Times when you've been really immersed in the game
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:45:56 am »

I'll start us off:
I was playing Ace of Spades with a few friends while talking over skype (except for one, he was playing BF3), and we each joined the same squad so we would spawn on eachother.
We then took hold of a single point on the map, but the greens were bombarding us from a broken down ship, using the same tactic we were (keeping one person safe if the other two died, so we keep spawning together).
So after we killed a few of them we pushed up, building small walls to keep their fire out, but then more greens came to where the action was and started attacking us from the north.
We were now pinned down, and then the map changed.

I've gotta say, that was one of the best gaming experiences I've had for a while.

So what about you guys?

Freespace. When the Lucifer first jumped in, I nearly pissed myself.

Likewise, when playing TIE Fighter, I was physically leaning my body from one side to the other as I weaved through streams of turbolasers and ion cannon fire. Nothing really compares to the adrenaline rush of those old combat-space-sims.

Bioshock 2. Bought more than a few games during the Steam sale but that game was one of the few that I sat down and played from beginning to end.

This. I enjoyed both games, but the small improvements in 2 made a huge difference. Delta was able to get so personal in a fight...

Other than that, the final battles in Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect 2 always gave me a satisfying rush, at least until the New Vegas DLC let me outclass it so far as to make it trivial.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Amnesia for me.  For some reason the atmosphere + the story really sucked me into the game.

Mirrors edge did it to me once. I forget most of it, but at some point I was in a building and started getting shot at and had to run away. And I ran, and I was doing so beautifully. Right before I smacking into a window I had to go through some bullets whizzed by me from behind and broke it for me. I dived out and it felt like just a half minute later I was a few blocks away. Everything just flowed beautifully, intensely, and there was some nice music to it.

It was probably only 2 minutes in which I was so well a part of it, but that right there justified the entire game for me.

As well.  I get into all the Half-Life games.

Playing Quake 2, I duck in my chair when Gladiators start playing beamspam.

This happens to me all the time in King Arthur's Gold. Everything just clicks into place and I find myself getting far too close to the screen.

ARMA 2 has really got me at moments too but I can't think of anything specific.

My Bioshock wrench-only playthrough. In the first few levels I swear that the damn thing actually had weight. Some of the best melee combat of the FPS genre in my opinion.

I've completely lost myself in The Path on several occasions and Armageddon MUD has both thrilled and terrified me in equal measure.
