Working on a new game!
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:34:17 pm »

Hi!

We (Irate Games) are working on our second game (our first game was Evil Angry Planet, a TD game for the IOS) that has influences from Dwarf fortress, Minecraft, Dungeon Keeper and Populous. We've gotten alot of work done on it the last couple of months and the game is at such a stage that we can start showing some stuff :)
The gameplay will be a mix of a strategy game and life simulation where your directly and indirectly control a group of villagers on an island. The island can be expanded in all directions and your villagers will have needs that you have to fullfill to keep them happy....and alive :) We are currently working on the basic gameplay and hopefully we can soon make a longer presentation of the game.

There's some more info on our blog which we try to keep updated with our latest progress.
I hope you'll find it interesting.

A couple of videos below!

Terrain deformation

Animated character

Different block types

Update 12-02-10
Started work on creating larger land masses with biomes.

I think he might have been referring to you, and not the guy in the game.
Saying you're human as in not some bot advertising a game on random forums.

Are there really indie studios that use that despised marketing method?

Oooh! Now I get it! Oh I'm def. a human :D Atleast that's what my parents tell me...
I know it might look bad coming to a forum making the first post about a game we're working on, but I just thought this might be interesting to you guys (and I love DF) :)

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

This art style is what minecraft can have. I've heard reviewers give minecraft's graphics a 10 (yeah, can you believe it?) because "that's the game's style" and "it can't be made better without ruining it." Yeah right.

Anyway, this looks good. The concept sounds nice as well, I'd probably pay for it if it turns out to be a good game.
It also might be a "gateway" to dwarf fortress for some people, seeing as the general premise of both games is similar: control a group of people and survive.

I'm not in any way trying to insinuate that your game is a rip-off. But I think the concepts are related enough that people who enjoy your game might also try dwarf fortress when hearing about it. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Well, he listed DF as one of the influences, so it's probably not a bad thing that they're similar. :P

The game looks really nice! I especially like the way the water flows into the channel.

A couple of questions: what language/libraries do you use? How big is the team? Do you have plans for an early alpha, and if so, an estimated date?
