I have seen them in game, but only in one embark out of dozens.  They're not common.

They're very uncommon, with a FREQUENCY rating of 10. The standard is 50, so they're 20% as common as a creature that's supposed to show up some of the time but not all the time. More specifically, this means that there's a 10% chance any particular underground biome has a 10% chance of having any flesh balls at all on its 3rd level. If they're present in a particular L3UG biome, that just means that they can show up, not that they will with any frequency.

In short, while they're nice for training blunt weapons on, it's not really something that you should count on.

Flesh Balls and Crundles... the underground is a strangely anatomical place.

On-topic, yeah, they don't seem to be too common sadly. Too bad, from what i understand they're almost impossible to kill, so i could maybe chain them somewhere so they could act as meatshields for my military.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

I've done some research on flesh ball training in the past, and approximate training times for novice hammerdorfs with iron (low damage) hammers:

9000 frames to achieve legendary +1 fighter.
1500 frames to achieve legendary +1 wrestler.
42000 frames to achieve legendary +1 hammerdorf.

Other combat skilles leveled up past Adequate, but I didn't bother testing them at that point. During the 8 minutes that I tested that at 100fps, none of them died. In a really old test, though, I did have a single one die due to a skin tear from a scratch or something like that... but you can get a few good legendaries per ball if you take care of them. That's how I trained the military on one of my forts, and they whooped ass.

That's funny I had a fort several versions ago where I flesh balls rolling in every other season and terrifying my farmers.  I would have said they were very common; I guess I was just...lucky?

The raws essentially say that they don't come often, but when they come, they come en masse.

EDIT: Well, not really 'en masse', but due to their pesky nature, a standard group of four/five can be annoying.

If you want to rely on them I'd suggest some modding.

Crundles, flesh balls and...purring maggots you can milk for a 'white fluid'. Let's just rename them flesh tubes or ...oh wait. Helmet Snakes.

There's no way Toady did this by accident. I'm going to make a zoo exclusively for the innuendos he put in this game.

I occasionally see the phallus of whatever detached by combat lurking in my refuse stockpile. If a necromancer crops up and animates it...perhaps, the caverns have a necromantic effect on various FB's and cavern dwellers unmentionables. Crundles evolved from the detached spiked crundle of Atil the forgotten beast, detached by Urist McIntrepic.
