Project A.R.M.O.K.
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:14:58 am »

Quote from: Elifre
I have decided, that the ultimate goal of my fortress is to tap into the power of the volcano to flood the entirety of the map. My plan is to eventually make four truly massive towers, put pump stacks in each of them (all linked to THE LEVER), and fill them with magma. I'll then set up a GlaDOS style lever room with a dwarf sealed inside along with enough food and booze to last ten years, made entirely of obsidian (with an obsidian hatch to resupply as needed), and wait for the eventual demise of the fortress.

With the one remaining dwarf safely sealed inside the room, I'll have exactly two jobs left.

1. PULL THE LEVER.

2. Dig down to HFS with my last remaining dwarf (decked out in as many layers of candy as possible, including candy clothes and a candy pickax, plus several candy shields) and order him to conquer it.

If he survives, then he'll have truly won Dwarf Fortress and be considered a god. If he fails, then that's still pretty damn dorfy. ^^ Either way, this, and no less, is the only fitting end for this fortress of dwarfiness.

I'd really appreciate additional ideas for this! Armok knows I'll need the help.  :D

I moved this to a separate thread to keep the ideas separate from the main thread. This is my plan for ending my fortress on The Island of Socks, and I'll definitely need the help, experience, and dorfiness of the community to pull this off.

All hail the All-Reaching Machine of Killing!

List of ideas to incorporate (so far):

#01 Project Spartan, from the Dwarven Childcare thread.
#02 Pressurized magma, from the Mechanical Erupting Volcano thread. Maybe girlinhat's version? I could use some help with this part.
#03 U.R.I.S.T. from the stupid dwarf tricks on the wiki.
#04 Fully equipped, using the notes on the wiki concerning armour stacking.
#05 Pickaxes as weapons, from a variety of sources. Mostly my own testing with this.
#06 The absolutely massive amounts of gold and silver on my map to create an insanely valuable happiness room.
#07 Temple to Sockthulu, and other sock-related ideas.
#08 Engrave the obsidian room before digging down to HFS. Credit goes to Shintaro Fago for this idea.
#09 Melt off fat? Might be tricky to do without killing the dwarf. Credit to Gamerlord for the idea, though it needs refinement for now.
#10 Massive army of wardogs following the dwarf as assistance? Urist Smith as the dwarf's name? Credit to Ivir_Baggins and Loud Whispers, respectively.
#11 Two dwarves? I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I'd like to keep it one, but I could be persuaded with a good argument for two. Credit to Loud Whispers.

I thought Boatmurdered did this >.> It was called project "Fuck The World"
Boatmurdered did, but Boatmurdered was run by a series of madmen, rather than a single ambitious madman-dwarfy-thingy-with-help. Its goal was more kill everything with magma while causing severe emotional trauma to everyone, and less kill everything with an insanely over-elaborate plan involving magma, socks, and the lone insane survivor challenging the depths of HFS.

Boatmurdered was truly awesome and shall forever remain one of the most important and dorfy events in dwarven history. What I am trying to do is to emulate the "Fuck the world" part, while attempting to make it even more dorfy. I plan to block out the light of the sun and replace it with the light of the lava falling from the sky, and turn The Island of Socks into a dorfy paradise of doom and burning elves.

But... I'll need a -lot- of help getting this all set up. I have ambition, but I lack the experience needed to bring my plan to fruition. I have the intense hatred of elves, but I have yet to melt a single one. I need the help of experienced dwarves who can help me to design and implement a self-destruct device that only the most dorfy among us can even conceive of.

So...You're essentially creating a dwarf who is both a Terminator and Skynet at the same time...

Questions:

Where will you farm after lava engulfs the map and the rest of your dwarves?

Gain you please give us a basic layout of your intended impregnable fort?

Also, since you're gonna be using Project SPARTAN, and a danger room from what I read in the other thread, does this mean you'll actively keep your
Armagge-Dorf away from the general population?

If you're lone dwarf, battle hardened SPARTAN and danger room style, clad in multiple adamantine armor, actually defeats the HFS...what will you do afterwards?

My plan is to have this dwarf separated from the rest of the fort as soon as he reaches child status (1.5 years, I think), so as to not form emotional attachments or social skills. Maybe have multiple children in case one or more die? The entirety of the life of this dwarf will be to train, and to wait for the rest of the fortress to fall. Once that happens, he'll (or the best if multiple, with the rest sacrificed) head to HFS and attempt to conquer it. If he succeeds, I'll obviously need to dedicate a massive monument to him made of pure candy. :D (Maybe in another fort, given the circumstances for starting the conquering >.>).

In terms of farming, lava flooding is only in case the rest of the fortress falls. However, the entire fortress is self-sustainable and can easily be sealed off from the rest of the world. See this thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=98923.0

Thanks for the feedback. :D

EDIT:

I think I'll have to link THE LEVER to the gate as well to make sure it seals up the fortress while destroying everything else... Ideally, everything will be linked to just one.

It was a project with the same name with a slightly different goal. He wanted to make a randomized homicidal AI-ish mechanical fortress with various terrible ways to die. I think, it's been near 6 months since I last heard anything but a "I'll get to it at some point" though.

Your best bet for getting magma is probably with the good old pumpstack.  If you make the inlet start several layers down in the magma sea rather than the top, it'll give you a constant flow of magma.  More towers = more instant magma, of course.

Flooding the map with said magma, iiis tricky.  You'll want to design each tower with screwpumps at the second-lowest level (drawing from the lowest internal level) pumping outwards to get it spewing at a decent rate.  If you just want one final gasp of "FUCK YOU AAAAALLL!!!!", then that's enough.  For something more permanent, you'll need to wall off the map edge as close as you can get to it.  I'd also suggest making the bottom of one of the towers just a set of trapdoors that drop into one of the central fortress areas with enough of the fun red stuff to flood the place.  Nothing says "screw you all; we're going to hell!" quite like flooding your own home with magma.

If you need help with power for the screwpumps, I have one or two ideas that might do the trick.

Thanks for your help, though I'm not quite sure I want pumps going all the way down to the magma sea. That's about a hundred z-levels down, though to be fair, there -are- about 80 layers in it. I may have gone a little overboard with the advanced world generation. >.>

I'm thinking about using the magma provided by the volcano I'm on to drain off a fair share to each tower. It'll refill itself, and I'm already using it for my metal industry, so it's a convenient resource. It will, however, be really slow to fill the towers unless I can figure out a way to get magma from it at a higher rate. Maybe dig into it from multiple levels at once, though that could of course drain it faster than it can replenish itself. I could certainly use practical ideas for getting the magma reserve, though this project will take at least twelve years to complete, and most likely more than that.

As for the towers themselves, I'm thinking of making them probably 20-30 z levels high, but give them a large volume. They'll have to be pretty big to cover the embark area (8x10). Anyway, I don't know much about pumps, or magma pressurization, but I do know that I want it to maximize the rate at which magma is pumped out of the top. It needs to be a massive explosion of magma that destroys everything in minutes, and preferably seconds (likely also killing my computer, but eh. Someone's bound to have a computer that can run it, and I can always upload the save just before turning it on).

I also had the idea to make a floor at the output level that covers or mostly covers the embark site. I'm not sure if I want there to be holes in the floor so that there can be a magmafall onto the top of the fortress, or not. Either way is bound to have magma spilling over the edges which sounds really cool. Does anyone have any ideas for this?

I'm a little iffy on the flooding the fortress part, though. I picture this as either the last dwarf alive will win, or the fortress will make a neat home for the clowns that come to visit. Dorfy hell-holes also suit clowns rather nicely.

As for the technical parts of putting this together, ANY help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. And rewarded with imaginary cookies.

It's a shame the previous Project Armok fell through, yours looks cool, though.

The lone dwarf must start engraving the obsidian room in the moment the last dwarf outside dies. He then can't pull the lever until the whole room is engraved in horrible pictures. Bonus points for migrants coming right before the magma carnage

Excellent idea, but this does mean finding a suitably large area of natural obsidian for his room. I suppose I could just make some if needed. It might be better if he just carved the walls, though. Thoughts?
