Question regarding awakened animals: how would you determine the stats of an awakened cat if you're using it as a PC? Would it go as with the normal rules laid out by the spell? Or would it be like playing as a race with weird attribute adjustments?

3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 HD. Its type becomes magical beast (augmented animal).

added to the normal animal template.

Ex: cat:: of 1 HD, Small, -6 Str, +4 Dex, +1 Wis, -8 Int, -2 Cha.

You gain all the natural armor and base saves of the original animal. Also, you gain racial hit dice of 2 + original (if the original had 1 or less, you only gain 2 RHD) along with an appropriate LA (cats would be +0.)

IIRC there are no rules for it, so you have to consult your DM.
