Getting dwarves to unjam doors.
« on: January 25, 2012, 06:55:02 pm »

This has a problem that has cost me numerous forts, and would have cost me even more had dwarf fortress not crashed on me and forced a savescum: How do I get dwarves to remove those twenty pairs of socks lying around in the door from when a goblin died there? They have dump designations and everything, and aren't forbidden!!!

But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

Do you have a garbage zone designated?

Are the items owned by a dwarf?

might need to use cleanowned to make it so that they are no longer the property of anyone.  Although admittedly that's cheating.

How do I find out who owns it?

Maybe if I assigned them a room they'd move their shit there.

Is it quicker to deconstruct the door and rebuild it?  Would the dwarves move the socks out of the way or complain that there was no room for the door?

they are most likely forbidden if they came from gobbos. also check 'o'ptions / 'F'orbidden, this wont change the current pile of junk, but will take effect for the next siege.

edit: 'and they are not forbidden' - missed that. disregard.

Well, in fact, not forbidding the gobbo stuff is a very good way to have assorted junk lying on th battlefield forever because it has been claimed by some children...

It is quite possible that the socks are owned property of some dwarf.  Give every dwarf one or more cabinets in their bedrooms and they should eventually put the socks away, assuming the socks are not forbidden.

This is why I use raising drawbridges for emergency defend-the-fortress gates.  Any stray objects or small creatures in the way get smashed.

Or occasionally dorfs. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. After all, accidents do happen. ;)

When I had problems with this, designating it for dumping never worked.  I try claiming the items and the dwarfs went on their merry way moving them somewhere... I naively thought they were stockpiling the stuff.

Guess that explains why there's clothing lying all over the floor of some of the bedrooms.  Time to build more cabinets.  Or ignore it.
