Hey did you hear? bob died... what are you doing with that axe?
« on: January 24, 2012, 11:02:36 pm »

So i had a 125 dwarf fortress tantrum spiral into oblivion.

Funny thing is i dont know why

I had:
artificial waterfalls
8 kinds of booze in constant production
a decent military
rock gardens
individual beds

what happened before this occurred was that my fisherdwarf got cut up by an ambush. My military made short work of it but then i start seeing "Urist has gone beserk!"... really?

for one dwarfs death? my captain of the guard made short work of the miscreants with his Arifact platinum warhammer

after a shortwhile every dwarf went emo and died of dehydration

Unfortunately your dwarves were likely too social and friendly with one another. One death of a popular dwarf in a fort can send anyone precarious over the edge, which depending on what they do can cause others to spark off causing an overall system collapse. Tantrum spiral (a lovely example on that page IMO) is a very apt way to describe these types of situations thus.

Was there any hardcore masterwork-smashing going on?

so in other words i was too lenient on them to let them party and socialize?

alright, next fort is going to emphasize back breaking labor, ill make 50 picks and put them to work in the slave mines before they can socialize.

Any dwarf on break will have his bedroom filled with magma

I play since 1 year, never had a tantrum spiral. I also never have more than 1-2 dwarve idle, and those are broker and or chief medical dwarf. I would say: Friends and socializing in this game are bad.

I've recovered from tantrum spirals. it's difficult to do.
My current fort, Limulunnos, very nearly went into one when two fisherdwarves died (both had ten friends each, and both had spouses.)

If I remember correctly, the bigger your meeting areas are the less likely they'll make friends. Maybe you should try that

I did once, it was great.  I don't remember exactly what triggered it, but I think it started with me mining out someones masterwork wall engraving to build some more bedrooms.

Dinning room with goblins dropping from the ceiling every couple days or so.  It'll numb them to the point where they won't feel much of anything anymore.  If that doesn't work, try kittens or puppies.
