You find yourself stuck between simply killing the bird or trying to mount it for your personal edification. On a whim you opt for the latter decision, reasoning that you might be able to kill it afterward.
You sneak up to the ostral whilst it forages around, then leap onto its back at the last moment! It is only then that you realise you have not the slightest idea how to tame or even ride such a beast. You grab onto its feathers as it shrieks and wails, dancing around and flapping its wings in an effort to throw you off. You manage to keep hold in spite of the frenzied effort, desperately trying to force your will on the creature.
The bird seems angry and afraid, so very angry and afraid. But you know anger. You've known anger all your existence - and until now you never knew how it felt without it. But this summoning has given you a new perspective on that most basic fact of your existence - how to bring it, and how to take it away.
Focusing your spiritual reserves, you draw the anger out of the ostral until all that remains is its fear of you - leaving it still, unwilling to move and compliant to whatever commands you can manage to give it. Which mostly will be nudging it in one direction or another, frankly, since you cannot directly control a living creature with an intact mind. You could kill it and possess the corpse, but direct telepathy is not an ability your form of spirit possesses.
Will you:
a) Snap the fool bird's neck whilst its guard is down?
b) Hide the ostral away until you need it?
c) Ride it triumphantly into the fort, axe a-ready?
d) Something else?
