Short update from my blog! Still working hard on the game, will try and get some more video footage up in a while.

When I started working on the enemies I had a clear goal in mind. They shouldn't just spawn randomly but be a part of the worlds eco-system. One problem I have with a lot of single-player games is that when you leave an area you know that nothing will continue happening there until you return. It's basically set on pause until you come back. I want this game to have a living world where things happen even if you're not around to see it. Some people say that it's unnecessary, why put time and effort into something the player will never experience. I think it's very necessary! IF the events that transpire actually have an impact on the world! Let's say that there's a big battle between two factions on the other side of the map. You might not know about it until you go there and find the remnants of the carnage, or you see fleeing (or deserting ;)) npcs moving your way. The winning faction might grow larger, spreading throughout the world and end up becoming your enemy, or maybe an ally! This is just one of many examples of what could happen of course, but you get the gist of it.

Now, if I'd try to simulate the whole world in a detailed manner in real-time the player's computer would probably implode. What I've decided to do instead is to run a high-level world simulation that's only updated once in awhile (and not all npcs at once). Once you reach a part of the map where one or more npcs are located they will spawn in their correct locations and their "regular" AI will take over.
