This makes me afraid of Yellowstone now.  :o

Think about it this way: should Yellowstone erupt, it would completely stop Global Warming, instead starting an extremely long winter.

Thoughts like this help me cope with other thoughts, such as global thermonuclear war. Two things in the world can stop Global Warming now. Both involve millions of people dying.

Thoughts like that make me realise I love humanity. I have no idea why.
Dorfiness has replaced all semblance of morality?

We must use !!SCIENCE!! to study this.

I stopped thinking of "ethics" the instant I passed my philosophy exams. I had stopped thinking "ethically" long before that, around the same time I joined thee forums. ‼Science‼ about correlation?

Does it count as a lone dwarf if he has a menagerie of weird and wonderful beasts to go down to HFS with him?

Also, if you don't want to have a anticlimactic fire clown explosion, but still retaining difficulty, and aren't completely against modding, you could mod out fire clowns and replace them with another kind of clown.

With the magma supply, I wouldn't use the "mechanical volcano" principle of putting the pump stack into the volcano itself - as dorfy as that is. What I favor, is using multiple auxiliary feeder pumps to feed the base of the pump stack. If you used about 5 feeder pumps, drawing from different points around the magma pipe and pumping the magma through shafts to the pump stack, then they could probably feed enough magma to the pump stack to achieve maximum output. The advantage, is you don't need to drain the volcano and wait for it to refill - which seems like a terrible waste of perfectly good magma.

I've used this method to power a magma-sea pump stack, rather than trying to sink the pump stack into the magma sea, I built a feeder pump system to draw magma directly from the map edge (the edge of the magma sea), so that the magma would be replenished by the map edge as fast as it was pumped away. I also created an obsidian barrier to wall off the rest of the magma sea from my pumping zone, allowing the magma sea to remain pristine and undisturbed while still providing my artificial volcano with limitless magma.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wouldn't actually be draining the volcano and refilling it. I'd be using the magma from said volcano to fill four towers that each have pump stacks in them. That way, massive amounts of magma with fewer size limitations.

I love the idea of Urist Smith here. :D
Maybe assign every wardog in the fortress to him? If he goes through a Project SPARTAN training program, he might be able to survive the inevitable trauma of their deaths. Or I could make him the only trainer in the fortress so they'd follow him around. Does anyone have further thoughts on this?

Any !!SCIENCE!! studying dorfiness is a good thing in my opinion.

I'm not sure how I feel about having two dwarves as opposed to just the one. I'm pretty sure I can keep him / them insanely happy either way by turning the entire area into a massive statue garden filled with Masterwork Gold Statues. It'd probably kill my nobles to have another dwarf with such luxury, but there's always magma for the whiners.

Anyway, why copper shields as opposed to candy? Would this be for miscellaneous object user? If that's the case, then why not steel to help prevent glancing blows?

Alright, this project is the first time I'm actually going to be using pumps, so I'd really appreciate it if I could get feedback on this design. This is from the Mechanical Erupting Volcano thread with what I interpret Girlinhat's design to be.

Code: [Select]
~ - Magma
0 - Wall
X - Pump facing inwards

0000000
0~~~~~0
0~~X~~0
0~X~X~0
0~~X~~0
0~~~~~0
0000000

Supposedly several layers of this, probably with more storage for magma, will produce a 1x1 tunnel of insanely high pressure, which will result in an explosion of magma out the top of the tower. Can someone with experience with pressure and pumps tell me if this will work?

Actually, I've been thinking about a rapid liquid applicator.  Be it magma or water, the goal will simply be to output as much water as possible in as short a time as possible.  This involves several pumps facing towards a center tile, so that the fluid is being pushed to one central column.  When this column is opened at the bottom, it will NOT enjoy pressure from the chamber, as the 4 pumps facing inwards will clog the area and prevent regular pressurization.  However, it WILL enjoy pump pressure, which can be several magnitudes more terrifying.  Anyone who's toyed with pressurized pumps before will know how this works, with a pump pressing water into a tunnel it can move water at a rate of 7/7 every few frames, which is enough to rush through a pipe pretty quickly and overflow it.  However, 4 pumps facing a central open shaft, will pump 4x as much liquid, giving a faster flow.  5 layers deep, that's 20 pumps providing constant pressure down a tube that will far surpass traditional pressurization.  Done correctly, this can easily result in superpressure pumps that can deliver a solid 1 tile wide tube of liquid to nearly any corner of the map near-instantly, promptly overflowing.  This could be used to have one central reservoir that can instantly cause several locations to overflow, not from timing of valve release but simply from speed of fluid.  The pressure would be so high as to make the flow of liquid nearly instant!

Copper shields, because the only effect shield material has is in the damage of a shield bash --> A heavier shield is a better shield.

As an amendment to the two dwarf idea, have one be kittted out in max candy, and the other kitted out in max copper/leather

So material doesn't have an effect on defense for shields, as long as it's some kind of metal?

Exactly. If a material is good for hammers, it is good for shields.

Would this mean adamantine shields are basically Oddjobs hat in shield form?

Yes. Come to think of it, wooden shields are kinda like Randomtask's shoes in shield form.
