I currently have two bedrooms which are both assigned to my broker.

Is this a bug, or is the game supposed to allow this?

Why wouldn't you be able to own two bedrooms? I doubt it's a bug.

strangely.. i think once i assigned a room to a dwarf.. he then for some reason slept in the barracks or something and claimed it, ditching his old room.

could just be in my dreams..

Yeah, I think you can assign as many rooms as you want, but dwarves that already have rooms appear a different color in the list, so if you somehow electro-psychically guess the color scheme, you won't double assign.
