Archery ranges
« on: January 24, 2012, 09:41:06 pm »

The wiki mentions channeling out space around an archery range to preserve bolts. I'm wondering does that mean just to the immediate sides of the archery range, or more?

Channel behind the range, and put a wall behind the channel.
Bolts that miss will hit the wall and fall down unbroken.

if you channel in front you'll break the "room" indicator and dwarfs stop training there

You don't need channels behind the targets, just next to them. As long as the bolts missing the targets hit walls with holes in the tiles infront of them, you can reuse them.

Instead of channels, I usually just have holes in the floor going to the ammo stockpile beneath. This saves alot of time when reclaiming the bolts.

Something like this:
Code: [Select]
-------
_X_X_X_
- is wall
_ is channel
X is archery target

Basically, just make sure that, if the bolts miss the target, they'll hit a wall and drop down a z-level.

Use a floor grate to allow a walkable path to the archery target and the Dorf.

That is...an excellent idea! Didn't realise that objects could land on a stockpile and become part of it, thought they had to be placed there. Will now be doing the same for corpses at the bottom of the execution shaft, though the way they spray apart means that might not save that much time! Thanks for this  :).
