You should (though I haven't looked at this mod specifically) be able to paste the text files (from the automaton mod) alongside the other files in the raw -> objects folder. Did you make sure to put them in the root raw folder (as opposed to within any of the existing saves), and then generate a new world?
That is one of the things I did, yes. I manually moved each automaton txt file from the automatons folder into the raw -> objects folder alongside the other txt files, and generated a new world and embarked, there were no changes to the game.
My next idea at this point is to look closely at the automaton txt file names and the real objects txt file names, rename the automatons ones to take over what the real ones should be, and swap the files entirely. But that seems like a stupid amount of work to get someone else's mod to work, it -should- just work 'out of the box', so I'm not going to try that right away and wait for a response.
EDIT: Whoa. So, I re-tried copypasting the txt files from the automatons folder into the raw-->objects folder, -then- I made sure that all those files were arrianged and in order by name. NOW there have been some changes to the game. Let's see how it works!
EDIT EDIT: Okay, fun fact. Can't choose 'prepare for embark carefully', that gives you a dwarven embark. Must choose the 'play now' option to play as automatons.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: More weird things. I noticed that, as with your standard "Play Now!" embark, I have a fish cleaner automaton and a fisher automaton. For some reason.
None of the fishing jobs are showing up on the labor list. I can't turn them off. The fisher automaton goes to fish no matter what, and I can't stop him.
Furthermore, I genned a second world, and nevermind my earlier quip about not being automatons if you 'prepare carefully'--even using that, all embarks are as automatons. And here's another kicker; when picking the labor list for your starting seven exactly, again, all fishing related labors are nonexistent.
Was this intentional, or a bug? I know it would have been 'fixed' if I had initially embarked without the standard set, but it's still something that should probably be looked into.
