Rigs of Rods, not actually a game
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:07:36 am »

So, after some nostalgia trip induces by the just released in2ane, I've found this little gem:

http://www.rigsofrods.com/

Basically it's a what have you sulator: it has cars, trucks, trailers, ships, planes all simulated more or less realistically, with soft body mechanics, damage, deformation and general crazyness.

It has been mentioned here and there on the forums, but I've not found a dedicated page to share mods, maps and crazy moments from this game.

I love this game, i can run it full HD and with all effects on, but the HDR generally makes things look like bollocks

Colour me intrigued. Downloading now.
Does the soft-body physics extend to the environment, such as trees, buildings etc?

In the video linked, the guy drives into a cactus; The car is stopped in its tracks and crumples like it hit a cement pillar..

So I'm gonna say no.

I wouldn't really call it a simulator per se, the physics are all kinds of unrealistic.
Doesn't mean it's not cool, it's just that it's... a game.
A sandbox vehicle-driving game.

My take is that car are modelled unrealistically (no engine block stopping the crumpling and far too elasticity) but the engine is solid. Good cars are pretty convincing, all considered.

The terrain is solid.

There are traks with racing scripted into, with online leaderboards.

I thought the deformation was a little strange.  It's cool, but the cars are like hollow boxes made of aluminum foil, if you hit a wall going fast enough the whole front of it just splatters.

Still fun though.

Nonsense. It's just modelling seriously awesome cacti.

on page two somewhere on the installer tries to sneak upon you an internet toolbar.

also, ie9 was a optional update that cameth to windows seven as mandatory just these days, around the 25 of jan.

I won't rule out coincidence.

The flight model is hilariously bad, like driving a car through the air.  I flew a MiG into the ground and it ended up, like, buttering the map.  There was a thin layer of jet covering several miles.
