousand words.  Therefore, I propose an experiment:
Given the following picture, what wild assumptions can you make about my fortress?

You have a much larger population than what I prefer to work with. How many are idle?

You stop worldgen at the year 250 and (aside from marksdwarves) don't generally rely on military for serious defense.

You're building a megaproject but neglecting melee weaponry, instead focusing on a marksdwarf fort. The fort is ~8 years in. There's a thriving meat industry, which is also a major export.

Bwahaha, this is already pretty great.  I'm not sure if I want to answer any of these, because I'm interested in what you guys can come up with.

Hmm....

You have a small militia so presumably run on traps or walling-off as a defence; given the (relatively) low wealth for weaponry I'd guess cage traps.

Huge discrepancy between imported and exported wealth suggests limited trade, possibly a thriving industry in trading bolts or water for goods.

Large number of animals and 'other' foodstuffs... possible poultry industry (eggs), although it could also be indicative of high agriculture (quarry bushes), or a small fishing operation which has built up. Poultry is the most likely I'd think. Hunting also seems a favoured pastime, with 12 'rangers' (which may include stray Animal Caretaker etc. migrants who haven't been used yet) and a large meat supply - may also give a reason for the marksdwarf-focused militia.

Large seed numbers suggest healthy farming industry coupled with the above-mentioned trading (those sacks of elven seeds add up fast).

12 miners vs 6 stoneworkers suggests preference for carved dwellings rather than hand-built architecture.

Also likely that there's a large number of idlers (3x peasants, large number of farmers probably means that a fair number are 'unused' excess Lye Makers and the like, and they've popped out 36 children so far), although this is fairly normal once population starts getting higher and the 'skilled workers' have settled into their job roles.

You don't have an efficient brewery or kitchen system set up, since you have a ton of meat and plants lying around that really should be processed into Lavish Meals (for trade or keeping your dorfs happy) and booze.  Your foods/drinks ratio is skewed pretty heavily towards foods, so you are probably making easy meals.

You rely on hunting for the meat.

You've got no military to speak of, although you have enough wealth that you have probably trapped/killed a siege or two and have goblinite making up some of that wealth.

You have a bunch of useless peasants standing around, popping out babies.

I'm gonna agree with worldgen stopped at 250 and your fort is 8 years old based on the population you've got.

You at least have a chief medical dwarf and a mayor/noble of some sort, since the Health and Justice menu items are there.

This is a pretty cool idea.  Like House-meets-CSI if they were all surly, drunken midgets.  I approve and I wanna play next round!

You have a ridiculously efficient gigantic farming system, lots of gold or other precious metals that has been processed into masterwork form, the fortress is most likely either cutoff from the outside world or was initially to train the military to its highest potential, or you have a  massive red carpet to greet the gobbos. A large population of turkeys is also a distinct probability.

You capped your population at 150 but your dwarves churned out a bunch of children and you got some rather larger than average migrant waves. Combining this with an unchecked kitten explosion you are now hovering at the edge of fps death. You have too many farmers, and dealing with the wasted food has become a problem.
Fps won't kill this fortress because your about to pull "the Lever" which involves miles and miles of tunnels (indicated by your 12 miners) and maybe a floodgate or two (6 engineers).

Im guessing your hiding every bit of food, along with every piece of clothing, craft, armor, ect; your dwarves have, including beds. You have a high amount of wealth and over half your population sits around doing nothing besides farm or eat food/Drink. your entire fort is outdoor based on a 3x3 embark and youve survived in a mirthful area, killing random goblins that walk by your fort every now and then. Farming is your entire base of food and you only trade with the caravan for cloth and wood, along with random ass flutes and piccolos. Also, that random Wrestler is your militia commander, the most bad-ass, unarmed(As in he has no arms) Fighter you have.
