Nope! Narc is doing well! In fact, I'll give you an update on him!

Surprisingly, the fort is doing really well. We have 5 deaths: One (Legendary) craftsdwarf, who was murdered by a giant capybara; one marksdwarf who died while attacking a giant capybara; and two who died... well, you'll see.

Early Autumn: Possession

"We'll need fifty Draltha McBurgers for the mines, Count UrVlad wants an eight Ape McNugget kid's meal, and the workers up by the volcano want sixteen orders of McPlump McHelmet salads" said the Hauler. Urist McDonald nodded to herself. "Alright, that should be easy. I'll inform the cooks. Will that be all for you?" "Erm... Actually, could I get a bit of extra food, ma'am?" Urist froze. "Extra food? Whatever for?" "Well, it's my brother. He locked himself away in the Magma Forge. He hasn't been out in weeks... I'm getting worried. Could... Could you come up and convince him too eat?"

Urist McDonald sighed. She was FAR to busy to go all the way up to the magma forge, deliver food, and convince some suicidal Dwarf that he needed to eat. But, as the McDonald Charter said, the customer is always right! Urist sighed again. "Yep, I'll take him some food. Now, go deliver those orders!"

Urist leaned against the black, volcanic rock wall and stopped to catch her breath. Her food might taste good, but it sure wasn't good for her; she felt like she was going to have a heart attack. She'd have to start drinking Diet Coke with her McBurgers, she thought. Finally, she managed to catch her breath and walked on, towards the small black door at the end of the corridor. She could feel the air grow warm as she approached the magma forges. Not just the air; the ground itself was beginning to heat up. Shuddering, she pressed onward and pushed open the thick stone door.

A wave of heat barreled into her as she stood at the entrance to the magma forges. No one was smelting at the moment; the veins the miners were working on had been tapped out, and the forges sat idle while they searched for new veins. In the corner, however, one of the forges was barricaded crudely, with wood, cloth curtains, and rocks.

Urist poked her head past the barricade. "Hello? Is anyone here?" To her horror, she found a Dwarf, hiding in the barricade. He was emancipated and dehydrated, but otherwise uninjured. McDonald rushed to his side. "What happened?" she asked him as she fed and watered him. "Don't remember..." he groaned. "Made... Boot..." Urist looked up to see the most beautiful nickel boot she had ever seen, standing on the forge.

Late Autumn: Ambush!

The woodcutter walked through the jungle, a pile of lumber in his arms and a wooden axe at his side. He whistled merrily as he walked. "Ah, what a beautiful day!" he said to himself. Suddenly, a flash silver and a loud noise erupted from the nearby foliage. The Dwarf dropped his wood and drew his axe. "Who goes there?!" he shouted. Moments later, there was a second flash of silver, and a heavy scourge flailed across his arm. The Dwarf stared at the huge, bloody wound. "GOBLINS!" he shouted as the silver whip struck again, killing him.

The wooddwarves working in the surrounding jungle heard the Dwarf's scream. "Goblins! Run!" they took up the cry as they ran back to the safety of the fort.

The four marksdwarves heard the alarm while they were stalking a Capybara that was scaring some of the fishermen. "Goblins? We need to fight them off!" shouted one. "No! We need to get inside! We can shoot at them past the traps!" shouted the other. The four headed back to the fort. Three of them made it, but the fourth tripped on the undergrowth outside the entrance. Just behind him, a group of Goblins carrying silver whips cackled as they took up position. "GET INSIDE! I'LL HOLD THEM OFF!" he cried, firing a bolt at the nearest Goblin. Moments later, the cracks of five whips ended his screams of pain.

"Is he dead?!" cried one of his comrades. "No, he's still breathing!" shouted the other. "Then I'm going after him!" said the first, and darted back out the trapped corridor. "NO! Are you mad?!" shouted the third, but it was too late; the marksdwarf was out in the open. "Hey uglies, over here!" he cried as he shot one of the goblins in the back, killing him. "Look! Fresh Dwarf!" The goblins gave wild hoots as they charged. One missed, and tumbled past him into the trapped corridor. A second whipped the poor Dwarf on the food, making it literaly explode with gore. The marksdwarf fell to the floor and hit his head; as he did, the Goblins charged past into the hallway. Moments later, they were all trapped in cages.

The first marksdwarf was dead before a doctor could reach him, but the second suffered only a foot injury. He survived, and returned to active duty within a few weeks.

Meanwhile, with the forge available once again, the Dwarves began the forging of three silver warhammers, along with various copper weaponry and armor. Soon, the Dwarves of Anvilclasp will take the fight to their enemy!

I think you mean emaciated, man, unless he was dying of thirst and freed from oppression.

Early Winter, Year 2

Narc sighed with relief when Winterdirge walked up to her, a mug of Dwarven Ale in his hand. "Here, lass. Ye deserve some rest" he said as he took her pick and went to work.

Narc sat on a nearby rock, drinking her ale and watching Winterdirge work. After the Goblin Incident, the Count ordered that until the Magma Fortress could be completed a new entrance should be dug, one that could be more easily defended. Winterdirge made the plans himself, over the next week; he designed a three-part defense system to halt any invaders before they could cause any damage.

First, the potential invader would be forced to pass through a wide corridor filled with cage traps. This first stage wasn't meant to permanently stop the invaders; there weren't enough traps for that. That early trap was meant to cause chaos by breaking up the enemy ranks and, ideally, capture their leader. If the enemy survives this first trap, they will continue to what Winterdirge has dubbed The Bridge of Fate.

The Bridge of Fate is a narrow bridge, with a huge drop on either side. At the bottom of the chasm, Winterdirge has made plans for a pit to be constructed. The pit itself will be filled with spikes, and a lever pull will unleash a number of alligators into the pit to clean up the bodies.

The Bridge itself is heavily trapped, with dozens of swinging blades, stabbing spikes, and spinning discs. When the enemy attempts to cross the bridge, they are faced with two choices: Dodge the traps and plunge to their doom, or stand still and be hacked apart by the weapons.

If the enemy makes it past the first two traps, Winterdirge stated that he has plans for a third device, which he calls the Incinerator. What this Incinerator is and how it is designed, Winterdirge has refused to divulge; in fact, he did all the work on this device himself.

****************************************************

Late Winter, Year 2

Stoutpants swung his pick at the nearby wall. He sighed as rock and rubble tumbled down from the wall. He's mined nearly twenty feet with no sign of ore. The time has come to admit it: The veins were depleted. He would have to report to Winterdirge and ask for orders. Orders that would probably involve digging miles of exploratory tunnels looking for new veins. He sighed... His arms hurt just thinking about it. He put his pick on his shoulder, picked up the last bucket of ore that was left down here, and started the long climb to the magma chambers.

****************************************************

Heavy reptilian eyelids snapped open, revealing a single blood-red eye. it hungered and thirsted and wanted and ached, and murdered and pillaged and raped and destroyed and...

****************************************************

Stoutpants finally climbed out of the mineshafts and into the third Cavern. These giant holes in the ground always gave him the creeps, and the third one especially so, with its musty smell and dripping water. Stoutpants heard a loud squeak behind him and swung around, pick ready, dropping his bucket; but it was only a large, ugly crundle, who was staring at him.

"Shoo! Get out of here!" called Stoutpants. The Crundle only tilted its ugly head and squeaked again. Stoundpants took a step closer and swung his pick at the Crundle, trying to scare it. The Crundle only squeaked once more.

Stoutpants bent down and picked up a rock. When he looked back up, the Crundle was gone. Shrugging, Stoutpants picked up his bucket again and started climbing the stairs. He was glad that Count UrVlad ordered the stairway sealed away from the Caverns; in the old days, he had two more Caverns to walk through. Now, there was only one opening, where the masons haven't had time to build a wall yet, on the deepest Cavern.

*****************************************************

The creature to whom the eye belonged stretched itself. For hundreds of years, it has slumbered deep bellow the ground, so long that all have forgotten the beast's name. But now, with dozens of warm bodies working and drinking and eating on the living rock above it, Utesh awoke.

The stone around the creature groaned under its tremendous weight as the towering creature uncoiled itself. It had the long, muscular body of a viper, a pair of long, twisted antennae, and beige-colored scales, many of which were missing: the scars of thousands of years' worth of battles against other beasts of similar magnitude.

The huge creature raised its long head and sniffed the air. Something was near; something alive. Utesh crawled forwards, hissing.

*****************************************************

Stoutpants froze. He heard something. Something in the Caverns....

He whirled around, raising his pick. It was a Crundle; it started following him up the stairs. Stoutpants smiled. He knew just what to do...

Stoutpants continued up the steps, with the Crundle following him, coming closer and closer. Then, suddenly, a cage snapped shut around it. Stoutpants laughed. Thank Armok for McDonald and her love of exotic McNuggets! he thought to himself. And that's when he heard it.

Heavy breathing echoed in the enclosed staircase chamber. And with it was the sound of something heavy dragging itself along the stairs. Stoutpants, frozen with fear, tried to penetrate the darkness of the stairway bellow him. Shivering, he threw his torch down the stairs. For a moment, he saw something huge, something scaly, slithering up the stairs towards him; and then the torch went out. Stoutpants started running up the stairs, taking them three at a time. He made two steps before a pair of huge fangs, each as long as his arm, stabbed through his head. Stoutpants hung there, two huge fangs sticking through his head. He was already dead, but his body knew what to do even without his brain.

Stoutpant's body screamed.

*****************************************************

Eral was a Marksdwarf. At least, that's what his title was. What that meant is, he did whatever Urist McDonald told him to do. Usually, that involved shooting animals, or dragging caged animals back from the jungle while shooting at other animals. Once in a while, he got too shoot a Goblin. That was always fun.

He just got back from shooting a Giant Capybara when he heard the scream. It came from bellow, from the stairs that led down to the Caverns. Various pests had already come up the stairs; Crundles, Dralthas, Elk Birds... That was why Urist had Gar build numerous cage traps in the hallway. Elk Bird McNuggets were particularly delicious. But so far, nothing truly dangerous had come up from the Caverns. Nothing as bad as the Giant Capybaras from the jungle above. But that scream... That was the scream of a dying Dwarf.

Eral thought quickly, which is probably what saved the fort from certain destruction. He ran to the Alligator cages, and kicked them all open; he continued past, to the Ape Pit, and whistled to the gorillas to follow him. About half of them were trained for combat back when the fort was short on Dwarves, and those apes followed him; the rest followed their pack members. Then he whistled to the hunting dogs, and loaded his crossbow. He heard something big moving down in the tunnels, and realized that he made the right decision; whatever was about to come out of the stairs, he'd need all the help he could get if he was going to kill it.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Dwarves in Urist's farms panicked and fled, running up to the first floor or towards the stockpiles, far from the stairs. Soon, Eral found himself alone, except for the dogs, apes, alligators, and the two giant tigers the fort has tamed over the years. He'd hoped that the rest of his squad would make it, but that didn't seem likely. Two of them were out hunting, and one was still recovering from his injuries in the Great Goblin Siege, as the Count had dubbed it; like it or not, it seemed that he was alone.

Suddenly, a huge one-eyed viper burst forth from the stairway. Its fangs ran with blood and gore; clearly, someone lay dead on the stairs. Anger poured through Eral. "NOBODY ATTACKS MY FORT!" he screamed as he loosed a bolt from his crossbow. The bolt struck the monster on the forehead with a loud crack; bone fragments and gore showered off the wound. The monster's head wavered for a moment, then started to drop. "YEAH! That's right, VIPER! I beat you!" cried Eral as the monster...

Suddenly attacked, barely hampered by its gruesome wound. With lightning speed seeming impossible for something so large, the viper stroke with its huge fangs. Eral dodged, desperately; his right hand flew too close, however, and the viper's razor-sharp fang left a long, straight line of blood. Enraged, Eral raised his crossbow and fired another bolt. "CHARGE!" he screamed, following the bolt by swinging his crossbow at the viper. All around him, alligators, apes, and tigers charged the monster, striking with arms, teeth, and claws.

Bit by bit, the monster fell back. First it would appear wounded, as an alligator bit off a chunk of its flesh, or a tiger swiped at its head; and then, with lightning speed, it would bite a dog through the neck and kill it. Bolt after bolt found its mark in the monster's flesh, and the various animals slowly beat it back through sheer numbers. Finally, the viper bit a dog and shook it by the spine. As it raised its head, the monster revealed its throat. Eral fired one final bolt, which found its mark. Slowly, the monster stopped struggling. Dozens of animals bit and slashed it as it nodded its head back and forth, dazed. And then the beast was slain; Utesh the Forgotten Beast was no more.

**************************************************

Urist McDonald returned to her kitchen from a quick errand to find dozens of animals milling about, a giant snake dead on the floor, and a crossbow-wielding Dwarf panting from exhaustion besides it. "Ah, excellent! Dinner!" she cried with a smile as she began issuing orders to the few Dwarves brave enough to follow her down so soon after the noises have ceased. Utesh would feed the fortress for a month.

Unfortunately, the Glorious State of Anvilclasp calls for everyone to do their part. Originally, you were a furnace operator; but I thought, "if the furnace operators are gonna be running the forges, they might as well fetch the ore themselves". So you spent half your time running up and down between the mines and the forges. And then I said, "if he's down there already, might as well do some mining, right?" so I gave you a pick and shipped you off.

I don't really specialize my Dwarves. Right now, I have 32 Food Dwarves (All food related jobs, such as farming, brewing, hunting, butchering, and jobs dealing with food byproducts, like tanning, leatherworking, etc), 11 miners (Mining, stone detailing), 13 Rock Dwarves (all jobs related to stone and metal, including furnaces: where you were) and 12 Wood Dwarves. I only specialize if someone hits Legendary in a certain craft skill--and even then, not always. I just like having broad categories better, and it's working well; I'm swimming in food. And ore.

I do think that once I hit 100 Dwarves, I'll split Stone Dwarves and Metal Dwarves. But that won't happen for a while.

I am sorry that your Dwarf died, though... Would you like to be redwarfed?

I'll post the next update (a very short one) from Igor's PoV.

*****************************************

Spring, Year 3

Spring had come and gone too quickly for Igor. It was a good season; her stump hurt less, when the sun didn't bake it like in the Summer and the rain didn't drench it like in the Winter. And this particular Spring was a particularly good one. It wasn't anything that happened that made it good; if anything, it was the lack of notable events that made it special.

Following the Viper Attack in the Winter, Count UrVlad recruited additional men to the army. Igor volunteered, but although she wasn't bad with an axe, UrVlad deemed her unfit for service. "Sure, you can swing your axe just fine with one arm; but can you hold a shield? What if your squad is taking fire? How are you going to block a single arrow?" he shook his head. "I'm sorry, Igor. You've been loyal to me for a long time, but I can't let you join the army."

Igor lost herself in her work, of which there was much to be done. The new Path of Doom, as Winterdirge has dubbed it, was nearing completion, and this meant that lots of cage traps needed to be armed. Lots of cage traps means lots of cages; lots of cages means lots of wood; and lots of wood means lots of wood cutting. Which meant going outside. Igor set up more and more cage traps over the next few weeks. They'd captured a whole herd of buffalo (which McDonald impatiently butchered), a few more packs of monkeys, and, one day, a tribe of Capybara Men.

"What do we do with them?" asked Igor. She and Winterdirge were standing in front of the row of cages. "Kill them all?" he suggested. "It's what The Count would tell us to do". "That's why we didn't tell him about it!" countered Igor. "They might be... Animal-like, but they're still PEOPLE!" "Well then... I say we just keep them caged up for now."

And that's what they did, for lack of a better option. It bothered Igor for a while, but finally she got over it and went back to work.

Late in Spring, there was one incident. Gar was digging out the Pit on the side of the Bridge of Fate when one of the rocks she stood on collapsed. Gar plunged straight down for twenty feet, breaking her leg and landing in a pit from which there was no exit. A day after she disappeared, the stone on the side of one of the hallways in the fort suddenly broke open. Gar, battered, bloody, and weary, dragged herself out, limped to the nearest brewery, and drank a whole barrel of ale. Then she slept for three days and, refusing the doctor's request to examine her, went back to work.

Spring was also a time of great progress on Castle UrVlad, as The Count decided to name it. Nearly half of the stonework was finished. One day, while setting traps around the construction site, Gar caught sight of Winterdirge, who was sitting on a rock and staring at the castle. When she went up to talk to him, however, he disappeared.

From the Journal of Winterdirge, Early Summer, Year 3

Another group of migrants arrived today. I am worried. This many Dwarves moving into the area, in such a short time? We can use the extra hands, but we are bound to attract attention. And there are those whose attention we do not wish to attract.

We have fended off the Goblin Threat once. I fear that, with so much activity, they will soon come investigate. And if they come with a larger force, Armok help us all.
