Claiming and reclaiming
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:51:44 am »

Ugh, thunderbird. knowwhatImean???

Well after an epic battle using soviet tactics I defeated a thunderbird who was destroying me but was forced to reclaim.
Do I have to manually claim ALL my items back? or can I mass designate? I went into stocks to do it a bit but It don't show much of the actual on map items.

Also will I still have to bury the dead? or am I free from that task

You can mass designate, but you'll need a bookkeeper with highest accuracy first, and it takes them a month or two to do the books to the point that you can see every item in your stock screen.

And, er, I'd bury the dead if I were you, but it sort of depends on the biome.  Evil biome = lots and lots of ghosts.

You can designate them by area... d-b-c for reclaim, then designate the area like you would for mining. Doesn't work across z-levels.

Yes, you need to bury them or memorialize them. You may be able to get away with just slapping down a slab every time a ghost rises, but slabs are a little bit buggy during reclaim--sometimes a name doesn't show up.

Nothing says you can't just stick the coffins in a random 8x5 side chamber, you know. After all, they're dead dwarves; they don't care. Dead dwarves can't tantrum-spiral.

BTW, if it matters to your aesthetic sense, you can deconstruct coffins and move the skeleton to a new location by re-burying it. Temporary burials during times of war or civil disorder are common in my forts.

Like the above said, you can just pile a bunch of coffins in some crap room.. they don't have to be elaborate.  Use mass reclaim (d-b-c) on the biggest open floors of your fort and the surface to get most of your items back.  Keep in mind that your dwarves are going to be doing a TON of hauling for a while though, especially while you only have 7.

And until you get your coffins built, it might be a good idea to collect the bodies: use the corpse stockpile, P-Y, and you can keep them from rotting all over the place

Well a few things:

@Calli + Nuk: meh, they're covered in snow so that'll be their tombs for a while.

@Kelen: I ALWAYS collect my bodies, ALWAYS!!!

Tip, set stockpiles up in priority so your Dwarves don't spend all day hauling anvils and ending up starving themselves to death.

"In priority"? What do you mean by that? Is there an order in which dwarves prefer to fill stockpiles? I've observed that they seem to, but I can't really figure out whether there's a pattern.

By priority I mean what your fort needs the most at the time and place. For example, gathering the food, booze and maybe weapons are generally the first stockpiles I set. When they're done, and I have sustainable industry set back up, I set the rest of the stockpiles.
