On occasion i'm in the AnonOps IRC, to see what they're planning and to chat them up. no real planning goes on in that irc, instead ideas are proposed there, and if an anon with the power to act likes the idea makes a new secret irc and invites some key players to it, then thats where they do the planning / decision making.  pretty nifty system, rule by discussion / consensus.   If you're going to check out there irc ALWAYS do it from behind a VPN, to protect yourself both from bad anon members and from fbi, dont use a name associated with anything else you do, don't give out any sort of info that would let them dox you.

There is also a personal army section of the irc network.  Bored anon members hang out in there,  if you've built up rapport or prestige with anon or have become a "key player" you have access to the personal army; also known as the troll army, and can send them to do your bidding.  If you try to request they do something and no one knows who you are, you'll just get laughed at.
and by know who you are, I mean know your irc name, not your dox.

Doxxing in case you don't know, is the act of finding out who a anon member is.
dox stands for documents, onced doxed you're not part of anon anymore and are vulnerable to police / fbi / anyone who didn't like what you did while you were anon.

example of a dox

edited to include dox example and personal army info.

Since I knew we already had a thread laying around: Breaking Anonymous News, and this time it's not DDoS'ing.

Anti-Sec hackers (as in the group, not the alignment) apparently gained access to an FBI agent's email, and used a message there to listen in on a hacker-tracking call between the FBI and Scotland Yard, publishing a recording online.  I haven't listened to the call itself yet (and yes, I linked to FoxNews, d/w it); interestingly enough, they edited out some names but not others.

Personally, I think they blew a big opportunity by jumping straight to publishing as soon as they had one phonecall.  Probably could have waited until they had something significant to talk about.

cool cool,
but by the look of it they had the number and password to listen in on one conference call, so they couldn't have waited until they had more because that was all they could get.

a message purportedly sent by an FBI agent to international law enforcement agencies. It invites his foreign counterparts to join the call to "discuss the on-going investigations related to Anonymous ... and other associated splinter groups." The email contained a phone number and password for accessing the call.

*DOH*. Probably got the guy's email address from the STRATFOR leak last month. I'd be more curious to know how they managed to get into his email. We just put a hundred-plus users through sheer hell of rejiggering all their account info for that very same reason. A lot of us thought DOJ was kinda overreacting at the time. Now.....okay, good call, Justice.

Indeed. Also; My history teacher brought up a good point. The British Empire called the Americans terrorists :>

Jesus was a terrorist to the Romans, it's a very common misconception that all terrorism is evil in all cases in all times.

We hate terrorism with such bile because we have absolutely no need of it, we are the worlds greatest powers and we can do what we want by military force if we so desire. We do not need to resort to clandestine tactics.
The last time my country(The UK) was fighting of an occupation was in 1066, more than 900 years ago.

If we had bombs then, we sure as hell would have used them.
If the Nazi's had occupied, we sure as hell would have a terrorist resistence cell.

Some countrys do.

Don't get me wrong, I don't support terrorism. But I'm not so naive I don't see that terrorism is simply another method of war usually employed by a vastly outnumbered foe in an occupied country.
I think it's extremely disingenuous for us to take the moral high ground because we have smart missiles.

We don't use smart missiles because we are more morally superior to terrorists, we use them because we can better occupy and continue a war by not giving the enemy or the civilians of the nation free propaganda and real true reasons to pick up a gun and fight us.

*When it comes down to it, we use the full might of our industry to destroy the enemy civilians and the enemys will to fight.
Read WW2, Hiroshima, the Firebombings of Japan, Dresden etc etc.

As for Anon, always chuckle when I see their latest antics. I don't think they have an agenda to ruin, as some others have stated. I think they just like to raise chaos generally, and they do, and it's amusing to behold.
Long may it continue.1

Erm... To be technical here, what does terrorism imply when you think of it? Remember orange and grey morality at all times. 'Evil' is subjective, and just stamping black or white on something always leads to over generalisation.

Exactly the point. Being victims of recent terrorism we consider it the greatest evil in our time. As someone else stated, George Washington was once considered a terrorist.

I just listened to the whole conference call. The saddest part about the whole thing is that everything the Scotland Yard guys said about Sheffield is true. Not to put to fine a point on it, but you haven't really experienced England until you've seen a morbidly obese girl in a lycra microdress vomit into her handbag and then hit some in the face with it.

Edit: Is it me do the authorities seem to think Steam is a "gaming website" with 32000 members?

or maybe Valve goes out of business because they invested too heavily in something which then fails - like, say, human civilization.

I think for the most part, inter country cyber war fair is directed at significantly more secure targets.
All the juicy stuff that North Korea would like aren't the kind of things that anon hack into.

Anon gives me crazy ideas about a future scifi world where groups of hackers like Anon roam the earth causing havok. Remeniscent of the 80's? film Hackers.

If nothing else, that is awesome.

I think the thing about hackers is, these aren't the people stealing credit card info or creating viruses, these are the people who strike back at Governments or institutions that try to infringe on their 'way of life'. Whether that be right or not I think most hackers are essentially Anarchists first, not criminals primarily.
