Will the superbowl effect our plans to play dungeons and dragons?

I'll let that answer it'self.

Why would people play football in the winter? The super bowl should be in the summer, or even better, fall.

I don't watch the superbowl, so I'm good.

All the backgrounds are fine so far.  I'm fine with (And encourage) creating your own fluff (like the silver beards portending runesmiths among the dorfs.  That's fine, and we can consider it canon for the game world) as long as it's not disruptive.  I don't think that'll be a problem.

As for magic, any powers with the arcane keyword use Ohr, which is an omnipresent energy that emanates from (And technically is) the magic god Xerath.  Mages don't have to worship him but it would be weird if they didn't have some kind of respect from him, because he is magic.  As a mage, you can sense the Ohr and detect enchantments by feeling the way it flows around something.  Eventually a mage becomes so accustomed to it that it's like an extra sense.  Walking through an antimagic zone is like walking with your eyes closed.

The superbowl shouldn't be a problem for me. I can make it.

Yeah, I'm thinking once we get into the swing of things we should consider looking at biweekly sessions, if there's a time everyone's available (Thursday maybe?) and everybody's okay with that  so we can keep things going more quickly.

Once everyone's acquainted with the new framework I think we can probably do 4-6 encounters a session.  With 10 encounters in a level, it would take almost half a year to reach the Paragon tier.

I'm at school all day Monday-Thursday. Earliest I'd be able to join on Thursday would be around 3:30pm my time (11:30pm GMT).

Sounds like probably 6:30 or 7 thursday (11:30-12 GMT) would be the best time.  That works for me.
