Alright, this project is the first time I'm actually going to be using pumps, so I'd really appreciate it if I could get feedback on this design. This is from the Mechanical Erupting Volcano thread with what I interpret Girlinhat's design to be.

Code: [Select]
~ - Magma
0 - Wall
X - Pump facing inwards

0000000
0~~~~~0
0~~X~~0
0~X~X~0
0~~X~~0
0~~~~~0
0000000

Supposedly several layers of this, probably with more storage for magma, will produce a 1x1 tunnel of insanely high pressure, which will result in an explosion of magma out the top of the tower. Can someone with experience with pressure and pumps tell me if this will work?

Actually, I've been thinking about a rapid liquid applicator.  Be it magma or water, the goal will simply be to output as much water as possible in as short a time as possible.  This involves several pumps facing towards a center tile, so that the fluid is being pushed to one central column.  When this column is opened at the bottom, it will NOT enjoy pressure from the chamber, as the 4 pumps facing inwards will clog the area and prevent regular pressurization.  However, it WILL enjoy pump pressure, which can be several magnitudes more terrifying.  Anyone who's toyed with pressurized pumps before will know how this works, with a pump pressing water into a tunnel it can move water at a rate of 7/7 every few frames, which is enough to rush through a pipe pretty quickly and overflow it.  However, 4 pumps facing a central open shaft, will pump 4x as much liquid, giving a faster flow.  5 layers deep, that's 20 pumps providing constant pressure down a tube that will far surpass traditional pressurization.  Done correctly, this can easily result in superpressure pumps that can deliver a solid 1 tile wide tube of liquid to nearly any corner of the map near-instantly, promptly overflowing.  This could be used to have one central reservoir that can instantly cause several locations to overflow, not from timing of valve release but simply from speed of fluid.  The pressure would be so high as to make the flow of liquid nearly instant!
Has anyone had a chance to look this over?

It actually doesn't matter where the pumps are and what way they face. You could just build a bunch of pumps pointing in random directions in your magma reservoir, and they'll pressurize the magma just fine. This is because the way pressure works, the game sucks magma out the source tile, and then tries to find a place to put it - favoring the lowest open point (which is lower or equal to the pump), and it finds the lowest point by pathfinding - and then it teleports the magma there, not via some logical simulation of fluid movement. This means, that if you have a pump stack going up inside your tower, then the entire pump stack will act to pressurize the magma. If your pump stack goes up 15 tiles above ground, then a ground-level vent will erupt with the output of all 15 pumps. Thus the pump stacks can actually do double duty, both filling magma reservoirs and pressurizing it.

So other things... You only need one pump stack to fill all 4 towers. As long as the towers are connected by underground magma lines, pump-pressure will ensure all the towers fill up (pumps will always fill up to their level, regardless of how convoluted the path the fluid has to take). Of course having a pump stack in each tower would dramatically increase the magma-pressurizing effect, but its not needed if you plan to release the magma by opening the reservoirs.
An even cooler idea would be to build the towers entirely collapsible. Make the bottom walls of the tower out of raised bridges, and include an internal support linked to a lever (bridges, even when raised, wont provide support - but they'll hold the magma in!). When the lever is pulled, the tower will self-destruct, leaving columns of magma momentary hanging in the air before splattering everywhere and drowning everything. Of course the raising bridges could also be used for controlled releases.

Making your Dorf the only animal trainer in the entire fort would work. Plus the puppies would follow the war dog parents around, so you'd end up with a self replicating carpet of teethtacle dawgs.

And yeah, materials for shields are only taken into account when used to bash things good. Which is why copper is currently the best, as it is the densest armour grade material out there :p

Weird. Rather disappointing, too, since I usually save steel for shields and weapons unless it's a common material for my fortress. *Shrug*.

Eep. I nearly maxed out my RAM trying to load up the world again. This fortress on The Island of Socks might not last long enough for me to blow it up.

I'm sure of one thing, however. If this world isn't blown up by Project A.R.M.O.K., then the next one damn well will be. I want 0.31.25 to go out with a...

Heh. I figured something like this might happen with an 8x10 embark site. It takes nearly 1.3 gigs to load up the map, though it seems to drop about 150k after the initial load.

Well, if this fortress -does- last, then I believe I've found my candidate for Project SPARTAN.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

His older brother died in a previous goblin attack, so there's the revenge thing working for him. Also he's Incredibly Tough as a bloody baby. He likes Raw Adamantine and he's only been born today.  :o

He worships the god of mountains, the goddess of victory, war, and fortresses, and the goddess of trade and wealth.

Ladies and gentledorfs...

THIS

I'm thinking of using a 21x21 room, but it'll be so full of masterwork gold statues that there'll only be five places left to stand.

1. Bed.
2. Chair.
3. Table.
4. Nest box.
5. Quantum stockpile.

This essentially be a 1x5 room. I'm also trying to figure out how to incorporate a grate into it so that there can be a source of water, but I might be able to get by with a floor grate and a waterfall. I'm not sure where I'd stick it, though. *Shrug*.

EDIT:

After further review, I think I can get by with a 7x7 room that's full of statues except for the five places to stand. Also, I'm thinking of maybe using two or three turkey hens to ensure that there are enough in case one dies. Any ideas for the grate?

Maybe I should leave out the grate, but have yearly doctor / well visits. I'll probably keep the doctor isolated from the rest of the fortress too, but with more standing room and less feral turkeys.

EDIT 2:

Alright, I've decided on a design. 5x5 room so that it takes less time to dig out (and still has room for 20 statues), and so that I can have 8 chambers for other children. The best child after that time and / or the one that's still alive will get to claim the equipment and the dogs. Any other children still alive, and the doctor, will be sacrificed to the mighty Sockthulu.

Wait, won't your Dorf need to be able to path to all the statues for the room to be able to encompass each one? So you could make a pretty large room, filled with golden statues, make it a barracks, dining room, study and bedroom, give it to your Dwarf, and watch as the happiness rises?

If the statues are already in the room before the bedroom, study, and dining rooms have their size assigned, then yes. Otherwise, the statues don't limit the size of the room.

As for the barracks, I'm thinking of giving that to whoever survives to age 12, but make it a danger room to train skills. Lock them in for a season or two and they'll have pretty good skills by the time they're done. Alternatively, instead of locking them in, I could just make that their barracks and give them a bed elsewhere. With a break every three months, they should be fine.

Yep. ^^
The Climactic Amazing Guild is the name of the local government. Their symbol is two apparently not-so-forgotten beasts.

I love these dwarves. :D

Oh, and every artifact they've made so far has been nearly worthless, but has an awesome name.
