It had profession. Which was: Basically anything, so long as it is not useful.

Profession was as useful a the DM made it, if you had Profession: Sailor, then that'd be pretty useful if your campaign was a sea faring one, and your dm made encounters other then, this is a single skill check (locked chest) or kill these enemies.

Although true that profession sailor is a exception in that it has some limited uses, it is still almost always a better idea to have a NPC to handle the ship so as to not waste the PCs skill points and actions.

There's plenty of non-combat challenges in this campaign, and they're all done using the new limited set of skills, and they work fine.

The old profession and trade skills were 90% roleplaying.  When all the supposed roleplayers got mad and complained that the skills discouraged roleplaying I was kind of confused because these guys who say they're all about the RP have suddenly decided they need hard rules for it.  It makes it look like they're looking for reasons to be indignant.

Skills are there so you can't god mod.   It'd be pretty lame if your character was a sailor by trade and because there was no specific skill for it, anyone could steer or run a ship the same as he could.  Climbing and Swimming aren't the same thing, same with hearing and seeing.


edit: which maptools version are we using?

fakeeditedit: also herding cows wouldn't be profession, it'd be handle animal!

Climb/swim and seeing/hearing are similar enough that it's reasonable to put them in the same skill and it reduces unnecessary complexity.  I've been having to say this a lot lately:  A design is perfect not when there's nothing left to add but when there's nothing left to take away.  Why can't the DM just say "Alright, you're a sailor, make a dexterity check to see if you can steer the boat properly" or "Make an insight check to see if you can reckon the right way to go?"  Likewise "You're not a sailor, you can make an athletics check to help with the rigging and give him a bonus but you can't steer the ship"

If people are god modding that's the group and DM's problem, not the game's.  That's why the peasant railgun and iron heart surge exploit aren't legitimate complaints against 3e.

Cript:  By all means punch your way through every skill challenge.  I'm sure something interesting will come of it.

Yeaaaah, I'm not gonna bash my way though skill challenges. Theres a time and a place for senseless violence, but it's not all the time. I am also a wizard, so that means I'm naturally physically weak, so that eliminates physical means of bashing.

Question for the GM: What time and Timezone are you doing this thing?
