-Build more JGCs and survey ships.
-Expand the larger shipyards.
-Tech into missiles, but don't make any sort of capital missile capability. We're going for fighter/FAC based missiles here, so high WH and engine, low fuel capacity.

No missiles! I veto anything about doing missiles ourselves. Missiles are mean and they tend to eat your puppies. You wouldn't like to have your puppy eaten, would you?

I'd say expand our shipyard capability. A medium-term objective should be to be able to build a strike carrier and its whole squadron in one go.
We should also start expanding the carrier yards to produce larger, meaner Fleet Carriers.

Also, Alpha Centauri should become a manufacturing ground as well, not just a source of income.

Will you terraform planets to the minimum standard or will you RP it and terraform to earth standard?

Actually, I'm also going to suggest teching into lasers, if only for reduced sized lasers for our fighters.

Well, laser makes perfect sense. So I must ask we do not use them.

Oh, we can already do that.

Bigger shipyards is a good idea, and relates to something I've been thinking about. A major obstacle for larger ships in a normal game is the geometrically increasing costs of large jump drives, but that doesn't really count with me SMing components. Instead I'm thinking about having a limit of 10,000 RP for a jump drive, and just have anything bigger than that be "technically impossible". This would set a cap based on the current level of jump drive efficiency (For the UHF this would be 15,000 tons; the next level would be about a years worth of research and make it 18,000; then two years for 24,000).

This would only apply to jump drives; we could still build enormous dreadnoughts that were simply limited to the jump gate network.

Will you terraform planets to the minimum standard or will you RP it and terraform to earth standard?

Ideally, I'd like to terraform everything to Earth standard (I usually do it in my games; in addition to flavor it also makes them invulnerable to beam weapons). In this particular case I rationalized it as both planets have millions of inhabitants, and Mars is at least moderately habitable now whereas Hope isn't.

The next tier of units *will* use fighters, if only because managing hundreds of gunboats is getting to be too much. If I can make a reasonable plasma fighter, I will; if not I'll be using lasers.

It makes sense to terraform planets to Class M, because while it takes a while to get it there, you don't have to worry about habitat failure.

I thought we were looking for underused ideas, not bad ones...? :P

Anyways, yeah. Laser fighters, unless you can have semi-reasonable plasma ones.

The point that was being raised was that the fringe conditions for 0.00 rating are equivalent to the most extreme environments on Earth; they're technically habitable without infrastructure, but are anything but comfortable.

If you can fit a carronade onto a fighter, by all means, but I don't think you'll be able to, hence the reduced size lasers.

You have to remember than those are average stats for planet. A planet with a 1°C average will have 3/4 of its surface covered by kilometer-deep ice sheets (if it has enough water), and most of the population living in a thin band around the equator. Climate is okay, you're just stuck in a pretty small area.

Bremen, have you tried using the escort mechanics to manage the gunboats?

Ideally I would like to return and terraform Mars up to something nicer, but of course once Hope is in better shape there's still Alpha Centauri, and soon Ross and Epsilon Eridani. Who knows if the UHF will ever get ahead on terraforming. It might be better to have some sort of standards; IE first priority is terraforming Planets with >5m pop to M class, second is to get planets with >25m pop to Earth standard, third is to work on new candidate worlds, etc etc.

Maybe one of the big civil projects should be a worldship class terraformer. If we dedicated the entire economy of the UHF for a decade we could build one that could terraform a class K to Earth standard in just a little over a year!

I haven't tried escorts, no. The main bit of micromanaging is assigning them all to the right carriers, and then after a battle going through each carrier and assigning replacements for losses, etc. I had some luck with using the naval organization chart for this but it was also took a lot of time to get organized.

Yes, in an exceedingly roundabout way you can make a group, assign some gunboats to it, copy it to the clipboard, select a carrier, and assign all the ships in the current clipboard as parasites of that carrier.

I was as surprised as you, having never touched it before. It took me like 30 minutes just to figure out how to assign Hannah Avram as commander of the fleet.

If there's anybody available with psychological problems (in pretty much any rank/role), they would love to be Raymond Smuckles.

Great LP... helping me get into Aurora.

I guess Megalomania and Sociopathy can be an advantage in government.

Sorry its a bit late, but welcome to Raymond Smuckles, President of the UHF.
