I haz a few question about ranger animal companions. According to the list of alternate animal companions, I should be able to gain a tiger as a companion at level fourteen, right? Second, how do you go about getting an animal companion? There can't really be a random tiger that appears from nowhere.

Well... the Ranger's thing says it's like the Druid's thing. The Druid says they pray for 24 hours and *poof*.

I doubt that's how rangers do it.

I'd say you tame an animal and then do a minor ritual to bond it. I think Dorfland might be a good place to gain a companion. Skeletal Carp? Elephant? (it seems Rangers have 1/2 the level of druids, so elephants won't work - they are CR 7 like the Dire Bear, and both come from the 13th level or above list...) Or maybe a more mundane companion.

Anyways, it's either 'a wizard did it', or 'you tame an animal.'

I'm hoping their can be a see-unique-tiger-grargh-me-catch-it thingy. Having an animal just miraculously become a companion just seems so... cheaty.

On a semi-related note, is there a problem with using a tiger as a mount?

Being a mount unsuitable for riding, you get -5 to Ride.

Also, it's thunder n lightning here! D: Internet was knocked out from 8:30~10:01... damned Comcast!

Oh, if only I could... DAMN YOU, HALF-LEVEL ANIMAL COMPANIONS! If only I could get them at the same levels druids can.

Being a mount unsuitable for riding, you get -5 to Ride.
Is that affected at all by having an exotic saddle fit for a tiger?

Barring that helping, is there a Riding Proficiency (Cat) feat or something? :3

Military saddle = +2
Handle Animal 5 ranks = +2
If you are 13th level, your max skill level is 12 w/o Dex.
The highest DC you'll need to pass is either 15 (spur) or 20 (fast mount/dismount).
So... 50/50 chance roughly of failing a DC20 check. I think Skill Focus gives +3 to Ride. Dex bonuses apply. Also, if you take a wartiger, the highest dc needed is 15- autosuccess.

Hmm. Rudra has Permanency and I think he also has Enlarge Person. Could he, perhaps, combine the two on Araph's plain tiger? :3

If you enlarge a tiger, I don't think Araph can even ride it...

In other news, I'm in the thunderstorm of my life.

Also, @SerCon, please specify what kind of robe? >.> Up to +3 enchantments can be bought here, an soon if you either hire an enchanter or get to a big city better enhantments available.

@Shoruke - I don't have the least inking of idea of what you're trying to do :P I wonder if they even sell bowls worth a year's wages...

I don't generally pay much attention to heavy-melee or Mounted-Combat-Based stuff when I'm trawling through books... there's always Skill Focus, to give you +3 to a skill. Or, depending on Skyrunner's tolerance of homebrew stuff, the Saddle of Riding.

And yes, I do have Permanency and Enlarge Person in my spellbook. I've even cast both of them in this campaign! (shocker; a lot of a wizard's spells actually go unused)

If you really want there is a feat in Complete Adventurer that grants +4 effective levels (so it's like you were 8 levels higher) for an animal companion. This means that you can have your dire tiger at the cost of a feat.

I was kind of hoping Shoruke or Fool or somebody who has a good grasp of magical robes might suggest some enchantments up to +3 to get. ^^^; I mean I'll buy a straight +3 if there isn't anything...

There's a couple in Sandstorm; on that casts Skin of the Cactus (I think it hurts people who attack you), one that gives you Full Concealment up to 10 rounds in a day...
The Robe of Stars might be a bit beyond a small town's price level, but it lets you hide in the Astral Realm (handy if you've got a lot of Summon Monster spells; you can summon your mooks and then hide while they fight for you), +1 luck bonus to saves (so basically it stacks with everything, luck bonuses are rare), and it comes with a set of six +5 non-reusable shurikens (which you are proficient with while wearing the robe).

OK, I'll look in Sandstorm. Also, what's your opinion on Retaliation (+2 Bonus; anytime Anya takes 10+ damage, armor automatically deals 1d6 damage to attacker. If attack puts Anya at -1 to -9 HP, attack does 3d6) or Roaring (+3 bonus; non-magical projectiles that deal less than 10 damage points on their damage roll do no damage, and the projectile is then immediately fired back at the attacker; additionally, +4 to Initiative)? Can those be applied to robes?

Retaliation doesn't look to great to me, unless we get utterly swarmed with 1HD goblins.
And if we DO get swarmed with 1HD goblins, well, that's why I bring two castings of Firebrand everyday. It is an ENTIRE BATTLEFIELD OF FIREBALL.
Also, wards.

Roaring looks okay... the ability to deflect lame-people projectiles isn't worth much, but sometimes fights are decided by who wins initiative, especially in high-level fights involving casters. (High-level wizard duels tend to be "whoever wins initiative doesn't get Disintegrated".)
Put those two abilities together, and yeah, that's a pretty cool robe actually.
