4e D&D Campaign
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:50:32 pm »

Title says it.  I've got some crazy bitchin' kickass ideas for a campaign, and unlike the last few times I've tried similar things, I've done less overpreparation of the first adventure and more skeleton-outlining of the arc in general, so I know I can do it this time.  (All of my previous games have failed because I spent way too much time on the first adventure and completely neglected the coming adventures, so I burned out on preparation and couldn't get past the first one.  This time I've learned my lesson)

Info:  It's 4e.  I'm not budging on that one.  3e has its place, and 4e has its place, and this is something that needs to be 4e.  In my eyes 3e is best for low level swords and sorcery gameplay where magic is rare and characters die often.  It gets too crazy at high levels.  4e is best for "epic" games where the heroes are larger than life and can feel like great big badasses with all kinds of magic without turning the game into a mess.  This is the second type of campaign.  I won't show my hand, but the campaign will have some (I hate this word, it's been ruined, but this time it's being used correctly) epic stuff in it.

So, basic info.  You should probably know how to play, or at least have an idea.  If you know how to play and can find a character generator (They're around, and I would assume they're legal) then you don't need the books.  If you don't know how to play or can't find a character generator and don't have the books PM me and we'll figure something out.  You don't have to make a guy until closer to when we actually start, but when you post interest it'd be best to say what times you're available.  I can probably fit my schedule around whenever it needs to be done, but Sunday at 10PM GMT would probably be the best.  Try to put times available in GMT for simplicity.

Five people.  Maybe six, maybe four, five is the ideal.  Your character should probably be good or neutral, I'll tolerate evil if it doesn't become disruptive, but remember that you're part of an adventuring party that's mostly serving the cause of good.  The initial hook is the cliche call for adventurers to do some job.  As a result, your characters don't know each other by default but you can decide some of them do if both players agree to know each other.  Remember the roles and try to have one person of each role.

Anything from the first two PHBs goes.  Races from PHB3 aren't in it by default, if someone wants one we can talk about it.  I'm doing a mostly custom cosmology and setting, the default 4e setting always left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anything else I think of (There will be stuff I forgot) will go here.  World information will come in the next post, I do that part for fun and this campaign actually arose from idle scribbling and "Hey, it'd be totally badass if..." plus scavenged bits of cosmology from a previous campaign.

Game'll be on maptool, by the way.  I have new internet and it shouldn't get fucked up like it used to (The other big killer of old campaigns, besides bad execution)

World Info:

Spoiler: History (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Gods (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Race Info (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: The Kingdom of Bael (click to show/hide)

The Southern Peninsula is at the southeast terminus of the world, and connected to the mainland by that little isthmus at the top.  The entire peninsula is ruled by King Bael IV.  Crestport is the capital.  Southport is the seat of the Prince, Bael V.  Saltcastle is the third largest city, mostly inhabited by fishermen and sailors, and is well known as a den of depravity and lawlessness.  The other towns are small and mostly don't warrant specific mention.  Hamlets dot the countryside but aren't marked on the map.

Khazam is the entrance to the dwarven kingdom of Thurgim.  Gol'kharim is the ancestral home of the Goliaths.  Black Mountain is the highest peak in the world, and feared by most as a place of ill omen.  It's said when Black Mountain eclipses the sun terrible things take place.

The southern peninsula is mostly pretty warm, with light rainfall, and crops (corn, wheat, and soybeans mainly) are planted throughout the dry season.  The first month and last three months of each year are marked by constant, torrential rainfall, and flooding forces people out of most of the smaller towns.

The campaign begins midway through the rainy season, one of the worst on record.  Most of the hamlets have been completely abandoned, and only twenty or thirty people are still in Buckstead Flats.  In the overcrowded slums of Crestport the black flux is rampant, the worst outbreak in living memory.  Even the King has fallen ill.  Knowing his time is almost up anyway, Bael IV has refused treatment and is expected to die within the month.  If all goes smoothly Prince Bael will be on the throne by first planting.

I'm in. Anyway. I'm thinking I want to go into something like Striker or Defender.

Sunday at 10 GMT sounds great to me.

I've been looking for a 4.e game. Sunday at 10 GMT works for me. For here, it would be about 3 in the afternoon. and I don't have anything going on sundays. I'd like to join.

Friggin' dibs. Weekends should be good for me. Two Blade Chaotic Good Ranger, porting his backstory and whatnot from an unfinished campaign, if that's not a problem.

Also, yes, I know the books say Chaotic Good doesn't exist in 4e. I don't care, it's what he is.

10 PM GMT  = 2 PM my time. Possibly doable, but not during the week. How long would game sessions last?

Probably 2 to 4 hours.  Starting level is 1, use the Standard Array to generate ability scores.

I didn't see half orcs on the list of races we can play. Are they allowed for this campaign?

Yeah, they're allowed.  I didn't list them because there's nothing special.  They live in human or orc society

I'm interested, I've dm'd a lot of 4.0 but only played a few times, should be fun.  Probably be half elf, not sure on class though.

The time for me would be 5 PM, which is doable.

edit- this is standard array correct? 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10

I don't know how to play this edition of D&D, I've only seen videos of it being played. It does seem somewhat easier than 3.5 to learn though, so I'll join.

I just got to find out about the races, classes and abilities that I can take, then learn the rules. Otherwise, I'm in, since my other D&D session won't interrupt this (what with me being in Australia). Now I just have to figure out what 10pm GMT is equivilent to over here...

Alright, I will grab a Goliath defender. Most likely warden.

Can you tell me where we will start and what the job is so I can set up a backstory?

I have a level 1 dwarven runepriest that I never got to use. Would that be acceptable?

Ooooh, shiny new campaign! I don't have the books, rules, or one of those character generator things. But it would be fun to play a character that someone else made for a change, I am getting too accustomed to my own weirdness. Maybe a gnomish Palakku worshipper with enough sense to know that telling other people about the voices causes the wrong sort of Fun...

But hey, looks like you have plenty of players already, so I will probably just be watching, spying on you all, from the edge of reality where madness dwells...
