- Swap 'Help of a Secretary' for 'Hasty Calligraphy'. Take two full rounds and a DC equal to 10+(spell level) against Dex or Int. On success, the user creates a sutra on the spot. Some kind of disadvantage needed.
I like my cat-in-a-suit secretary. She helps during negotiations by giving me insights into what the other person is thinking. Seriously though it's the best out-of-combat feature that Spirit Detective has. Not only that, but there are craft checks dedicated to creating sutras. They also don't have spell levels. While I wouldn't mind quick calligraphy refills after battle I wouldn't want to risk it during a fight, especially if I do an especially difficult to create sutra.
On another note my character has a ring of sustenance, which lets him go without food and water, and shortens his sleep cycle to 2 hours. I would have 6 hours to write up some new sutras while people sleep. It should be enough time to make sutras since sutras are just paper and ink, and therefore would have a short crafting time.
- Sutra of Disintegration : no fatigue.
It does a solid 240 damage. That can kill some CR 20 creatures in one hit, or take half of most dragons HP in one hit. Something to slow me down after making it is nothing in comparison to the damage. I wouldn't mind this change, but remember that the sutra is broken if you can make it quickly without anything to slow you down.
- (Feat) Sutra Carrying Capabilities : Each time you gain this feat, increase two types of sutra's carrying capacity by 2 (excluding Disintegration) OR increase Disintegration by 1 (provided that you already have Etheral Calligraphy).
I like being able to increase the sutra carrying capacity by 2 for two types of sutras. Increasing Disintegration is a dangerous game to play with balance. It would become the insta-win button. A Wyrm (second hardest) Red Dragon don't have more than 480 HP on average.
Second change seems to be needed.
First, not so ...
Third, perhaps change to a flat +1 across all sutra?
There is always the option of moving Dual Characters up to an earlier level, because level 12 already has a lot going for it without it. It would double my capacity earlier, meaning that I could use a fair number of Sutras of Destruction before I run out in a big dungeon.
I don't mind not being a heavy damage dealer. This class is kind of my vacation from powergaming. I've never played a roleplaying based class, or a trapmaster before and this looks like fun to me, even if I'm shadowed by rogues and barbarians in combat.
