I've tried making the animal stockpile right around the perimeter of the depot, but no matter how hard i try, i cant sell these damn gnomes. Is this impossible? Goblins as well? Help!

You can't.  This is a bug.  If you designate a cage with a non-tame creature in it to be taken to the trade depot, the creature will be released from the cage.

A shame really....

I wanted to show the invading goblin macelord and his cadre of bumbling goons just what TRUE terror was by sending them off to the local elven "retreat", but I guess the game does have some small sense of morality.

So instead, I just built their cages on tiny 1x1 squares overhanging the outer perimeter of the fortress's walls (no path down. Walled off after construction) and leave them there as crow cages.

You would think the goblin civ would get the hint after awhile... but sadly, no.

I disagree. My dwarves have that tag as acceptable, aswell as butcher and make trophy from sapient.

IMO modding this should allow for the sale of caged sentients.
